Crime Incident Literary Research

A murder and attempted murder were committed in late 1970 in Westchester County NY that was classic serial killer behavior, but fortunately the lone perpetrator was caught and convicted. As a police officer at the time, I was involved in the investigation and over the years have repeatedly considered writting a non-fiction account of the crime. It was one of the most bizzare crimes I have ever investigated or even seen recounted on TV or in film.

Since I am no longer in law enforcement and do not have direct access to the invetsigative reports, I am interested in learning how authors & independant screen writers get access to recorded facts for the sake of accuracy. I tried doing a search on the crimelibrary message board, but didn't find anything. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
