By David N. Goodmane DETROIT (AP) — An assistant U.S. attorney from Florida was arrested in an Internet sting operation after flying to Michigan to have sex with a 5-year-old girl, authorities said Monday.
John D.R. Atchison, 53, was arrested Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after several weeks of Internet conversations between the prosecutor and a detective posing as the mother of a 5-year-old girl, authorities say.
"There wasn't much reaction from him at all," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said. Atchison was cooperative with authorities, he said.
He was charged with using interstate communication to entice a minor to have sexual contact and traveling across state lines with the intent of engaging in illicit sexual contact. If convicted of both charges, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
According to court records, Atchison initiated an online chat Aug. 29 with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in letting men have sex with her daughter.
At one point, Atchison said: "I'm always gentle and loving; not to worry; no damage ever; no rough stuff ever ever," according to an affidavit filed in court.
Atchison, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., is a prosecutor for the U.S. attorney's office for northern Florida, based in Tallahassee. He requested a court-appointed lawyer at his hearing Monday.

How disgusting.  A prosecutor for the U.S. attorney's office no less. Even more reason to lock him up and throw away the key.

A prosecutor  -- he needs to be thrown UNDER the jail instead of in it. Geez. I wonder just how many pedophiles are in government which would explain why pedophiles get minimum sentences.

Makes you wonder how many times he did this before and if he has I certainly hope he turns over some names, not for a plea deal, but for the kids sake. JMO.

DETROIT (AP) -- A U.S. prosecutor and youth sports leader from Florida who authorities say flew to Michigan for an expected sexual encounter with a 5-year-old girl was indicted on an additional charge Tuesday and ordered held without bond.
U.S. Magistrate Virginia M. Morgan also lifted a suicide watch for John D.R. Atchison.
Atchison, 53, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., is an assistant U.S. attorney in northern Florida, based in Pensacola. He is married with three children and has been active in youth sports in his hometown.
He was arrested Sunday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after arriving for a meeting with what he thought was the mother of a 5-year-old girl with whom he arranged to have sex, authorities said. In fact, the woman was a Macomb County sheriff's detective and part of an Internet sex sting operation.
He originally faced charges of use of the Internet to seek illicit sex, which carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years; and interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual contact, which carries up to 30 years.
On Tuesday, a federal grand jury added a charge of crossing state lines with intent to have sex with someone under 12, which carries a minimum 30-year prison sentence and a maximum of life.
