A guilt-ridden Scotland teacher who turned herself in to police after having sex with a pupil is facing a prison sentence. Alison Smith, 29, spent the night with the 15-year-old boy after he visited her home with friends. She told officers the teenager had instigated kissing between them, but no one had instigated the sex. ' That just kind of evolved,' she said.
Smith's name has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register after she pleaded guilty at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday to breaching her position of trust and having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old.
The special needs teacher, who was suspended and then left her job after the incident, is now understood to face a General Teaching Council (GTC) investigation.
Her inappropriate conduct could lead to her being banned from the profession for life.
Smith, who was addressed as 'Ali' by students at the school in Aberdeenshire, slept with the boy on June 15 this year after he went to her flat with two friends.
Fiscal depute Elaine Lynch told the court how the four listened to music and watched films for a while.
Smith and the boy then went to her bedroom, leaving the other two, who were boyfriend and girlfriend, in the living room. The pair talked for a while before the boy took off his T- shirt and changed into pyjama bottoms.
Miss Lynch said: 'Smith and the boy began to kiss each other and he undressed Smith.
'Following this, they had sexual intercourse.'
The pair fell asleep and the boy stayed the night. When they awoke, they didn't discuss what had happened the night before. Nothing more was said about it until a fortnight later, when Smith confided in friends.
She then voluntarily attended a police station close to the school and admitted having sex with the boy.
Her solicitor, John McLeod, pointed out that she was instrumental in taking the case to court. He added that she had now left her job.
It is believed the GTC will hold an investigation into the incident and it is likely that Smith will be struck off the register and banned from working with children ever again.
A council spokesman said: 'It would be inappropriate to comment while court proceedings are still active.'
The case first came to light at the end of the summer term, when the school's headmaster announced a teacher had been suspended.
It is understood that at an end-of-term meeting he told staff that a complaint had been made against a learning support teacher.
Smith never returned to the school. The incident comes a year after the school was criticised by inspectors for having 'poor leadership'.
Local councillor Neil Cooney, a former teacher, said: 'I've got no sympathy. This is one of those things that should never, ever happen. There is a line that has to be drawn.
'Teachers can be young and be very close in age group to the kids, but they must still see them as children.
