Nation's First Pet-Only Airline Set For Takeoff

PetAirways: 'Pawsengers' Only In The Main Cabin
POSTED: Thursday, April 16, 2009
UPDATED: 1:06 pm EDT April 16, 2009

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Pet Airways, the first pet-only airline specifically designed for the safe and comfortable transportation of pets, announced Thursday that the first pet flights are scheduled for July 14.

On Pet Airways, all pets travel in the main cabin, not in the cargo hold.

Serving five cities to start - New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles - Pet Airways plans to expand nationwide with easily accessible pet check-in lounges to serve its "pawsengers" in major metropolitan areas.

A proprietary web-enabled reservation system will allow customers to book pet travel on the web. Owners will also be able to track their pet’s travel progress online.

“Currently, most pets traveling by air are transported in the cargo hold and are handled as baggage. The experience is frightening to the pets, and can cause severe emotional and physical harm, even death. This is not what most pet owners want to subject their pets to, but they have had no other choice, until now," said Dan Wiesel, president/CEO of Pet Airways.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association, approximately 76 million cats and dogs travel with their owners each year.

The Pet Airways goal is to make the pet travel experience more comfortable and enjoyable for both pawsengers and their human families.

Fido, Fluffy fly on Pet Airways

Posted at 12:01 am by Michelle Dunlop

Hate to put your pet in the cargo while you fly up in coach?

Beginning this summer, your dog or cat can fly in class, thanks to Pet Airways. Just one drawback: No human passengers are allowed on this pets-only airline.

Purr-fect.

The airline has partnered with fellow animal lovers like Best Friends Animal Society and Pets Best Insurance.

The carrier is getting started with a Beechcraft 1900 and doesn’t yet offer service to Seattle.

Ruh-roh.

Pet-only airline prepares to take flight

The first U.S. pet-only airline will begin full service in July, the company said Thursday.

To start, Pet Airways will serve five cities: New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles
, WFOR-TV of Doral, Fla., reported Thursday.

The station noted that pet passengers will travel in the main cabin, not in the cargo hold, as happens with some traditional airlines.

Many airlines have announced recently they will no longer accept pets on board their planes, the station said.

The Delray Beach, Fla. airline said it will be ready to fly July 14.

The station said from the time pets are dropped off at the carrier's pet lounge, animals will be under the care of trained attendants. Plane cabins will be climate-controlled and have the level of fresh air circulation that pets require.
