Gunmen abduct 3-year-old from Calif. home

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - A 3-year-old boy was kidnapped by two gunmen who broke into his family's home, tied up his mother and her five children, robbed the house and left with the child, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert late Sunday for 3-year-old Briant Rodriguez, about nine hours after he was taken from his San Bernardino home. *snip*

Investigators explore lead on abducted Calif. boy

By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer Gillian Flaccus, Associated Press Writer – 32 mins ago

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Authorities said Wednesday they were pursuing an unspecified lead in the abduction of a 3-year-old boy from his home but wouldn't say whether any arrests were imminent three days after the boy's mother reported that he was snatched by two armed men.

Sheriff's investigators said they have received numerous tips since Maria Rosalina Millan called police on Sunday to say the men had burst into the family's home, tied up Millan and five of her children and stole money and other property.

About 20 minutes later, the men left with Briant Rodriguez, the youngest child, after ordering Millan and the other children not to call police, officials said.

Investigators "have developed some information that they are following up on and will determine if it is significant to the case," sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers said in a statement. Beavers and other officials would not elaborate.

Milan, sitting on her front porch with two plainclothes detectives, declined to comment on Wednesday. At a news conference Tuesday, she pleaded for her son's safe return.

No motive had been established and federal and local investigators were looking at several theories, including that the Spanish-speaking kidnappers were from Mexico and may have had ties to organized crime there. No ransom has been demanded.

Border authorities were put on alert and FBI agents were helping in the investigation.

The family lives in a modest, single-story home in a lower-income area abutting the city of San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

One of the children was able to loosen himself from his ties and freed the rest of the family, authorities said. Briant is the youngest of Millan's seven children. Her 16-year-old son was not home and an adult child does not live there.

The boy's father was at work at the time and the initial investigation pointed to the kidnappers being strangers to the family, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert but had no witness descriptions of the abductors' vehicle that could be posted on highway information signs to help locate the suspects.

Ok Folks..we would have to be blind not to see what is truly going on here.

No matter what case it is, every case is a puzzle, and along the way, the pieces fit together..sometimes a few ARE missing, but common sense dictates.

MOO ~

Briant is the only child of the father in the home. The older children are not children at all, and from another father. This connects this father and this mother to the kidnapping.

If one of the older family members were involved, they would have taken that one to kill...or whatever they have in mind. Does the father owe money? Some kind of mexican mafia type situation? The child is either a bargaining chip, or a 'lesson learned'....So far though, no ransom demand, so..........

They took the cellphone. Not only was this the only form of communication to call LE, but that phone was used instead of a landline...it has all the phone numbers of everyone they know. Either they just took it so they could not call LE immediately (my 1st option) or was there something on that phone that could help them? Doubtful. OK, SO HOW DID THEY KNOW, IF SO, THAT IT WAS THE ONLY PHONE THEY HAD? DID THE KIDNAPPERS KNOW?

This was not a robbery, this child was taken on purpose...and it leads back to the father or someone they did wrong ~ a very questionable and bad Someone.

Briant we are praying for you.

Or a neighbor and they got the wrong family. As a Californian, I am getting more concerned about this sort of thing.

Reunited with mom, abducted boy headed back home
By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer Gillian Flaccus, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 51 mins ago

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A 3-year-old boy kidnapped nearly two weeks ago was in good spirits after he was found in Mexico and reunited with his mother, the sheriff said.

The boy, Briant Rodriguez, underwent physical and emotional evaluations at a local hospital Saturday after returning from the Mexican border town of Mexicali, where he was found wandering the streets. He was expected to return home after the checkup.

The reunion earlier in the day between Briant and his mother, Maria Rosalina Millan, ended an ordeal that began May 3 when two armed men who burst into his family's San Bernardino home and tied up his family, authorities said.

"I've been doing this for 30 years. I'm not saying it doesn't happen ... but the odds of finding him safe and alive — the odds of finding him alive — went down every day," San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops said. "Our detectives never gave up."

