Eye Doctor Accused of Killing Call Girl
Cudahy Eye Doctor Accused Of Killing Call Girl
POSTED: 7:22 am CDT August 14, 2007
UPDATED: 12:51 pm CDT August 14, 2007
CUDAHY, Wis. -- A well-respected optometrist from Cudahy has been arrested, accused of killing a prostitute.
According to a criminal complaint from Hennepin County, Minn., Minneapolis police were called to the University Radisson Hotel on Aug. 6 and found a 24-year-old prostitute, Alison Daniels, dead on the eighth floor. She had been shot in the head, the Hennepin County Medial Examiner's Office said.
The criminal complaint said there were signs of "an obvious struggle" and that hair, consistent with Daniels', was around the room.
Court records show that on July 24, two weeks prior before Daniels was killed, Daniels and another woman were in Las Vegas with Dean Barrette. The other woman said that she saw Barrette give Daniels a large envelope of money in exchange for the arrangement of a sham marriage. It's unclear why Barrette and the victim were planning the marriage. The other woman and Daniels left Las Vegas without Daniels making good on the wedding.

I find this statement by his mother rather odd
Eleanor Barrette said her son is a well-respected optometrist in Cudahy and she wants to know how it could have happened.
"He had a bad leg, he was taking medication, his leg was bothering him, so I don't know if that had something to do with it," she said.

Dean Barrette is a man of unshakable faith. How could he have murdered someone?
See last paragraph of this article, from the May 20, 2006 Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. (Note: There is only one Dean Barrette in Wisconsin, and Cudahy is indeed in the south shore part of the Milwaukee area.)
Dr. Dean, I am afraid, is going to get 25 years to life worth of bible-study time, with an occasional interruption for a shower or some bad food. The travel-to-Minneapolis-and-book-a-hotel-room trap/set-up counts as premeditation in most jurisdictions, Minneapolis presumably included.

Da Vinci' devotees delighted; Local moviegoers defy critics, give
DAVE TIANEN
The critics have had their kick at the Code. What do actual movie fans think?
A sampling of early reaction at area movie theaters Friday found that the moviegoers were far more impressed with "The Da Vinci Code" than the largely negative chorus from critics.
"I enjoyed it," said Theresa Krajnak at the Marcus South Shore Cinema in Oak Creek on Friday afternoon. "It was pretty close to the book. There were some jumps at the end. They skipped some of the difficult clues. For two-and-a-half hours, it moved well."
Her husband, John, also enjoyed the movie, but acknowledged that the character of Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks, had been changed somewhat from the book to make him more sympathetic to the divinity of Christ.
"It was very good, very accurate," Jodi Voegeli said. "If you're open to questioning religion, you'll like the movie. If you're not, you won't."
"The Da Vinci Code," based on the bestselling book by Dan Brown, is a thriller with, as its backdrop, a controversial theory: that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene had a child and their bloodline continues today.
The movie has received some harsh reviews since it premiered Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival. In his review, Journal Sentinel film critic Duane Dudek called director Ron Howard's movie "a continent-shifting, shadow-lurking, flashback-jumping scavenger hunt for the Holy Grail that lies as inert on the screen as it does on the page." (To read his review, go to www.jsonline.com/story/ index.aspx?id=424785.)
Still, "The Da Vinci Code" is expected to have a good weekend at the box office. Industry observers predicted a three-day opening weekend of $50 million to $100 million.
Kristine Schumann, 21, had read the book twice before joining her sister, Laura, for a matinee of the film at the Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee. After hearing some negative reviews of the film, Schumann, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, said she was expecting not to like it. But she did.
"I thought it was really powerful," she said. "I wasn't disappointed."
Michael Hallberg, who saw the movie at the South Shore Cinema, described the movie as "great."
"They didn't falsify the book; they just changed the order of some things," he said. "I thought it was a very good murder mystery."
At the AMC Mayfair Mall 18 in Wauwatosa, girlfriends Carol Reed, 62, Kathleen McManus, 52, and Patty Lemel, 54, walked out of the theater with wide grins on their faces.
"We had such a great time," said Reed of Hubertus.
"It followed the book really well. It wasn't too gory," said Lemel of Summit.
All raised Catholic, the three friends said they weren't bothered by what some have seen as anti-Catholic notions in the book and the movie.
"It really asks you to open up your mind and start thinking of more possibilities in life, instead of just accepting what's going on," Reed said.
Although some groups called for protests at some area screenings, a prescheduled protest at Marcus Northtown Cinema on Friday afternoon consisted of one woman with a sign reading "The Da Vinci Code ridicules Christ and His church." She declined to talk to a reporter.
Some first-day moviegoers felt the movie wasn't as compelling as the book.
Sara Johann, 49, who saw the movie at the Oriental, said there were parts of the book she wished were explained more thoroughly in the film adaptation. Still, Johann, who said she is writing a book about pushing equality of women in the Catholic Church, said she was glad to see the ideas in "The Da Vinci Code" attracting so much attention.
"The book and the movie are bringing up issues that are worth talking about," she said.
Some moviegoers said the movie did nothing to alter their views on religion.
"I still believe in the divinity of Christ," said Dean Barrette, after leaving a screening at South Shore Cinema. "It's just a book."

I find it strange he'd have to pay someone, particularly a call girl to marry him. Something very odd about all this. Thanks for the updates Odette.

I ran across this forum seeking more info and felt I needed to register and add a bit of info.
First, you should know that I'm only interested in this because Dean was a close friend of mine back in college, but I haven't spoken to him in probably 18 yrs.
The only info I feel free to add to your conversation is more info on the leg injury. Dean had suffered pretty major physical damage in a motorcycle wreck back in the early 80's. We were amazed at the time that he lived. He had permanent damage including a shattered leg that had to be pinned and bolted back together several inches shorter that the other. Left or right, I don't recall. I would have no idea about his meds, but 20 years is a long time to be in pain and pain meds.
As for other memories of Dean - I remember him being conservative in terms of religion, but not a raving evangelist. I believe that portrayal is incorrect. he had a temper, but nothing I remember as being abnormal.
anyway - I'm sad as hell about this. I lost contact with the guy and the next thing I see is a mug shot - and he clearly just wants to be dead. depressing.

Wis. man accused of killing Michigan woman found dead in jail
The Associated Press - 9/14/2007, 8:32 p.m. EDT
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A suburban Milwaukee optometrist suspected of killing a Michigan woman was found dead in his jail cell Friday.
Dean Barrette, 44, of Cudahy, had cellophane wrapped around his head and was unresponsive when a jailer pulled the covers off him after he didn't leave his cell for the lunch meal, said Kim Brooks, spokeswoman for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department.
She said attempts to revive Barrette failed and he was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m.
He apparently had saved cellophane that is used to cover meals, Brooks said.
Barrette was evaluated when he arrived at the jail Aug. 10, she said, and "there was no indication of suicidal tendencies."
Authorities didn't release a cause of death pending autopsy results expected Saturday.
"There is no evidence of foul play. He was in a cell by himself," Brooks said.
He had been awaiting extradition to Hennepin County in Minnesota regarding the slaying of Alison Daniels, 24, an online escort from East Lansing, Mich., who was believed to have left him at the altar in Las Vegas.
