Man buries daughters alive

Ahmadabad - A man was arrested and charged for allegedly burying alive his 6-day-old twin daughters near his home in western India.

The baby girls later died, police said on Friday.

Samantsinh Sodha wanted a son but his wife gave birth to baby girls last week in Nakhtrana, a town in the western state of Gujarat, said superintendent GS Malik.

Indian society has long favoured boys, who do not require the enormous dowry payments that bankrupt many poor families when their daughters marry.

Sodha, a gas station attendant, took the twins away while his wife was sleeping and buried them in a pit on Wednesday night, said Malik.

Police arrested him on Thursday, said the police officer.

It was not immediately known if Sodha had a lawyer who could comment.

Many expectant couples in India will abort a foetus if they find it is a girl.

International groups say the widespread practice of aborting female foetuses has killed more than 10 million female foetuses in the last two decades, leading to an imbalance in the ratio between males and females in India.

Nakhtrana is nearly 350km west of Ahmadabad, a key city in Gujarat state.

I'm all for cultural diversity, but this is just sickening. Didn't they learn any lessons from China, who were doing the same thing? My only 'condolence', so to speak, is that when their sons grow up, there aren't going to be any girls to get married to.

This is very tragic,,, yet it is not in our local newspaper,,, the apec breach of security is,,, which is of course for more important...

I would like for you to send this too your local mp,, and local church,, any church will do,,

I would just like for them to come up with a justification for it.. in the name of the lord that is,,, as too why there is such an imbalance of male and female,, and why a female,, so undervalued in this country,, costs so much?????
