Rita Brum
Rita Brum, 24, a physical education teacher at Mt. Pleasant High School in East San Jose, California was
arrested last week and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday on charges arising from allegations that she had an illicit sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student.
Reportedly Brum was arrested on February 26 and was subsequently released on $15,000 bail. Brum’s attorney, San Jose-based Edward N. Ajlouny, said Brum plans to take “full responsibility” for the relationship. Ajlouny hopes to get the “best plea deal possible” for his client.
Reportedly Brum and the alleged victim met early in the school year and their relationship grew as they spent time together on and off campus. It is alleged that in early December that they began kissing and eventually began a sexual relationship.
Brum came to the attention of the girl’s mother when the woman found a love letter from Brum to her daughter, became angry and confronted her daughter, who then revealed her relationship with Brum. The girl’s mother reportedly confronted Brum at an arena and pulled Brum’s hair during an altercation. When officers at the arena responded to the incident they were told about the illicit relationship.
A spokesperson for the school system has stated that Brum was placed on administrative leave following her arrest.
