Savage Grace
Crime Library needs to do an article about the Barbara Baekeland murder. In 1972 her 25 year old son Antony stabbed her to death in their London flat. Barbara was an American socialite expat who had married into the wealthy Baekeland family, and inherited a plastics fortune. During Antony's trial allegations of an incestuous affair between the two surfaced. Antony was convicted of manslaughter (the diminished capacity defense worked). When he was released in 1980, he moved to NYC, stabbed his grandmother (non fatally) and was sent to Riker's Island, where he committed suicide by asphyxiation in 1981.
A new film, Savage Grace, starring Julianne Moore as Barbara Baekeland is in post-production. The film is based on a book about the murder by the same title.
