(May 13) - A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a mini-roller coaster after he slipped away from his parents and ran onto the tracks, British media reported Wednesday.
Erjon Hyseni was attending a fair on Ducketts Common in North London when the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said Erjon had been playing in an inflatable bouncy castle but ran off and climbed onto the tracks of the "Go-Gator" kiddie roller coaster.
"I understand the young boy had just finished playing on an inflatable ride and then ran over onto the tracks of the Go-Gator, a juvenile ride," Keith Miller, general secretary of the Showman's Guild, told Sky News Online.
"There would have been a barrier surrounding the roller coaster but he must have found a way around it," Miller said.
The operator of the Go-Gator ride applied the brakes but could not stop the carriages in time, officials said.
"I think everyone heard the terrified screams of the mother of the little boy. She was in a very bad state. She was crying and screaming," Dorothy Murphy, 88, who lives near the fairground, told the Daily Mail.
Erjon was taken by ambulance to The Royal London Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The fair was closed after the accident.
