NOTHING excuses a person of murdering their family
Chris Benoit, steroids or not, is, in my opinion, no any better than Andrea Yates for killing his family. Roid rage is an excuse not a reason for killing. If drugs give you an excuse for killing than every drunk driver on the road who kills an another innocent driver should be felt sorry for and not condemned for his actions. Drugs are drugs no matter how you cut it. Killing your family is killing your family and Chris Benoit should not be felt sorry, for his wife and his child, his seven year old child (!) which he smothered should be felt sorry for.

I'm not defending Benoit.
I was just posting an article which clarifies Roid Rage, for those who aren't familiar with the term.

The best thing that can come from a tragedy of this magnitude would be for steroid use among wrestlers to be investigated on a large scale. Several former wrestlers have come out and talked about the steroid abuse that goes on in wrestling since the Benoit family died. I'm in no way saying that steroids were a contributing reason for this horrible tragedy, but a steroid investigation would certainly be a good outcome. Something about this tragedy needs to be turned into something positive, and it sure isn't easy to think of any positive things that might apply. Every time I think of that little boy being strangled by his father, it makes me weak in the knees all over again.

I found this on-line last night-
Benoit Case Uncovers a Lack Of Understanding of Steroids
By Tim Marchman
June 28, 2007
This past weekend, Chris Benoit, a 40-year-old professional wrestler working for World Wrestling Entertainment, killed his wife and 7-year-old son, and then hung himself. Impossibly, each lurid detail disclosed by the investigation has made the story more horrific than the bare facts would have it.
As the story has grown into what looks like a major scandal, one that could (and should) inspire congressional intervention in the sewer-like wrestling industry, a main focus has been on the possibility that Benoit killed his family in a drug-induced frenzy. Typically, a report on the Fox News Web site was headlined, "Wrestler Chris Benoit Double Murder-Suicide: Was It Roid Rage'?" Investigators have said that they found large amounts of steroids in the family's home and won't rule out steroid-induced psychosis as a reason for the murders; WWE reacted with a bizarre press release in which it claimed "it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts." More interesting were two other bits in the release, which stated that Benoit had passed a WWE-administered steroid test in April, and that all steroids in Benoit's house were believed to have been obtained via legal prescriptions.
Both of these last two points are doubtless true, and of the highest relevance for baseball far more relevant, actually, than the fact that, according to the Albany district attorney's office, Benoit was a client of the same Florida company that also supplied ballplayers like Gary Matthews Jr. These facts show, on the one hand, how fraudulent a drug-testing program can be; and by offering a point of contrast to baseball's drug policy, they show how rigorous that policy really is. That people aren't aware of this shows how bad a job baseball has done of letting people know how serious its efforts have been to clean up the game.
WWE instituted its drug testing program in the aftermath of the 2005 death of Eddie Guerrero, who was just one among dozens of wrestlers who have died at age 45 or younger in the last decade, of causes related to long-term abuse of steroids and prescription medications. It's a shamefully inadequate policy. According to documents to be found on the company's Web site, for instance, "A Testosterone/Epitestosterone (T/E) ratio of four (4) or less shall be regarded as a negative test result." Without going into eye-glazing detail, T/E ratio is the chemical clue steroid tests are often actually used to find. A normal ratio is 1-to-1; baseball, following World Anti-Doping Agency standards, considers 4-to-1 a failure.
Many people think that baseball's drug testing policy is a transparent public relations ploy. It truly isn't. Determined athletes can beat it, but it's close to state of the art independently administered, adhering to the anti-doping agency's protocols on technical matters like proscribed substances and T/E ratios, and by all accounts intolerant of quack prescriptions. WWE, on the other hand, not only counts athletes with hugely elevated testosterone ratios as clean, but allows them to use whatever drugs they can lay their hands on so long as they can get some doctor somewhere to write a prescription. That's not a policy, it's a fig leaf.
Baseball has to start doing a better job of educating the public about steroids, because no one else is going to do it. Right now, many people believe that steroids drove Benoit to strangle his own child a belief so self-evidently simplistic and ridiculous that it allows WWE to point to its pathetic drug policy and ignore the real issues at play, which involve not only Benoit's own private demons, but a brutal, dehumanizing schedule, work that requires a level of physical punishment the body just can't handle, drug abuse as a near condition of employment, and a string of dozens and dozens of deaths about which no one has cared.
This is a problem for baseball because it shows how deep the ignorance about steroids runs. If people truly find it plausible that someone can murder his own family simply because of an injection of Winstrol, there's no reason to expect them to know or care that baseball's stance on T/E ratios and unannounced specimen collection shows the sport to be profoundly serious about doing its best to eliminate drug abuse from baseball.
People believe the mechanistic explanation, though, because they're ignorant about steroids and indifferent to the issue's complexities. And who can blame them, when those with the greatest interest in dispelling ignorance refuse to do so?
Baseball has every right to unapologetically point out that no matter how deep the steroid crisis in the game is, it has only affected competition something that's not the case in, say, bodybuilding, prowrestling, and even football, which have seen violence, suicide, mental illness and all sorts of early deaths connected to steroid use. Baseball also has every right to point with pride to a comprehensive drug testing policy that's better than that found in any other major team sport. Instead, baseball threatens to suspend Jason Giambi unless he cooperates with the sad, impotent investigation helmed by Senator Mitchell. This is anti-publicity. It's time for baseball to stop playing into the hands of the hysterics.

