PR: Operation Protect Our Children

Hendersonville North Carolina

Release: Immediate Contact: Joe Johnson
Date: March 15, 2007 Phone: 828-694-2718

Hendersonville – This Henderson County Sheriff’s Office will kick-off Operation Protect Our Children on Friday, March 16. This is the first installment of what will become a random, periodic and frequent initiative in Henderson County. Several deputies from the Sheriff’s Office will work Friday, Saturday and Sunday to update the photos and verify the addresses of all registered sex offenders that reside in Henderson County.

Currently, there are 87 documented sex offenders assigned to Henderson County. Of these, 69 are actually residing within the general population of Henderson County. The remaining 18 identified sex offenders are housed in either the North Carolina Department of Corrections or the Henderson County Detention Center.

New legislation which passed through the General Assembly and went into effect on December 1, 2006 gives the authority to the Sheriff’s Office to update photos and physically verify addresses of all registered sex offenders. The majority of registered sex offenders in Henderson County have committed crimes against children and it is imperative that we continually do things to guard the safety of our children.

Sheriff Rick Davis states it this way, “I have children and it is of the highest level of importance to me that all of the children of Henderson County are safe. I know that some people might say this process is intrusive. If registered sex offenders are going to choose to live in Henderson County they are going to have to like this process, deal with this process or move – bottom line. The safety of the people of Henderson County can never take a backseat to what a few might think

I wish they would do this all over the world it would be a better place for our children. IMO all sex offenders should be kept in prison and put in with the genereal population and let them take of them !! JMO
