UPDATED: 2:45 pm PDT August 14, 2007
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Peoria police said they believe a fatal accident was caused by a teenager who was text messaging on her cell phone and let her car drift into oncoming traffic.
Ashley Miller, 18, was driving a white Ford pickup that crossed the center line of Lake Pleasant Parkway on Monday afternoon, colliding head-on with a silver Dodge PT Cruiser.
The driver of the Dodge, 40-year-old Stacey Stubbs, of Chino Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Miller was ejected from her pickup and flown to a Valley hospital in critical condition. She later died.
Investigators believe the Glendale teen was text messaging on her cell phone when the wreck occurred.

Texting to blame for crash that killed 5 teens?
Messages sent, received on 17-year-old driver's phone just before collision
Updated: 4:18 p.m. PT July 14, 2007
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Text messages were sent and received on a 17-year-old driver’s cell phone moments before the sport utility vehicle slammed head-on into a truck, killing her and four other recent high school graduates, police said.
Bailey Goodman was driving her friends to her parents’ vacation home when her SUV, which had just passed a car, swerved back into oncoming traffic, hit a tractor-trailer and burst into flames. Five days earlier, the five teenagers had graduated together from high school in Fairport, a Rochester suburb.

Earlier this week, we were in the field at work. A teenager drove by us- with her ELBOWS on the steering wheel so she could hold her cell phone up and text!! My field partner yelled at her to throw down her phone and drive. She didn't. She just kept right on going........

I know. They think they're invincible. I don't even like talking on my cell when I'm driving, I can't imagine what it would be like to text.
I certainly hope the cell phone company's will consider starting some sort of an awareness campaign to warn of the dangers.
