The former San Jose high school teacher accused of trying to solicit sex from a teenage girl online appeared in court Friday morning, but did not enter a plea.
James Barany, 37, of San Jose asked for time to hire his own attorney.
Judge Jeff Almquist told Barany, who is free on $25,000 bail, to not have contact with girls younger than 18, either in person or online. District Attorney's Office requested the stipulation.
Barany nodded and responded "Yes, sir."
Barany was the band director at Overfelt High School in east San Jose. Friday morning, he sat in the back row of the courtroom gallery dressed in gray slacks, a white striped shirt and a tie as he waited for his case to be called. He returns to court Sept. 3, at which time it's expected he will enter a plea.
