James Mayes
James Mayes, a former teacher at North Forest’s Children’s First Academy in the Houston, Texas area has been found guilty of molesting a former student during a school trip to Dallas in 2003 when the girl was 12-years-old.
It was alleged that Mayes also had sex with her at her home a year later.
During his trial Mayes denied the accusations and says he had never been to the alleged victim’s house. Mayes says he felt police were too quick to arrest him, and says he never was given a chance to tell his side of the story.
The Mayes trial turned into a bit of a circus when one juror came forward about allegations that she felt pressured into a guilty verdict. The juror said she wanted to change her guilty verdict just as jurors were getting together to deliberate punishment. The juror proceeded to yell at the judge, saying that she was harassed by the other jurors and bullied into voting guilty. The reluctant juror indicated that she would refuse to deliberate the punishment phase and was kicked off the jury by the judge.
The remaining 11 jurors returned with a punishment phase verdict of two years probation. The jurors were informed that the minimum was five years probation so they adjourned to deliberate again and returned with a five year probation sentence.*
