Island businesswoman remains missing

HOLMES BEACH — Thomas Buehler is terrified that something has happened to his wife and business partner since she went missing four days ago.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office detectives continue to search for Sabine Musil-Buehler, 49, co-owner of Haley's Motel on Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach.

Buehler said he is still married to Musil-Buehler, but they are separated. He said they are still business partners and friends. Buehler reported her missing Thursday. Other witnesses say they last saw her Wednesday night in the area of 14th Street West and 26th Avenue West.

“We are really worried, really afraid for her life,” said Buehler. “She has been gone for four days, and it is totally out of the ordinary.”

Sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said deputies found Musil-Buehler’s car early Thursday morning near 12th Street Court West and 26th Avenue West.

Bristow said there is no evidence of foul play in her disappearance, but there is concern.

“We have no reason to believe right now there is any foul play, but we really need to find her to make sure she is OK,” he said.

Anyone with information regarding her disappearance can call the sheriff’s office at (941) 747-3011, or Crimestoppers at (866) 634-TIPS.

Friends of missing islander fear worst

HOLMES BEACH — Those who know and love respected Holmes Beach motel owner Sabine Musil-Buehler are scared for her life and puzzled at her disappearance that they say is completely out of character.

For seven years, Musil-Buehler, 59, has owned Haley’s Motel, on Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach, with her husband Tom Buehler. The couple recently separated but have remained business partners and friends.

“We are really worried, really afraid for her life,” Tom Buehler said. “She has been gone for four days, and it is totally out of the ordinary.”

The feeling of fear is also rising among her friends.

“There is something wrong, I know it,” said best friend Debbie Hall. “She just wouldn’t take off like this.”

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office officials continue to search for the native of Germany and say they have found no evidence of foul play.

“Right now we don’t have much to go on. We really need to find her,” said sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow.

Buehler reported his wife missing Thursday morning, saying he had last seen her Tuesday.

It didn’t take long for detectives to catch a break, but it is one that has turned out to be frustrating.

The same morning Buehler reported her missing, deputies pulled over a man driving Musil-Buehler’s car. Robert Corona, 38, stopped the Pontiac Sunfire at 12th Street Court West and 26th Avenue West. He fled on foot but was quickly arrested after a sheriff’s K-9 dog found him hiding nearby.

Detectives asked Corona about Musil-Buehler. He said he had been “partying” with her, according to Bristow.

But his story changed Friday as detectives continued the search for Musil-Buehler. Corona told detectives he had never met Musil-Buehler and had taken her car, which he said had been parked outside a 14th Street West bar.

“We don’t know why he lied. We are guessing he wanted to get out of the grand theft,” Bristow said.

Corona was being held in the Manatee County jail Friday on charges of resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

But the mystery remains as to how Musil-Buehler’s car got to 14th Street West. Detectives have processed the car in search of any evidence that could lead to her whereabouts, Bristow said.

Detectives have also questioned Musil-Buehler’s boyfriend, William J. Cumber. Cumber, 39, who detectives say is on parole for a 2005 arson conviction, told investigators he had not seen his girlfriend for two days.

He could not be reached for comment.

Cumber was released in September after three years in prison.

Court records say he pleaded guilty to setting fire to a woman’s home, telling detectives “he did not have the intent to burn down the house, but wanted to leave a message since he felt scorned.”

Corona’s suggestion that Musil-Buehler had been “partying” especially bothered those who know her.

Family and friends fear for missing hotel owner

MANATEE COUNTY - Authorities say there is no evidence of foul play in the disappearance of a Holmes Beach motel owner, but her friends and family fear otherwise.

Sabine Musil-Buehler, co-owner of Haley's Motel on Holmes Beach, was last seen Wednesday night in the area of 14th Street West and 26th Avenue in Bradenton, according to Manatee sheriff's reports.

Her husband, Tom Buehler, believes his wife is in grave danger. He said he does not know of anyone who would intentionally harm her, but he worries she got caught up in a bad situation.

Boyfriend puzzled by missing woman

HOLMES BEACH — The boyfriend of a missing woman said he has not seen her since they had an argument Tuesday night.

Bill J. Cumber, 39, said outside his Holmes Beach residence Saturday afternoon he had been dating 49-year-old Sabine Musil-Buehler for about a year.

It’s now been five days since her loved ones last saw the island business woman.

Cumber is on parole for a 2005 arson conviction. He burned a former girlfriend’s house down because “he felt scorned,” he told detectives.

He was released from prison in September.

Cumber said he has no idea what happened to Musil-Buehler.

“I have a record and it all reflects back on me,” he said. “That’s my past. I’ve done my time.”

The couple had lived together for about five weeks. Their relationship was on the rocks but both had agreed to go for couple’s counseling, he said.

The couple met in 2005 when Cumber began working at her business.

He was arrested shortly after and began writing Musil-Buehler letters from prison.

Cumber said Saturday he last saw her at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, when they argued over him smoking cigarettes.

