Fake cop indicted on rape, sodomy charges

The Holbrook man accused of impersonating a police officer -- including having his own "precinct" in Hempstead -- is facing "chilling" new charges that he used the guise to sexually assault female and male victims, including a 15 year old boy, and also sadistically tortured and killed animals at his home, Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota said Monday.

A new 54-count grand jury indictment unsealed Monday in a Riverhead courtroom charges Henry Terry with a host of new crimes, including first-degree rape and sodomy. Suffolk County Court Judge C. Randall Hinrichs called the new charges serious and ordered Terry held without bail.

If convicted, Terry faces a maximum of 132 years in prison, prosecutors said.

Terry, who lived in various places in Suffolk County, was accosting people as a police officer since at least 2005, prosecutors said. He had an authentic-looking uniform, a car with lights and sirens and a pair of handcuffs. He even had an office in neighboring Nassau County that served as an unofficial "police station," although no charges are pending against him there.

I really wish the legitimate police would not use unmarked cars to pull someone over. This is getting very dangerous as you hear stories like this all too often. I so worry about my 21 year old and 17 year old who both drive and would never think to ask someone identifying themselves as a PO for ID. And then I've heard stories where legitimate POs have been asked for their IDs and some get upset that you've asked them for IDs.

I thought this could also open up discussion on 'how do you protect yourself" especially when stopped by an unmarked car?

OMG! What a horrible story! I would never pull over for an unmarked car just anywhere! I would make sure it was well lit and lots of people were around! And, if it really creeped me out I would call the police. But, I know that I can say that but you never know how someone handles pressure. So sad!
