Question Does anyone know this case?

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I'm trying to find out more about a case involving a group of young teenaged girls (I think there were 3 or 4?) who murdered their friend. It happened, I think, in the late 80's/early 90's or thereabouts. The only other details i can remember is that the girls (her 'friends') beat her to death near a lake or beach and covered her body with the trunk of a fallen tree.

I have read the Shanda Sharer case and it brought the above to mind because of the obvious similarities eg teenaged girls, jealousy etc. As I recall, although the murder in this case happened in a matter of moments, it was based on out-of-control jealousy all the same.

I hope somebody may be able to give me some info so that I can locate a book about the above case and find out more about it. Thanks.

It may be Michelle Avila who was murdered very much like you describe. There is a book about her called "Missy's Murder" and a movie with Patty Duke based on the murder. I think it was called "A Killer Among Friends."

Isn't that the case that the ringleader of the murder brigade befriended the mom (patty duke in the movie)??

Yes, unimaginable huh. How shocking that must have been when it came out. I haven't read the book yet.

It sounds very similuar to a lot of lifetime movies... Most of which are based on facts. I'll do some hunting but I do recall this.

Thumbs up Thanks

Hi, I've just done some searching on the net using the details Packy mentions and it is the case I was trying to find out about so many thanks to you all, esp. Packy! I don't think I would have been able to narrow it down with the few details I had. Now I can get hold of a copy of the book.

Reading Tommy Odle

Does anyone know anything about the Odle family that was murdered by Tommy Odle? He killed his brother and sister and his parents in Mount Vernon,IL they lived on 23rd street house has been torn down he is stlll in prison but have not been able to find any informaton on the case or trail it happened around 1980 to 1985 not sure when he got life without any possibality of getting out ever. I've heard lots of gossip but never any facts on the case never seen it on court tv and can't find anything in the crime library about it. Would like to hear the real story on what happened and why there isn't any information on what happened.

There are two cases I would like to research. I was rather young at the time the first one happened and I cant even remember the boy's name but anyway it was in Lee County Georgia and he murdered his mother and his little 2-3 year old sister. I think they tried him as an adult even though he was around 13-14 at the time.1980ish maybe I would like to know if he is out now or still in prison.

Also in the adjoining county, Dougherty County Georgia the Ranew family was murdered as they slept in their bed (probably in the 80s). It was their son and he tried to kill his sister too. She had locked herself in her bedroom and he broke it down. He shot her and tried to molest her. She almost died from her wound. He was around 16 years old and it was because he was doing drugs and his family had cut his money supply off trying to keep him off of drugs. I think he got life but not sure it was LWOP.

I would like to know if either one of them are out by now and refresh my memory on their cases.

I tried to find something but not much luck. This short excerpt from a list of death row prisoners in 1990 gave his supposed reason for killing them. You may have already seen this.

http://www.soci.niu.edu/~critcrim/dp/dpill/dp90

"Thomas Odle, 23. Stabbed his father, mother, two brothers and a
sister to death Nov. 8, 1985, in Mt. Vernon. Odle told police that he was
tired of his parents ``comin` down on my case`` about alcohol and drug abuse."

This person said they wrote a song about Tommy. It seemed like maybe he lived in the same town but not sure. Maybe get in touch with him.

Dunno if this is what your looking for Jaded, but I found this;

Carl J. ISAACS, born about 1954, was sentenced to death for the May 1973 killings of seven members of the Alday family in Seminole County, Georgia. He was finally executed by way of lethal injection 6 May 2003, after 30 years on death row. The crime was one of the most heinous in Georgia's history. Books have been written and movies have been made about it. Two titles are Brothers in Blood: A True Account of the Georgia Massacre and Blood Echoes: The Infamous Alday Mass Murder Case and its Aftermath.

I'll keep looking

Oh my what terrible memories. I saw the poor Alday Family listed. It was one of the worst crimes ever in Georgia. Took the State 30 years to execute Carl Issac and his gang brutally killed 6 innocent people just because he could.

I will never forget these murders for as long as I shall live. Back then life was easy and laid back and things this heinous just didn't happen and not to God fearing people who were loved deeply in their community. They were the salt of the Earth. Farmers and great farmers they were ...diligently working their large farm. They worked the fields everyday but come Sunday morning they all were sitting there as a family giving God His day.

I was married to my ex at the time. He and a three more buddies went fishing at a pond close by where the Alday home sat. They fished, then played some cards that night in the camper and went to sleep as they had planned to fish the next day too. The camper was parked alone and in a wooded area.

My ex said around 2 am in the morning one of the guys woke up and said he heard someone messing around outside. They listened and it seem whomever it was ......was trying to steal the truck and trying to unhook the camper but they had secured the hitch with a lock. They had no weapon so they just stayed quiet. Someone juggled the camper door but finding it locked finally moved on. Unnerved they dismissed it thinking it was probably some kids looking for a joyride.

Then the Alday family was found and for awhile it was surreal and we live about 60 miles from Donalsonville but the news spread lightning fast, it made National News. When they were captured most of us didn't know if they would live to see daylight. All sorts of threats to storm the jail and drag them out in the street and hang them all right there. I have never seen another reaction like this in my state before or since.

Anyway before my ex left to come back they went to the Sheriff's department there and told them about someone trying to get in the camper and trying to steal the truck. The Issac gang had already admitted that they were the ones that had been there. They were trying to get a different vehicle because they were being hunted for another murder in another state and also were looking for a place to lay low. So by the Grace of God there wasn't more victims in their path of destruction. My ex never went back to Donalsonville to fish anymore. He had met the father, Ned, a few times before he was killed.

It is so sad to go to the little country church and see all six graves lined up one by one. If we are going to the beach we go that way and always stop and say a little prayer for such precious life lost to such evil.

imo

I remember the Alday murders real well too. How sad and tragic. I thought of how many times I'd come home and there'd be strange people hanging in our garage talking race cars etc., and I just went in as if there was no worry. After that case I started getting a little paranoid when a bunch of guys came over unless they were long-time friends.

Jaded, I tried to look for anything on the Ranew case but not much luck. Got some weird sites listed with that name too. Tried so many different combinations of words with and without the name.

Thank you so much for trying to locate it. I think now I remember the father who was murdered was C.D. Ranew. Dont know why but that name came back to me this morning. He owned a successful construction company IIRC. Ironically when they were killed the sole daughter that was left living inherited their Estate and sold off tracts of land that he had for housing subdivisions and we bought 25 of those acres.

Strange the small connections sometimes.

Tommy Odle

That kid killed his entire family in Mt Vernon, Illinois in 1985. He brutally stabbed and strangled five and then acted as if nothing happened. The community was never the same after this. I think I still have old newspaper articles if you are interested. The story is haunting.