Cumber said he has not heard from her since.

“I miss her and want her back. She was all I had going for me,” he said. “I miss her. Everybody misses her.”

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office investigators have not found any evidence of foul play. No suspects have been named. Detectives are in the process of interviewing former employees at the motel as well as other acquaintances.

Local residents and loved ones have been shocked at her disappearance.

Musil-Buehler was first reported missing by her husband — from whom she was separated — business partner and friend, Tom Buehler.

Buehler and Musil-Buehler have been married for 14 years. They have been separated for six years even though they continued living together recently, he said. They own Haley’s Motel on Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach.

He fears the worst.

“I know she’s dead. No one would have her car and keys,” he said.

“I knew something bad had happened to her.”

Buehler reported his wife missing Thursday morning after he received a 3:30 a.m. call from authorities, when deputies made a traffic stop on her car — a white 2000 Pontiac Sunfire — saying three men were in the car.

Buehler said he last saw her Tuesday afternoon at home.

“She was a little too trusting,” Buehler said.

“She is very kind and would do anything for anybody. … She was my wife. She was my best friend.”

Deputies stopped Robert Corona, 38, of Bradenton, driving her car. Corona told deputies he had been partying with Musil-Buehler all night and he had lost track of her.

Corona has prior felony convictions of aggravated assault, robbery and burglary. On Saturday, Corona remained in jail on charges of resisting an officer without violence and driving with a suspended license. He has a bond of $1,250.

Corona later changed his story, telling deputies he stole the parked vehicle at a 14th Street West bar. It’s unclear how her car arrived at the bar.

A bartender at the Gator Lounge on Saturday said Musil-Buehler never came in the bar. Her vehicle was seen parked in the lot at closing time.

Sheriff: Blood found in missing woman’s car

. . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . Sabine Musil-Buehler

HOLMES BEACH — Authorities found blood in the car of Anna Maria Island motel owner Sabine Musil-Buehler, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

Pieces of seats and carpeting also appear to have been removed from the car, forensic tests over the weekend revealed.

The discovery has detectives treating Musil-Buehler’s disappearance as a possible homicide, sheriff’s reports released today said.

At about 3 a.m. Thursday, deputies pulled over a man driving Musil-Buehler’s Pontiac Sunfire in the 1200 block of 26th Avenue West for a traffic violation.

Deputies say Robert Corona, 38, ran from the car after the traffic stop. A sheriff’s K-9 dog quickly tracked Corona, and deputies arrested him on charges of resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

Sheriff’s reports say when deputies found the car they called the registered owner, Musil-Buehler’s husband Thomas Buehler. Buehler said he had not seen his wife — from whom he is separated — in two days.

When deputies asked Corona how he got Musil-Buehler’s car, he told investigators he had been “partying” with her and was given her car by an “acquaintance to go out and buy narcotics,” sheriff’s reports said.

Corona later changed his story, saying he never met Musil-Buehler and took her car after finding it unlocked with the keys in it in the parking lot of Gator Lounge in the 1800 block of 14th Street West. He has since been charged with grand theft auto.

Sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said detectives found a small amount of blood that could not initially be seen when the car was found.

“We found it during the processing of the vehicle,” he said.

Bristow said the blood will be tested to see if it is that of Musil-Buehler. As testing continues on the car and the blood, concern was deepening.

“Every day that goes by it appears worse and worse,” Bristow said. “We really need to find her. She could still be alive.”

As for possible suspects, detectives are not ruling anyone out.

“It is wide open right now,” Bristow said.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Musil-Buehler can call the sheriff’s office at 747-3011, or Crimestoppers at (866) 634-TIPS.

Sheriff says there’s little hope in missing woman case

MANATEE — Hope is dwindling that Anna Maria Island motel owner Sabine Musil-Buehler will be found alive, according to Manatee Sheriff Brad Steube.

Steube said red flags went up when deputies Nov. 6 arrested a man driving her stolen car, and her husband reported her missing.

“It didn’t look right to us from the beginning,” Steube said. “And too many days have gone by without anyone hearing from her. This a woman who has a whole lot of friends who have not heard from her.”

Concern for missing woman is global

HOLMES BEACH — Hope that Anna Maria Island motel owner Sabine Musil-Buehler is still alive is diminishing among law enforcement and her loved ones, both on the island and overseas.

In Musil-Buehler’s small hometown of Montabaur, Germany, her brothers, Michael and Stefan, and her 90-year-old father are waiting for any news on her disappearance. She was last seen Nov. 4, and blood has been found in her stolen car, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report.

Marion Heil, Musil-Buehler’s best friend for decades, flew to Anna Maria from Germany on Saturday in hopes that her friend will be found and to report back to Musil-Buehler’s family members on any developments.

“I really think she is dead. She would not be out of touch for this long,” Heil said. “We have talked every week, sometimes every day, for 30 years.”

