Talking Toddler Falls 40 Feet, Men Catch Her

LAWRENCE, Mass. (March 30) -- Two Massachusetts men are being hailed as heroes by police for catching a toddler who fell 40 feet from a home's third-story window.

Robert Lemire told the Eagle-Tribune newspaper he was talking on his cell phone Sunday evening outside a pizza shop in Lawrence, about 25 miles north of Boston, when he saw the toddler hanging from a window across the street.

The 45-year-old father of two bolted across a busy street, narrowly avoiding being hit by a car. After getting across, he met 23-year-old Alex Day, who had been inside the building at a Bible study meeting. Lemire pointed out the dangling child, and the two men ran to stand underneath her. Suddenly, she dropped

"As soon as I told him what was happening, we both looked up and there she came," Lemire told the Eagle-Tribune.

"I've only seen something like that on TV," he said.

Together, Lemire and Day caught 18-month-old Caliah Clark before she hit the ground.

Lawrence Police Chief John Romero credited the men's fast action with saving the child's life.

"These guys are heroes, no question about it," he told the Eagle-Tribune.

Caliah was taken to a hospital for evaluation but she suffered no serious injuries, police said. Her father had been another room caring for a newborn when Caliah and another young sibling began playing near the window.

Day called the event "absolutely incredible."

"She was so small, she would have really been hurt," he said. "It was pretty amazing when I look back on the whole thing."
