Son is only suspect in shootings

» Petric Shooting News Conference
BRIGHTON TWP. — Sheriff’s deputies believe the 16-year-old son of a preacher shot and killed his mother and critically injured his father, Lorain County Sheriff’s Capt. Rich Resendez said.Daniel Petric was being held Sunday night in the county juvenile detention center while sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate the shooting death of 43-year-old Sue Petric.
Her husband, the Rev. Mark Petric, 45, pastor of New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, was shot in the face and remained in critical condition Sunday night at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
Daniel is expected to be charged by a magistrate in court this afternoon.
“We believe that Daniel is the sole person responsible for this tragedy,” Resendez said Sunday. “He has given us some details about what occurred and indicated some of his reasoning, but we’re not discussing any motive at this time.”
Deputies were called to the Petrics’ home at 51899 Peck Wadsworth Road in Brighton Township about 6:58 p.m. Saturday by the couple’s 21-year-old daughter, Heidi Archer, Resendez said.
Archer and her husband, Andrew, had gone to her parents’ home to watch the Indians game. When they arrived, however, Daniel stopped the couple at the front door.
“He indicated that he did not want the Archers to come into the residence,” Resendez said.
Heidi Archer pushed past her brother and found her parents slumped and bleeding on two separate couches in the living room of the home, Resendez said. Andrew Archer immediately checked for a pulse on his mother-in-law and, finding none, began performing CPR on Mark Petric. continued: »

Daniel Petric, 16, to be charged with slaying mother, wounding father, a pastor in Wellington
He killed his mother, shot pastor father, police say
cleveland.com/news - Michael Sangiacomo and Jesse Tinsley - October 22, 2007
Elyria - Authorities plan to charge a 16-year-old today on suspicion of killing his mother and seriously wounding his pastor father.
Daniel Petric is likely to face a murder charge at a magistrate hearing this afternoon, said Capt. Rich Resendez of the Lorain County Sheriff's Office. Daniel was being held Sunday at the Lorain County Detention Home.
His mother, Sue, 43, was pronounced dead Saturday at their home in Brighton Township, outside Wellington. His father, Mark, 45, was in guarded condition at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland after being shot in the face. He has been in and out of consciousness since the shooting, said Hal Stiles, a member of New Life Assembly of God, where Mark Petric is pastor.
Resendez said Sunday that Daniel acted alone and is "responsible for the tragic acts." Daniel is a "typical 16-year-old," a Wellington High School junior who liked skateboarding and may have argued with his parents in the past, Resendez said.
Resendez did not give a motive or say whether the crime was premeditated, just that there were no signs of struggle and that Daniel "indicated some reasoning."
However, for the congregation that relied on the Petrics, Sunday was not a day to ask why. Instead, members of New Life Assembly of God comforted one another.
More than 75 church members at Sunday morning services said they need to come together as a family and work through the crisis, and forgive. continued: » X 2 Pages

Acquaintances say there were no warning signs
chroniclet.com - Lisa Roberson | The Chronicle-Telegram - October 23, 2007
BRIGHTON TWP. — Red flags that could have indicated a teenage boy was on the verge of violence just weren’t present in 16-year-old Wellington High School student Daniel Petric, according to those who knew him.
The preacher’s son allegedly shot and killed his mother and shot his father in the face Saturday evening.
The people who knew Daniel said he was a typical teenage boy who stood out neither academically nor socially. He wasn’t a troublemaker, either.
Instead, the 11th-grader appeared to fly under the radar.
“There was nothing about him that would make us profile him toward violence,” Wellington Superintendent Victor Cardenzana said.
Nonetheless, Daniel is being held at the county juvenile detention center on charges of attempted murder and murder.
“He was a funny guy, liked to rag on the teachers sometimes,” said 16-year-old Aaron Fortier, a 10th-grader at Wellington High School. continued: »