Search still on for missing woman

HOLMES BEACH — Authorities continue to search for missing Anna Maria Island motel co-owner Sabine Musil-Buehler, who has not been seen since Nov. 4.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office detectives are treating her case as a possible homicide after pulling over a man driving her car on Nov. 6. Forensics tests on the car revealed blood, which is being tested to see if it is that of Musil-Buehler.

Deputies arrested the man found driving her car, Robert Corona, 38, who ran from the car after a traffic stop. Corona said initially he knew Musil-Buehler, but later changed his story, saying he never met her and stole her car outside the Gators Lounge bar on 14th Street West.

Detectives have charged Corona with grand theft auto. They interviewed him again Wednesday about Musil-Buehler’s disappearance.

“He is not saying much,” sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said.

Investigators have also interviewed Musil-Buehler’s husband, Thomas Buehler, who reported her missing after deputies found her car. The couple is separated.

Detectives also have also questioned her boyfriend, William Cumber, who said he has not seen her since Nov. 4.

Missing woman's motel engulfed in flames

HOLMES BEACH — Officials are investigating what caused a blaze Sunday night at a duplex at Haley’s Motel — the motel owned by Sabine Musil-Buehler, who has been missing since Nov. 4.

Excerpt: The fire marshal is investigating how and where the fire started and whether it was intentional, said Losek as he stood inside yellow crime scene tape that surrounded the motel in the 8100 block of Gulf Drive on Anna Maria Island.

“All we know is when we got here the fire was coming through the roof,” Losek said.

Manatee County Sheriff’s Office detectives have said they are investigating Musil-Buehler’s disappearance as a possible homicide.

Dave Bristow, sheriff’s spokesman, said it was too early to say whether the fire was a coincidence or not.

“We will check to see if there’s a connection between the fire and the missing woman,” Bristow said.

Police chief: Motel fire is ‘suspicious’

HOLMES BEACH — A fire that destroyed a Holmes Beach duplex Sunday evening is “suspicious” because the co-owner has been missing for almost two weeks, according to Holmes Beach Police Chief Jay Romine.

Romine said investigators have not uncovered evidence that the blaze at Haley’s Motel on Gulf Drive was intentionally set. But they also have not concluded there wasn’t a link to the apparent disappearance of Sabine Musil-Buehler, who co-owns the hotel with her estranged husband Thomas, Romine said.

Boyfriend denies involvement in case

HOLMES BEACH — A few blocks down the road from a fire investigation at the motel co-owned by his missing girlfriend, William Cumber sat alone in his apartment Monday waiting for a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office detective.

Cumber, 39, says law enforcement has repeatedly questioned him since Sabine Musil-Buehler went missing Nov. 4.

And a fire Sunday at Haley’s Motel has brought more suspicion that he has something to do with her disappearance, Cumber said.

Cumber was released from prison in September, after serving three years in prison on an arson conviction for burning down a former girlfriend’s house. He recently had been renting an apartment off Gulf Drive with Musil-Buehler.

His past, he says, makes him the perfect target for investigators.

Suspicious fire under investigation

HOLMES BEACH — Police are calling a fire at Haley’s Motel on Sunday night “suspicious” because the motel’s co-owner has been missing for two weeks.

Excerpt: Sheriff’s detectives have questioned Thomas Buehler, who is separated from Musil-Buehler, several times. Investigators also have questioned several times Musil-Buehler’s boyfriend, William Cumber, according to Bristow.

Cumber, who was released from prison in September after three years on an arson conviction, denied having anything to do with Musil-Buehler’s disappearance or the fire in an interview Monday with the Bradenton Herald.

Cumber said fire investigators came to his apartment a few blocks from Haley’s shortly after the fire broke out and took his shoes when a specially trained dog smelled chemicals on them.

Cumber said he had sprayed an anti-rust agent on a lock that had been giving him trouble.

“I guess some got on my shoes,” Cumber said.

Missing woman's boyfriend questioned

. . . . .

HOLMES BEACH - Within hours of a Sunday night fire that destroyed part of a motel owned by missing Holmes Beach resident Sabine Musil-Buehler, police questioned her boyfriend, William J. Cumber.

On Monday, they named Cumber as a "person of interest" in the investigation into the 7:20 p.m. fire that destroyed a two-story duplex next to Haley's Motel on Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach.

Cumber, 38, was not able to provide satisfactory information about his whereabouts at the time of the fire, police said.

"He has plenty of answers," said Holmes Beach Police Chief Jay Romine. "We just have to figure out which one is right."

Husband of missing woman shocked by fire

HOLMES BEACH — Thomas Buehler said he remains in shock after part of his motel went up in flames in the midst of a search for his missing wife, who he believes is dead.

As Buehler continued to clean up from damage to a charred duplex on the Haley’s Motel property he owns with Sabine Musil-Buehler, he reflected Wednesday on the disappearance of his wife and the fire Sunday evening.

“Instead of shooting me in the head with a bullet and killing me, someone is trying to hurt me by shooting me in the head with darts,” he said. “I am absolutely shocked by everything that has happened.”
