Four College Students Shot Execution-Style in Newark, N.J.
Four College Students Shot Execution-Style in Newark, N.J.
Monday, August 06, 2007
NEWARK, N.J. — Three friends were forced to kneel against a wall behind an elementary school and were shot to death at close range, and a fourth was found about 30 feet away with gunshot and knife wounds to her head, police said.
Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's office, said Monday no arrests had been made and authorities had not identified suspects. Mayor Cory A. Booker was scheduled to hold a news conference at 1:30 p.m.
None of the victims had criminal records, authorities said.
"They were good kids," Essex County Prosecutor Paul Dow said.
The four had been listening to music in a parking lot behind Mount Vernon School when they were gradually joined by a group of men, authorities said.
Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy said the four exchanged text messages indicating they sensed trouble and believed they should leave, but were attacked before they could do so.

Official: Security Cameras Damaged Near Site of Newark Slayings
Wednesday, August 08, 2007
NEWARK, N.J. — Security cameras overlooking an elementary school courtyard where three college students were lined up and fatally shot Saturday night may have been tampered with in the 24 hours before the killings, a city official said.
Two cameras mounted high on the side of the Mount Vernon School were found hanging by their wires by technicians, according to Willie Freeman, director of security for the Newark school district.
Freeman said a school security guard who made a routine check of the building Friday night did not report anything wrong with the cameras.
The cameras are at least 12 feet above the ground, but one is within closer reach of the stairs that lead down to the wall where the victims were killed.

A week after the brutal slaying of three Newark, N.J., college students, the community is still in shock.
"I'm really petrified to even walk down the street," said Brianna Jolley, a friend of one of the victims.
Dashon Harvey was just 20 years old. The psychology major at Delaware State University was an aspiring model and described as fun-loving and respectful.
"I couldn't believe it, not my boy," said Harvey's father, James, recalling the night his son was killed. "Why? For what? Who did it? Why would they want to do that? I can't fathom that. I can't believe that," he said.
"[I've] got to buy him a suit for burial instead of his graduation and that's a shock to me."
Harvey and his friends Terrance Aerial, 18, and Iofemi Hightower, 20, were forced to kneel down and were shot execution style at a school playground. Aerial's sister Natasha, 19, was shot and stabbed, but survived the attack.

Sixth Suspect Nabbed in Execution-Style Newark Slayings
Sunday, August 19, 2007
TRENTON — Police have arrested a sixth suspect in the Aug. 4 killings of three college students, authorities said.
The 18-year-old suspect, Melvin Jovel, was charged Saturday night and apprehended in Elizabeth early Sunday morning, Essex County First Assistant Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said.
About 10 officers from the Newark police department, Essex County Prosecutor's office and Immigration and Customs Enforcement made the arrest at about 3 a.m., prosecutors said.
Jovel is charged with murder stemming from the execution-style slayings of Terrance Aeriel, 18; Dashon Harvey, 20, and Iofemi Hightower, 20. Aeriel's sister, Natasha, was shot in the head but survived and has helped police in the investigation.
Bail was set at $2 million by state Superior Court Judge Michael Ravin.
Jovel's arrest occurred about 24 hours after federal authorities in the Washington, D.C. area arrested 24-year-old Nicaraguan immigrant Rodolfo Godinez and 16-year-old Alexander Alfaro, his stepbrother.

I did not realize there was a thread on this. I remember when this happened (I'm in NY so it was all over the local news). When I heard about this suspect being out on bail for child rape and being an illegal immigrant -- my husband and I talked about this -- why? I don't know if it is because I read this board too much or it just seems like more and more criminals are being set free and have no regard for life. Too many repeat offenders!!!!!! Just boils my blood!