Pastor's son charged in mother's murder, father's shooting
cleveland.com - John Caniglia and Molly Kavanaugh - October 22, 2007
The 16-year-old boy accused of killing his mother and shooting his father in the face can quote the book of Hebrews and the Gospel of St. John.
Daniel Petric's friends describe him as an average, upbeat teenager who loves to clown around. Police, though, call him a killer who fired four shots into his parents with his dad's gun. His mother, Susan, is dead; his father, Mark, a pastor at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, is in critical condition.
The shootings leave one central question: Why?
Daniel Petric was charged Monday with murder and attempted murder, and the Lorain County prosecutor plans to try him as an adult. Authorities said the Wellington teen admitted shooting his parents. Wounds to his mother's forearms indicate she was facing her son, defending herself as he fired the fatal shots.
Police and prosecutors refuse to discuss a motive in the Saturday night shooting.
They said that they, too, are looking into the boy's background and statements he made. Was he a great kid who got into trouble for the first time in his life, or was he a troubled teen who continued along his wrecked course?
"There are conflicting stories," said Lorain County Sheriff's Capt. Richard Resendez.
Some family, friends and school officials offer clashing details. He was a boy who scoured his Bible. He loved shooting guns with his father. He was an average student, would keep to himself when he got mad, yet seemed to get along with his parents, who were his first teachers - he was home-schooled for years. continued: » X 3 Pages

Pastor's Son Charged
chroniclet.com - Adam Wright - October 23, 2007
911 Audio from the Petric shooting
ELYRIA — Daniel Petric sat expressionless Monday as a county Juvenile Court magistrate read off the charges leveled against him — murder for the shooting death of his mother and attempted murder for allegedly shooting his father, a pastor at a Wellington church, in the face.
The 16-year-old uttered a muffled yes when Magistrate Stephen Blake asked if he understood the charges. Once or twice the chains that connected his handcuffed wrists and ankles clinked together as he reached up to scratch his boyish face, or adjust the baggy prison jumpsuit he wore.
Sheriff’s Capt. Rich Resendez said Daniel admitted to shooting his parents, although Resendez declined to discuss the teen’s motive.
But during his arrest, Daniel is heard on a cruiser’s dashboard camera telling Wellington police officers that his dad killed his mom, according to footage obtained by WOIO-Channel 19.
Resendez also said several people told deputies that Daniel and his parents had been arguing more often in the weeks leading up to the shooting. continued: »
Excerpt: The Rev. Mark Petric, 45, remained in critical condition late Monday at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He is a preacher at New Life Assembly Church of God on West Road in Wellington.
He and his wife, 43-year-old Sue Petric, were found Saturday night slumped and bleeding on a couch in the living room of their Peck-Wadsworth Road home in Brighton Township by their 21-year-old daughter, Heidi Archer.
Archer and her husband, Andy Archer, had come over to the house to watch the Indians game. She can be heard sobbing loudly throughout the 911 call she made upon finding her parents.
“My brother, he met us at the door and said ‘don’t come in,’ and Andy said, ‘Why? Why?’ My dad was making a weird noise and my husband opened the door, and that’s what happened,” she can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher on a recording of the call.
“Oh Lord, why is this happening?” shouted Heidi Archer.

Teen made Gun Threat
chroniclet.com - Adam Wright - October 24, 2007
Daniel Petric had been in trouble before being accused of killing his mother and shooting his father.
Four years ago, police were called to McCormick Middle School in Wellington after Daniel was overheard threatening to bring a gun to school.
Daniel — a seventh-grader at the time — had been in the district for only two months after having moved to the area with his family from Columbus so his father, the Rev. Mark Petric, 45, could become the pastor at New Life Assembly of God on West Street.
Daniel told police he was joking around — that he was talking to another student about a play he was in at his father’s church, specifically a scene where kids used unloaded guns to rob a church and its minister.
A student asked him if he brought a gun to school, the report said. Daniel said yes and “started acting depressed to get attention,” the report said.
Daniel’s mother, Susan Petric, was called to the school to take her son home about 10 a.m. that day, and no charges were filed. The responding officer wrote in the report that he didn’t feel Daniel meant any harm but was only trying to get attention from the students since he was new to the school. continued: »

