Final Decision: Should there be a limit on the amount of smileys used in a post?
Right now there is a limit of 12 or 13 smileys per post. Should there be a limit on the number used?

Yes cause when a whole row of smilies and no words are used time and time again it isnt really necessary and sometimes is only used to try and agitate other posters. I do realise for some people they could have problems putting what they mean to say but it is meant to be a discussion board jmo

I agree. It adds nothing to the discussion.

Wow, glad I found this poll! IMO, there is nothing to be gained by a row of clicking beer mugs!! I mean a row that stretches across the entire post! If the intent is to show agreement, then the intentions are lost by the sheer
"in your face" attitude that is attached.

I agree. I voted three. I think that's plenty to add "drama" or "emphasis" and some uniqueness to what you are expressing.
Anything else is just annoying, distracting, and quite honestly kinda immature.
I think it would be easier to maintain civility because the excessive emoticons are anything but intended as civil. And, it seems when they are excessive that the ones doing so are not adding much to the conversation in the first place.
Good idea and it won't kill any of us to be limited to three.
Great poll!!!

I'm chuckling over this poll. Some of those complaining were the biggest offenders with the gap toothed icon, using it as an insulting comment over at CTV message board, that Coldwater had to ban the use of it on one board. LOL

I do believe that, these are serious issues that involve jealousy & the need to control others. Sarcasm, rudeness, constant harassment & insults, are by far worse than using icons. Unfortunately, those things can't be disabled on the computer. Read my signature line, & you'll know what I'm mean. From now on, I won't reply with quotes, so that you can disable your smilies. It's a good idea, if others would do likewise. That way, no one has to see those icons, if they don't choose to do so. Total lack of respect for others & their rights, is also far more annoying than any number of icons. IMO

Limited, yes. Some use the icons simply as visual derailment.

I think that's hilarious too, cham! Too funny! It's a good thing there isn't a poll about rudeness. Rudeness constitutes disrespecting others, & their rights to their opinions. That being said, have a nice day everyone. I'm waving to you all, but, you can't see it because, I haven't used my icons, as this is from a quotation. IMO

That is not my intention, and I've stated numerous times, why, I like to use them. Rudeness, sarcasm, & disrespecting others & their rights to their opinions, is most definitely & obviously "derailment". IMO

I find this poll fascinating as well. All the voters from one particular forum, including a moderator, and there is only one poster in that particular forum that can possibly be accused of the "overuse of icons" complaint. Interesting.
Is this a "gang" thing? Do the other forums on this board have this problem, or is this just about one poster on one forum?
I see many votes on here for the "3 icon maximum", just like CTV. If I wanted to post on a forum "Just like CTV", I'd go there. I like this one better.
I'm not voting. I will not participate in a "gang" vote to single out one particular poster. Suffice it to say that I like the way things are here and would not change a thing.

The smilies can be fun but they can also be used to do nothing more than bait other posters. For some it seems to have become a signature of sorts, imo. I sure wouldn't miss them at all !!

Is this board for adults? For heavens sake, can't people learn to ignore, turn the smilies off, whatever!!
Is the need to control gone so far that now we are being told how many smilies to post.

On the thread I post on most often at CL. the biggest offender(s) uses nothing but smiles, in almost every single post. Suggesting to me that either it is used to bait and derail a thread, or some have no real thoughts or have nothing to contribute to any discussion here at CL. Please think about if every poster did this also, then you might have a very different veiw. I agree you can ignore and perhaps turn off the smiles, but that would not address the issue of why this is done by some in the first place. jmo

I shouldn't have to turn the smileys off because someone abuses them.

Let's be honest here for once. Coldwater banned the laughing icon because you and your friends complained about it. Pot/kettle???

My question with this poll was a reasonable question. The overuse of icons adds NOTHING to any discussion. It is done to mock and instigate.

You wouldn't be deprived of the smileys, just the abuse of them. Three, four or five is more then enough to get the point across.

NW, I don't think limiting the number of icons in a post is disrespecting a posters rights to their opinions. EVERYONE has a right to their opinion. I think the smilies are kinda like an exclamation point at the end of a sentence. It indicates a person feels strongly about what was stated. And that's okay. We all have things we feel strongly about. I think all the smilies serve a purpose, as long as they're used in moderation.

That is your interpretation of a poster's motive to use multiple icons. I've seen this done by one poster on one forum and MY interpretation is that is simply the poster's style. So, since when is it "reasonable" to make an issue that effects every poster here when there may be only one or two posters that are doing this?
Unless you can show me where enough posters are abusing the smilies to warrant a change, then I submit that this is simple a way to censor the one poster that I know of, which is how a "gang" operates. How simple it would be to just ignore the one, but, from reading your previous post, it appears that you don't wish to go that route.

I assure you I am in no gang, but honestly I haven't seen you using a ton of them in every one of your post's, I don't understand how limiting them would deprive you or anyone. I like the smiles to, but I don't see putting a limit as a bad thing. jmo

I voted for no limit. The limit of three icons over on CTV is annoying IMO. I don't usually use more than three, but when I quote someone else it becomes an issue. Let freedom ring I say!

I voted a limit of three.
You can say whatever you need to say quite adequately with three. More than that is distracting.
I don't use them often and would have no problem if they all flew the coop.

No Ma'am, I DID NOT COMPLAIN. You are absolutely 100% wrong on that. I kinda miss the laughing smilie and did not know what happened to it, but your accusation directed at me is way off base as I did nothing of the sort, which is a clear indication to me that you are "creating" stories to make your point.
Thanks for the lesson.

I seem to recall you weighing in on the complaints. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but I'm going by memory. I don't need to create stories.

Smilies do give a poster an opportunity to display emotion. If ones emotions can not be properly addressed using 3 smilies or less, then maybe the poster needs to learn to control their emotions better, jmo.

I voted for the limit of 3.......because, most of us post on more than just one forum here...many of us have seen them misused on all forums...it can be distracting...it really serves no purpose to have just icons in a post without adding to the conversation! That's just my humble opinion!
