James Dyer
A former Brazosport ISD history teacher will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after he pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.
James Dyer, 31, pleaded guilty Tuesday and will have to serve 10 years deferred adjudication, court documents state. Dyer also will pay a $1,000 fine, serve 160 hours of community service and cannot be employed where he would be in the presence of a child younger than 17, the documents state.
If convicted by a jury, Dyer could have faced up to 10 years in prison. Since his arrest, Dyer has moved to Nevada.
Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne said the deal ensures Dyer always will be registered as a sex offender no matter where he lives.
“It follows you around for the rest of your life,” Yenne said. “It also ensures he won’t be able to be in a teaching capacity.”
Dyer’s attorney could not be contacted for comment Wednesday.
Brazosport ISD placed him on administrative leave in February after the search warrant was executed. While the district was in the process of terminating his employment, Dyer resigned, said Stuart Dornburg, the district’s executive director of human resources.
