Mich. teen pleads guilty to poisoning grandma

Fri Oct 10, 1:03 pm ET

ADRIAN, Mich. – A 16-year-old Michigan girl has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for poisoning her grandmother with morphine.

Kristina Adkins entered the plea Friday in a packed courtroom in the southeastern Michigan town of Adrian. She was only 13 in 2006, when 53-year-old Virginia Bentley was poisoned.

The girl's attorney, Mike McFarland, said she turned to poison because she was mistreated by her grandmother.

Prosecutor Jonathan Poer was not immediately available for comment.

Because of her age, Kristina could receive a maximum life term as an adult, but a judge could consider her juvenile status as well and choose lighter punishment at sentencing Oct. 31.

guess we know why the poster didn't offer the insight to the sweet girl she/he posted about!

ADRIAN — A 16-year-old girl who killed her grandmother by poisoning her with morphine was sentenced Friday to life in prison with a chance for parole in 20 years.

Kristina Adkins cried as she apologized for poisoning Virginia Bentley in 2006. Adkins was 13 at the time.

Probate Judge Margaret Noe opted to sentence Adkins as an adult. She could have placed her in a juvenile facility until age 21 and then evaluated whether prison should be appropriate, court administrator David Stanifer said.

"She was very emotional and was crying," Stanifer said of Adkins. "I think she realized some serious consequences were going to hit."

"The judge received numerous letters from family members, both supporting a light sentence and a very severe sentence," Stanifer said.

Adkins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Oct. 10. Her attorney, Mike McFarland, claims she was mistreated by Bentley, 53.

McFarland told the court that Adkins had a troubled childhood that included mental health problems and drug abuse by the time she was 13, according to The Daily Telegram of Adrian.

McFarland said Adkins never gave a specific explanation for why she wanted to kill her grandmother. "I think it was cumulative of her entire life experience," he said.

Lenawee County is on the Michigan-Ohio border."

Kristina

Kristina Adkins is my best friends cousin. she is a very good kid. she has just been deal a ****ty hand and she handled it in the only way she knew how. This girl told me as did her sister in their own words that there grandma used to hit them with hangers extension cords and anything else that was with in distance of her to grab. I feel this girl should have been tried as a juvinile considering she was 13 when this happened. I have stayed in the same house with her slept in the same room with her and much more. She was a very happy kid unless some said something to really upset her. but if you have any actual questions you like to ask me feel free and i will answer them as best as i can...
