Hacker Activity at CL
It seems we have numerous threads going on this subject - most of them titled something like How do I close my acct. Just an FYI - the hacker is still active here - moving my post here from another thread...
Quote:
It appears the hacker is still actively busy breaking into peoples accounts. If you will look at the "nic" doosmom44 in the current users list on the main index page it shows her as logged in yet on her profile it says - Last activity 10-27-2006, when it should say Last activity Today at such and such a time.

If you've recieved an email from CL saying you attempted to log-in to your acct 5 times etc and it list the following IP then this is the same hacker that took down In Session, Tru TV and Help Find The Missing.
The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 212.143.129.220 (the last 3 numbers may vary)

This is the IP they sent me: 212.143.129.233
That IP comes in under the RIPE network. If you query them, it gives you lots more detail. That page for the IP above even gave me a phone number

The IP they sent me was 212.143.129.213.
I'm not trying to make a big deal about this, but its a cracker not a hacker. hackers are people who tinker with computers, crackers crack computers and such...sorry but i had to put that out there...

Hacker is still the correct term.
According to dictionary.com:
hacker: a microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems.
cracker: a programmer who cracks (gains unauthorized access to) computers, typically to do malicious things; "crackers are often mistakenly called hackers"
The person trying to gain access via our accounts is a hacker...they are TRYING but not succeeding too much. Hence, hacker.
Btw, I just recently got another email informing me of an attempt. The IP this time is: 212.143.129.218

I thought cracker was a naughty word (unless it's edible).

I thought there was a way the admin here could block an IP number? I wonder why that hasn't been done yet considering the fact the IP is the same one (aside from the last 3 numbers) going out to multiple people.

I'm not sure what kind of software runs this board, but at a small board my husband and I run for family and friends to keep in touch, there IS a block IP function. Fairly easy to do.
We COULD just jot down the phone numbers that come up associated with the IPs and call them............collect.

Would you believe that the Help Find The Missing message board has been hacked again?
This is insane!

I posted this yesterday on another thread but I feel it bears repeating .
Most importantly run a scan now!!!
Here are some things to think about for everyone was concerned about message boards being hacked!
1. What is to be gained by disrupting the Internet?
2. Who would have a motive to do this?
3. Why attack via message boards?
4. How vulnerable are you personally?
5. What responsibility do you need to take upon yourself to protect your self?
These are my suggestions to my questions.
1. Many people in the World today use the Internet for communication, information, and business transactions. Disruption of our daily commerce and communications would be detrimental to our economy. Interruption of dissemination of information to the public could cause adverse and detrimental repercussions globally. This would leave society in the worst scenario.
2. My opinion is that anyone wanting to divert scrupulous attention from whatever agenda they might have, to a contrived crisis that would take the public into a frenzy of the fear. I would consider this a form of terrorism, a common tactic in the world that we live in today.
3. Computers are running, and unattended for many hours in the day. Most are visited briefly, and many users are not conscious of how many sites they have open. A virus that gets onto a computer is just like a social disease, you do not know when you have it and do not know who you are going give it to until it’s too late. Can you think of a better way to attack your enemy and let them destroy themselves internally?
4. We all know that we need to keep updated on all of our Internet firewalls, virus protection, anti spam and anti fishing programs. This needs to be the first line of defense for our computer security, and the security of our personal information.
5. Run your security updates daily; run them only from a trusted source with which you are familiar. Always run a scan prior to logging on to your computer for the day. Never open a link on an e-mail that your not familiar with, or that your security system advises you not to. Remember that curiosity killed the cat. Do not let the curiosity outweigh your common sense.

O2S: This is the complete range that should be blocked. If you do a search on the IP address listed in the email and google it - there are TONS of boards that have been hacked by the same address just the last 3 digits may be different; but same range. Anyway - FWIW - the complete range:
NetRange: 212.0.0.0 - 212.255.255.255
If this is done chances are it won't go any further. It appears it is in progress.

I just found that out also. Seems to be just the forums part. The main page is still ok.
Some people just seem to have too much time on their hands. Very sad.

Their IP is: 212.143.129.225
All I know is they tried and didn't make it in - anyone we can report it to that would take down the IP addy's and find out who they go to in hopes that they will be caught??

I've just learned of a least three other sites that have been comprimised or at risk, inc. this one, I guess. Looks like 320 isn't effected yet. What a shame. So many people enjoy these boards.

Been out for the evening. . . expected to find a message stating that someone tried to access my account here (actually received two) BUT I did not expect to come here and find that HFTM has been hacked AGAIN!
