Man surrenders after standoff at Chicago hospital

By CARYN ROUSSEAU, Associated Press Writer Caryn Rousseau, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 1 min ago

CHICAGO – The standoff at a Chicago hospital has ended peacefully after the gunman who barricaded himself in an exam room surrendered to police.

Deputy police Chief Wayne Gulliford says the suspect was taken into custody after about seven hours of negotiations. Gulliford says no charges have been filed and the investigation continues.

Police say the man walked into the lobby of the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center early Wednesday and fired one round before holing up in the emergency room. Nobody was hurt and the rest of the hospital remained open.

Gulliford isn't releasing the man's name and refused to comment on reports that he is a suspect in a homicide. In that case, police are investigating the deaths of a couple in their 70s who were found shot to death in their Chicago home.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CHICAGO (AP) — Officers were negotiating with a man who barricaded himself in a hospital examination room after firing a shot in the emergency room early Wednesday, police said. No one was injured.

SWAT officers were called after the man walked into the lobby of the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center around 1:35 a.m. and fired one round, news affairs officer Hector Alfaro said. The man then holed up in an exam room.

While the emergency room was evacuated, the rest of the hospital, a 205-bed facility on the city's west side, remained open.

Officers were talking to the man in hopes of resolving the situation peacefully, Deputy Police Chief Wayne Gulliford said. The man's identification hasn't been confirmed and officials don't know if he's a veteran, Gulliford said.

He refused to comment on reports that the man is a suspect in a homicide. In that case, police are investigating the deaths of a couple in their 70s, who were found shot to death in their Chicago home.
