TAMSIN Barnett showed she was the perfect partner for beach volleyball champion Natalie Cook by driving the pair to a 2-1 win over Russia. ...

Nat one in the 2000 Olympics as well but she was playing with a different partner Kerry Potthurst. Nice start to the games! She said the smog wouldn't be a problem for her as long as she could see the other side of the court lol!

U.S. volleyball coach in-law murdered in Beijing
A knife-wielding man attacked two U.S. tourists at a popular Beijing attraction, leaving one dead and the other seriously injured.
The attacker, a Chinese national, then committed suicide. He threw himself off the second level of the Drum Tower, a 13th century structure about eight kilometres from the main Olympics site, on Saturday.
Todd Bachman, father of former U.S. Olympian Elisabeth Bachman, died. His wife Barbara survived but suffered life-threatening injuries. Elisabeth is married to Hugh McCutcheon, the U.S. men's volleyball coach, The Associated Press reported.

Her's something else that breaks the whole tradition of the Olympics. The Russians have attacked Georgia while they are both competing in the Olympics.

US: Russia dangerously escalating tensions with Georgia
The US says Russia is dangerously escalating tensions with Georgia by its heavy military assault, including the use of strategic bombers and missiles.
A senior US official said Russia had attacked areas of the former Soviet state that are far away from the separatist province of South Ossetia, where the fighting has centered. The Bush administration also said the Russian military was striking civilian areas.
The official said Saturday that Moscow's military response was disproportionate to the threat and Russia had stymied attempts at mediation aimed at arranging a cease-fire.

LOL! My son goes around shouting out that stupid little chant and I too am guilty of using it once or twice. Grating isn't it especially when being sung by a group of blind drunk footballers in a pub!

Hubby and I watched the US "smash" the French in a swimming relay that the French were favored to win last night. . . it came down to a finger tip. Exciting race! Speaking of upsets, how about that macho American beach volleyball dual that got knocked out there first game by Latvia's first ever team!!! I'm patriotic and all, but it's neat to see an under-dog come out of nowhere like that! I LOVE THE OLYMPICS!
Been watching gymnastics as well. . . like always, I sit in awe and wonder how anyone can do what they do!

Sorry. Thought I was over it. I'm not.

Spanish.
Been watching Trickett too! The Aussies have a great swim team!
I also like to see the Hungarians win. . . I lived there for a year and swimming is one of their best sports.

With the loss of two-time Olympians Paul Hamm and Morgan Hamm to injury, the Americans were without a single returning Olympian. But they persevered and, on a night when they needed to be virtually error-free to medal, they were virtually error-free until nearly the end.
And they walk away with a bronze medal that, to American eyes, will shine just as brightly as the gold medal that China and its arena filled with fans celebrated with such emotion.

Fab effort by Steph Rice to win gold in the IM today and set another world record. She said she had to come out after Coughlin from the US who swam the butterfly really hard but it was an amazing race between Rice and the Zimbabwean.

Is it me, or did Phelps look seriously worn out yesterday? He raced well, but the boyish glee was gone when he won. Maybe he is finding his success overwhelming? He is an awesome athlete and has done the US proud. I just hope his schedule eases up soon and he can enjoy what's left of the Olympics.
Last night I stayed up to watch the women gymnastics final. It was a bummer to see some of the girls so gloomy on the podium. Watching the thrill the guys experienced by getting the bronze metal was priceless. I'm looking forward to the individual events.
Also, I loved it when Bella made a statement about the Chinese girls being 14 or 15. . . there is just no way the whole team is 16 or above! Come on China, we're not idiots!

Phelps now has 11 gold metals and holds the distinction of having more than any other Olympian EVER!

I have watched Michael Phelps win all but one medal, No matter how late it was on I was watching. I was shouting for Lezak when he was swimming the last leg of the 4x100 relay. That was exciting as well.

Considering the personal tragedy McCutcheon suffered a few weeks ago - its awesome he and his team won today.
Tonights the last night - the olympics are over.