Thank you, sj13, for providing us with that link. It is much appreciated, and I feel that more people should read this article. I am not defending Chris Benoit either, but, when you look at the list of all the other drugs that he was taking, along with the steroids, he was a loose cannon. I might add, a very dangerous one, at that. IMO

Yes-that was exactly my point in adding the link...it wasn't to defend Chris, but to point out that there is a legitimate problem with steroids, and also to point out that there may also have been other pre-existing conditions that Chris or his doctors may not even have been aware of, which would have exacerbated the Roid Rage, such as a psychiatric issue he didn't know he had, or brain damage from concussions which weren't obvious to medical personnel.
You can't have your skull beaten in on a regular basis without sustaining SOME SORT of damage to the brain. A damaged brain is going to act even more erratically than a normal brain, when mixed with chemicals like anabolic steriods.
He MAY NOT have been ENTIRELY responsible for all of his actions...and I'm sure if he had any idea that steroids would cause him to do harm to his family, he wouldn't have taken them in the first place.

Exactly! Vince McMahon has the audacity to call Chris Benoit a monster. He is the last man who should call anyone that name. He is the one who encourages his wrestlers to look a certain way, with all that body mass & muscle! Take a look at Vince McMahon's physique. Do you think, for one moment, that a man his age can look that way naturally? Not a chance. I'll bet he wouldn't pass a test for steroid use. The man uses his wrestlers, and exploits them for his financial gain. Now he is trying to cover his behind yet again, because of steroids! Steroids have also been known to cause brain tumors. People need to know this, because if Chris Benoit was a "monster", Vince McMahon helped to make him that way. IMO

Speaking of brain tumors and steroids, I hope the toxicology and/or autopsy reports indicate some kind of brain tumor in Benoit. It would go a long way towards explaining how a man who everyone said loved his son so much could do what he did. I doubt things will get wrapped up in such a neat little bow, but it would be nice to have something that would help explain this horrible tragedy.

I agree with you. That would be somewhat helpful, and maybe even a little bit comforting too. IMO

"Steroids have also been known to cause brain tumors. "
Lyle Alzado died of brain cancer-a result of steroid use from his pro football days.

I read about him years ago, and remember that he used steroids. He openly admitted to using them, and even said how sorry he was that he did. It cost him his life. Steroids used in combination with various other drugs, such as pain killers are deadly. I am not defending or excusing Chris for his actions, I am saying, however, that this whole situation is very tragic. Chris's wife knew that he was taking steroids, and the other drugs too. She should have left him when she filed for divorce in 2003. She should not have agreed to having her child injected with HGH either, in my opinion. She had no idea what that would or could do to her child. Chris's first wife, and children are alive and well today because his first wife knew enough to divorce him. She saved her life, and that of her children. IMO

I completely agree with you. I look at little Daniel's picture, and I feel so very, very sad. He was such a darling little boy. How ironic that, he looked just like his Dad, the man he adored, and the man who killed him. This whole thing is just so incredibly sad. IMO

Response to Nightwatcher
So, because Chris Benoit's wife, Nancy did not leave/divorce him in 2003 and allowed their son Daniel to be injected with HGH (another drug I might add), somehow she is responsible for her own death and that of her son? Am I right? I am very confused. I am new to this type of thing as you can see, however, I was a fan of WCW for years and WWE for years and loved Benoit and still cannot see where she could be responsible in anyway for another person's sick, deluded, and from what all others are saying, drug induced actions?