Mother and son were brought together Saturday in Calexico, Calif., a day after Mexican authorities told their U.S. counterparts they'd found a boy who could be Briant in neighboring Mexicali, sheriff's Lt. Rick Ells said.

Ells said a municipal police officer in Mexicali found the boy wandering the streets by himself late Thursday.

The officer initially thought the child was from the neighborhood and took him to several houses seeking his family before leaving him in child protective custody, Ells said.

Hoops did not know how long Briant had been left alone in Mexicali, but said he appeared unharmed and was in good spirits. His long curly locks had been shaved off.

Hoops said authorities believed they were closing in on at least two men suspected in the abduction when the boy was found.

"We identified some suspects," he said. "I can't specifically say if the suspects let him go or if he wandered away, but I have to think the suspects let him go."

Millan said two men burst into her modest, single-story home about 60 miles east of Los Angeles on May 3, tied up the family, stole money and other property then left with her youngest child.

Sounds like the municipal police officer in Mexicali should be the one who gets the reward. He could have just assumed the boy was out his front door or something, but he stopped and helped.

SoCal boy abducted to Mexico back home with family
By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer Gillian Flaccus, Associated Press Writer – 24 mins ago

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The 3-year-old boy abducted from his family by gunmen almost two weeks ago is back home Sunday, shorn of his long, curly hair, but apparently unharmed after being found wandering the streets of a Mexico border town.

Briant Rodriguez rejoined his family after being hospitalized overnight for a physical and emotional evaluation. Police have not questioned him about his ordeal, but plan to do so in coming days after the boy has time to settle into his normal routines at home.

"Physically, he's in good shape. He was obviously fatigued," Cindy Beavers, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, told The Associated Press.

"I'm sure there is some trauma from being apart from his family for two weeks," Beavers added, calling his safe return "an amazing outcome."

Authorities said Briant was kidnapped May 3 by two gunmen who burst into his family's modest home and tied up his mother and four of his siblings.

A local police officer found him wandering the streets of the border town of Mexicali late Thursday. His long, curly hair had been shaved but authorities said he looked fine otherwise.

"At some point when he's interviewed, he may or may not tell detectives when that happened and possibly who did it," Beavers said. She added that the boy will meet with detectives trained to question youngsters.

The Mexicali officer initially thought Briant was from the neighborhood and took him to several houses seeking his family before leaving him in child protective custody. Mexican authorities then contacted U.S. officials.

FBI agents traveled to Mexicali to handle immigration paperwork for the boy, who holds dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship. The agents then brought him across the border, where he was reunited with his mother, Maria Rosalina Millan, in Calexico on Saturday.

Gerardo Franco, a spokesman for the Baja California state prosecutor's office, said he understood Millan was not reunited with her son in Mexicali because she is an illegal immigrant in the U.S. and was afraid to cross the border.

Sheriff Rod Hoops declined to discuss Millan's immigration status, but he stressed that Briant is an American citizen.

"He was born in a hospital in San Bernardino and he has every right to be here," Hoops said. "That's why we worked so hard to get him back.

"I've been doing this for 30 years. I'm not saying it doesn't happen ... but the odds of finding him safe and alive — the odds of finding him alive — went down every day," the sheriff added.

He said authorities believed they were closing in on at least two men suspected in the abduction when the boy was found.

"We identified some suspects," he said. "I can't specifically say if the suspects let him go or if he wandered away, but I have to think the suspects let him go."

Federal and local investigators have said they were looking at several theories, including one that the Spanish-speaking kidnappers were from Mexico and may have had ties to organized crime there.

The kidnappers never demanded a ransom, and authorities said it didn't appear they knew the family.

Briant's father was at work and two of his oldest siblings were not home when the men burst into the house about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Briant's mother said the men tied her and her four other children up and robbed the family of money and property.

"They grabbed my kid, told me 'I'm going to take the kid to Mexico and I'm going to kill him,'" Millan told reporters in Spanish shortly after Briant was taken. When she pleaded with them not to take him, she said, they threatened to shoot her.