Suspect in mom’s killing wants to be at her funeral
chroniclet.com - Adam Wright | The Chronicle-Telegram - October 26, 2007
ELYRIA — A 16-year-old son of a preacher who has been charged with killing his mother and critically injuring his father will learn today if he can attend his mom’s funeral.
An attorney representing Daniel Petric has filed a motion requesting a furlough from the county Juvenile Detention Home so he can attend the funeral for 43-year-old Susan Petric on Saturday, according to a secretary in the office of Juvenile Administrator Doug Messer.
Sheriff’s deputies believe Daniel shot his mother three times — one of which struck her in the head and ended up in her brain.
Another bullet went through both forearms when she apparently threw her arms up as a defense, county coroner Paul Matus said.
His father, the Rev. Mark Petric, pastor at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, was shot once, although deputies have not indicated where he was injured. Mark Petric, 45, remained in critical condition Thursday night at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to a hospital spokeswoman. — continued: »

How senseless. I am so glad it seems the father will pull through. I am afraid if he had not then both victims would have been demeaned by their own child who tried to kill them both. At least he will be able to speak the truth in Petric's trial.
This reminds me of another case in my hometown a few years back. A double murder committed by another young teenage boy. He killed his mother and little 5 year old sister and the reasoning he gave was he was tired of having to do his chores and his sister got in his way and "bugged" him.
What is happening to our young people? It is so frightening when one must be fearful of those that live in their own homes that are supposed to love them.

Teen suspect says goodbye to mother
chroniclet.com - Brad Dicken | The Chronicle-Telegram
WELLINGTON — Daniel Petric got to say goodbye Friday to the mother he stands accused of gunning down.
The 16-year-old Wellington High School junior spent less than 15 minutes visiting Sue Petric’s remains at New Life Assembly of God after a county judge ordered that he be given a private viewing before visiting hours began Friday afternoon. The church is where Daniel’s father, the Rev. Marc Petric, whom Daniel also allegedly shot, is the pastor.
Daniel’s attorneys had asked that he be allowed to attend his mother’s funeral Saturday, but county Juvenile Court Judge David Berta ordered that he have no contact with his family or anyone else during the half-hour visit he was allotted.
Berta said he believed that Daniel, who has not been convicted of any crime, had a right to have closure because he would have to deal with his mother’s death for the rest of his life. — continued: »

Judge allows teen accused of killing mom to attend church viewing
mansfieldnewsjournal.com - October 27, 2007
ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) -- The teenage son of a preacher charged in the shooting death of his mother had a chance to say goodbye to her at a church viewing Friday after a judge granted him a 30-minute jail furlough.
Daniel Petric, 16, who also is accused of critically wounding his father, initially requested permission to attend his mother's funeral, but the judge refused to extend the furlough privilege beyond the viewing.
Lorain County Domestic Relations Judge David Berta granted Petric a visit supervised by a court employee and sheriff's deputies with no family members present.
"I have to protect the public, but I also have to protect the juvenile's well being," Berta said. "I have to think about the long-term effect, psychologically. He will have to live with this the rest of his life, no matter what happens."
Petric, shackled and dressed in a gray inmate jump suit, was taken by a jail van to his father's church for the visit. — continued: »

Decision to allow teen accused of shooting parents to pay respects angers some
wkyc.com - Michael O'Mara - Updated:10/27/2007
LORAIN -- A Lorain County judge has ruled that 16-year-old Daniel Petric, accused of shooting his parents last weekend, will be allowed out of custody to pay his final respects to his mother.
The teen's mother, Sue Petric, died of her injuries. His father, Pastor Mark Petric, suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized.
Daniel had also petitioned the court to be allowed a temporary furlough to attend his mother's funeral Saturday. The judge denied that request.
The visitation with his mother's body took place late this afternoon at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Wellington. Sheriff deputies quickly escorted Petric back into custody after the emotional visit.
Judge David Berta said that it was important to allow Daniel Petric to visit his mother because of concerns about the teenager's long term psychological and emotional well being.
The judge said that emotional closure could be helpful to the suspect accused of shooting his parents. However, Judge Berta did limit the visitation to one half hour and stipulated that no other family member could be present. — continued: »

Sue Petric is laid to rest
chroniclet.com - Jason Hawk - October 28, 2007
AVON — More than 500 mourners did not dwell Saturday morning on the shooting that killed Sue Petric, 43, of Wellington, or the murder charges pending against her 16-year-old son.
Rather, they remembered the way she lived. — continued: »
Excerpt: Mark Petric has regained consciousness and since his surgery Thursday, he is making steady strides toward recovery, said the Rev. Roger Larrison of the Christian Heritage Center.
On Friday — almost a week after the shooting — Mark was told that his wife had been killed, Larrison said. http://www.chroniclet.com/2007/10/28...s-laid-to-rest