There is no need to be so aggressive with me. I am saying that she had no business allowing her son to be injected with HGH. She had no idea what that would do to him. I also said that if she had divorced him in 2003, and moved somewhere far away from him, she & her son would still be alive. An excellent example of that, would be Chris's first wife & children. I am not looking for an argument, I am expressing my opinion; just as you are with yours.

I understand...my ex-husband used to knock me around.
And we still don't know where Daniel's HGH script came from. It may have been prescribed by HIS pediatrician or a specialist.
It may have been for his small stature, but many kids with autism also have digestive problems, and this kind of drug is also used to treat inadequate absorption of nutrients due to "short bowel syndrome" which is an intestinal problem.
So we can't just assume that Chris had an obsession with Daniel's short stature, and gave him HGH to make him larger.

In fact, now that I think about it, one of the guys I used to go out with has an autistic son.
He has to be in his early 20's now, but his dad used to tell me about how crazy his diet was-macaroni and cheese for the most part-no veggies, and very few meats. He ended up having gall stones removed during his early teens. I guess it's very common for autisitic kids to have digestive problems. They don't react well to ANY change-especially in their diet, so they have a LOT of deficiencies, and they seem to pick one TYPE of food-usually carbs and dairy for some reason, and won't eat much of anything else. They end up with "leaky gut syndrome"-not too familiar with that one-and ulcers, etc.
So this could be a very legitimate reason for the Human Growth Hormone to be given to Chris's son.

That's ok, I understand because I've been through the situation of dealing with abuse too. It's a terrible thing to have to deal with or experience. This whole thing is extremely tragic. It's even more so, because I think it could have been prevented. IMO

Too many pro wrestlers dying young
Deaths of Benoit, family shed light at disturbing trend in wrestling
A very good article, but it's 4 pages, and too long to post, according to the message board.
A MUST READ!!!! Several wrestlers speak up about the many wrestlers' deaths, and how it's affecting them.

update found in The Australian newspaper

Australia link to wrestler murders
AN Australian link has emerged in the mystery of who altered pro wrestler Chris Benoit's Wikipedia entry to mention his wife's death - hours before authorities discovered the bodies of the couple and their son.
Benoit strangled his wife and seven-year-old son last weekend, placing Bibles next to their bodies, before hanging himself on the cable of a weight-machine in his home, authorities said.
Police found the bodies in the wrestler's suburban Atlanta home on Monday afternoon.
Investigators are looking into the alteration of Benoit's Wikipedia entry early on Monday morning to say that the wrestler had missed a match two days earlier because of his wife's death.
The anonymous edits, one in Australia, were made up to 14 hours before police said they found the wrestler and his family dead, said Wikipedia, a reference site that allows users to add and edit information.
A Wikipedia official, Cary Bass, said the first entry was made by someone using an internet protocol address registered in Stamford, Connecticut, where World Wrestling Entertainment is based.
It told of Benoit missing a wrestling match on Saturday night "stemming from the death of his wife Nancy".
Wikipedia editors quickly removed the reference, saying there was no reliable source. It is not known where the posting was sent from.
But about an hour later another anonymous entry was made using a wireless internet provider in Australia, Wikipedia's news site Wikinews said.
The entry also referred to the "passing" of Benoit's wife, but was removed 20 minutes later, again because of doubts about its accuracy.
"It didn't become apparent until someone put the pieces together and realised that the comment was made by someone who apparently knew about the murders," Bass told Wikinews.
Wikipedia said it had been unable to conclude whether the anonymous editors had inside information about the death of Nancy Benoit.
No motive was offered for the killings.

Hi, shar! Thanks for providing us with that article. It's so good to see you here!
Yes, the whole thing is really very, very strange. I hope that we'll be able to find out what really happened in that house, and why. My heart, thoughts & prayers go out to the Benoit family.
