I've always had a sense of dismay that in so many publicized cases, female sex offenders/pedophiles receive such light sentences compared to their male counterpoints.
Debra LeFavre, a very pretty 26 year old blond teacher admitted to having sex with a 14 year old male student in both her office at school and in her home and pled guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery in November 2005. For this she received 3 years house arrest (and I assume she lost her teaching liscense) in lieu of 15 years of prison.
She was rearrested for having unsupervised contact with a minor, a 17-year old female co-worker, a violation of her sentencing agreement. Of course his lawyer is pooh-poohing it as insignificant, as perhaps it was, but people have been violated for less.
My main concern is this: In several cases that have been publicized involving female defendants, the sentencing his been extremely light compared to what a male teacher having sex with a 14 year old girl would receive. I suppose it's the perception that female/male abuse is less harmful ("hey, what [male] kid wouldn't want to have a teacher like that?") but the message it sends is plain wrong, IMO. It's either right or it's not, and the perp should be punished according to the crime not the perception.
