Pair found in life raft suspected of killing charter boat crew

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Two men found last week in a life raft in the Florida Straits are suspected of having murdered the crew of the boat they chartered and then attempting to seek refuge in Cuba.
A file photo of the Joe Cool, a charter fishing boat found derelict in the Florida StraitThe bodies of the four crew members have not been found, but "it's obvious there is circumstantial evidence that four homicides took place here," Magistrate William Turnoff said.
The two suspects-- Kirby Archer, 34, and Guillermo Zarabozo, 19, -- were denied bond Tuesday. The magistrate ruled they are a danger to the community and flight risks.

Missing are the boat's captain, Jake Branam; his wife, Kelly; and crew members Scott Campbell and Sammy Cary.

"Your theory is they killed the four?" Turnoff asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gilfarb at a bond hearing Tuesday.
"Yes, your honor," Gilfarb replied.
During the hearing, details emerged about the alleged hijacking of the 47-foot Joe Cool.

Search under way after boat crew disappears

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The FBI is searching for the four-person crew of a Miami Beach charter boat as part of an investigation into what a bureau spokeswoman called "a possible crime on the seas
FBI agents were questioning the two men who chartered the boat as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter carrying the pair returned to shore shortly after noon Tuesday with the 47-foot charter fishing boat, Joe Cool, in tow.
Relatives of the fishing boat's crew called authorities Sunday evening to say the vessel had not returned as scheduled after being hired Saturday afternoon.
Late Sunday, the Coast Guard spotted the boat floating 160 miles south of Bimini in the Bahamas with no one on board, its contents in disarray and one life raft aboard.
"It looks like whoever was on board left in a hurry," Coast Guard Petty Officer James Judge said.
Missing are the boat's captain, Jake Branam; his wife, Kelly; and crew members Scott Campbell and Sammy Cary

New Information Surfaces About Two Men Found At Sea

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- An appeal in a custody fight obtained by Local 10 may prove that the two men found adrift at sea knew each other for years.

The FBI took Guillermo Zarabozo, 19, and Kirby Archer, 35, into custody in the mystery at sea regarding the missing crew of a charter fishing vessel Tuesday. New information could possibly shed light on the two men and what happened aboard the Joe Cool.

Zarabozo and Archer, the two clients of the charter Joe Cool, were questioned aboard a Coast Guard cutter then brought to Miami Beach Coast Guard base around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. About 10 minutes later, the 47-foot sportfisher Joe Cool was brought in, pulled by a smaller Coast Guard vessel

Suspect: 'Hijackers' Killed Missing Crew Members

Zarabozo Claims "Unknown Subjects" Hijacked Boat, Killed Crew Members

MIAMI Two men at the center of a bizarre boat trip to the Bahamas are being held at a federal detention center in Miami as the FBI tries to solve an ocean disappearance mystery. One of those men who hired the charter boat is also a fugitive robbery suspect.

Kirby Logan Archer, 35, of Strawberry, Ark., is wanted in his home state for allegedly stealing more than $92,000 in January from a Wal-Mart where he was an assistant manager. He also has a checkered military past: he went AWOL from the Army four years ago.

Archer and 19-year-old Guillermo Zarabozo, of Hialeah, appeared in federal court Wednesday, but neither has been charged in connection with the missing people as the FBI keeps investigating.

Meanwhile, Coast Guard ships and aircraft searched hundreds of miles of open ocean in heavy rain for the crew members who have been missing since Sunday.
