Baby on life support after rape, police say

A 10-month-old Troy Hill girl was on life support Friday after police said her mother's boyfriend beat and sexually assaulted her.

Clinton Smith, 30, was arraigned on charges including aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, rape and endangering a child, according to an arrest affidavit.

He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The baby was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland with severe bruising to her face, arms and legs. Police said she was bitten on the chest.

"The doctors are telling us it doesn't look good," city police Lt. Daniel Herrmann said. "If the baby survives, she may be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life."

The infant's mother told investigators she left her Herman Street home shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday to go to work. She said she left Smith, her live-in boyfriend, in charge of the baby girl and Smith's 2-year-old son, according to the affidavit. It isn't clear whether Smith is the girl's father, police said. — continued

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A local man is facing some very serious charges today as a young child fights for her life after police say the man assaulted her in their home on Thursday.

Authorities say it all started around 10pm Thursday when paramedics were called to Herman Street in Troy Hill for a report of an unresponsive child.

When the medics arrived, investigators report that they found a 10-month old girl in cardiac arrest and when they noticed signs of abuse police were also called to the home.

According to police, the child was both physically and sexually assaulted.

Police say they have arrested 30-year-old Clinton Smith, the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother. — continued

The death of a 10-month-old Troy Hill girl who police said was beaten and sexually assaulted by her mother's live-in boyfriend officially was ruled a homicide Sunday by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.

Odette and Raven thanx for that link! I just finished reading the article and I was shocked at the number of children killed by someone in the home each year. I know it seems lately every time I open a newspaper or log into the message boards I enjoy there is another child murdered in some horrific way.

I'll never understand it yet I continue to get inside their heads. The abusers head I mean.

How could someone listen to a baby scream as these little tiny babies must while getting beaten and/or raped? How is it even physically possible for a grown man to rape a tiny baby?

At my previous place of employment, my managers grandson was on that meth and stole his own niece and raped her. She was around 6 months old I believe. She's had more than two surgeries, she will never have kids and I have no idea anything else she has to endure. I was so shocked to think I had met someone capable of this sort of thing and never had it cross my mind.

I was a divorced woman with a 4 yr. old daughter when I began seeing my 2nd husband. We openly talked about this sort of thing. It was made very clear that I don't/didn't hit my child and no one else was going to either. If they did they would go to jail if I didn't kill them myself.

I can't imagine the guilt these mothers must have eating away at them for leaving their babies with these animals. I'm not saying the mothers should have known. I'm sure they thought their child was safe with the man or they would not have left them. But still there must be so much guilt for them ................

I am wondering what we as a society are doing to prevent this sort of thing from continuing to occur. Do we need new laws?

It's even more infuriating and confusing when the mothers DO know the man is beating their child and let him or help him even! For instance Riley aka Baby Grace's mother even helped hide the body and lied for him. I actually think she beat Riley too but that's another board .............

Yes - I think instead of excusing people who commit crimes while drunk or on drugs should not get a lesser sentence but a longer one. If they want to do drugs then they better be ready to pay the consequences for their choices.

ITA, but if the crime results in a death the DA should have the option of requesting the DP. Now if the victim is a child as it is in this case, then no other punishment fits in my book. Damn the appeals and put the pervert out of our misery!!!

The sad reality of this case is that the taxpayers in this state will take on the burden of keeping this monster "safe and secure".