Ocean, I don't have an easy or quick answer to your question. Violent people have always been a part of the world's landscape, and sometimes I wonder if young people such as this boy haven't been exposed to an overabundance of violence on TV, in the news, movies, games, etc. Unless I am missing something, the overwelming majority of violent young people are males. When was the last time you read of a young teenage girl shooting up, or planning to, her school?
According to what we have been told so far, DP's reasoning for the shootings was that he was tired of the arguing in his family. Show me a teenager who doesn't argue with their parents, for crying out loud. My mother and I had a verbal showdown every day for a very long time, but the thought never crossed my mind to turn it into a violent episode. It was an argument, mostly fueled by my confusion, raging hormones, and ignorance of the real world. I think even then I was aware of all of the above, which probably made it even harder for me to see my parents' POV.
At any rate, it could also be our society's tendency to excuse away every crime of passion. Most killers do not get a hall pass after killing someone, but it does happen now and then. And look how much publicity they receive! In a twisted way, that could be contributing as well to the proliferation of young people taking out their aggressions with a gun or other weapon.
What happened in this case we can't be certain, but I believe you are correct that if both the father and mother had died, they would have been dragged through the mud at trial.

I certainly don't know the answer either Marcia. I feel as you do........its a combination of things.
While we do not have females who go into schools to kill people (yet) we are seeing crime escalating in the female population as well. So who knows how it will be 20 years from now or if there is even much difference in female and male defendants who are doing same like crimes.
We have heard of teenager girls killing their parents or having friends kill them all because they weren't getting their way. It has to be so scary for parents today. Well the ones that are faithfully trying to instill a good road map for their children by giving them role models to follow. Then there are many parents who don't even care on whit about their kids. It seems uncanny though that it seems the parents who lose their lives are the ones that have tried to parent and support their children. How sad.
In some ways with the males I do believe we have instilled in them they must be tough and show no emotions so they stuff all of that uncontrollable rage and hurt inside ........like for instances when they are bullied at school. Somehow we have got to get these kids to open up and realize its okay to cry and talk about how they feel instead of resorting to such horrific events as this one.
I tend to think that for some reason some parents who have daughters worry more if something is wrong or bothering them and will sit down and ask them what is wrong but I think sometimes some of these parents who have boys don't give the same attentiveness and concern to his overall mental wellbeing. So they withdraw inside, mean and nasty festering those emotions. I think one of the reasons is we see our daughters as more vulnerable and with a boy....some tend to think maybe its just a changing of testosterone.
I do blame the violent video games as it desensitizes our youth. They are losing their connection to the outside world where they must learn to live with all people to succeed in life. I also think it is very wrong that the Paris Hiltons and Brittney Spears are what these young girls want to be like while they are nothing but the picture of what not to be like in one's life. Yet teenage girls pay millions each year for all the trash mags on these divas.
However in this case it would not surprise me this boy lashed out because his parents rules were very strict and he wanted to do as he pleased like the other kids and when he wasn't getting his way he simply tried to remove his obstacle that was in the way of getting what he wanted. The ones who argued with him he couldn't do what he wanted to do. His father has to be devastated by it all. His wife murdered and his son who is going to face murder and attempted murder charges.

Petric set for adult court
morningjournal.com - ALEX M. PARKER - 11/10/2007
ELYRIA -- Daniel Petric, the 16-year-old Brighton Township boy accused of killing his mother and wounding his father, is now in the adult criminal system.
Petric's attorneys waived his right for a probable cause hearing in Lorain County Juvenile Court, and Judge David Berta bound his case over to the grand jury.
According to state law, a juvenile 16 years or older charged with murder has to be tried as an adult.
Petric's attorney, James Kersey, offered to plea his client guilty to the charges in juvenile court, but Berta refused to accept the plea, claiming he did not have jurisdiction.
After the hearing, Kersey said he offered the plea because a guilty conviction in the juvenile court would be much shorter than a conviction in the criminal courts.
''That's simple math,'' said Kersey. ''Six years versus 30 to life.'' — continued
