Reading Private Messaging - Confidentiality

When a PM is forwarded or received to/by another poster are the Moderators able to read the message behind the screen? TIA.

PM Tracking

I have not been able to figure out how to track my PMs Sent like on the old CTV board. Can someone explain how to do this on this new Forum? TIA.

Go to the top right where it says Welcome .....
Underlined is Private Messages - click
It will take you to your private messages and you can select to read, track or whatever.

I hope that helps. I'm getting used to it myself.

Give it a go

Thanks, Frogster. I tried what you said but I find no place that gives me the option to "track." When I do the "Track" messages on the left side, it says it is empty, and I know it is not. The only other thing I see is a "Jump Folder" option and that only allows me to see "Inbox" and "Sent" box.

I'm

According to Coldwater many, many months (years) ago, she said that the Moderators cannot see your PM's; that they would have to have your password in order to do so. Whether that's changed or not, I have the foggiest, Frogster! LOL!

Question Pm

How can a person send a PM and then not receive an answer back? I tried to respond to the one and only I've ever gotten and it said the person couldn't receive PM's.

This means they have their PM option turned off. Although this persons pm option is off they can still send a message to you.

I normally read the rules here but don't comment. This time I would like to say something that I think is important.

FWIW, never post anything on the Internet, either public or private, that you don't want the whole world to see. At the very worst, a court order can compel your posts and e-mails to be made available to the court if warranted. At the very least, you could be embarrassed if someone you trusted turned out to be someone you can't trust.

Good Morning FW!

But can members forward PMs they have received to you or others?

Frankly I have never used the forwarding feature as I think PMs should not be sent to any other person when the PM was not sent to them in the first place.

And I have been sent some pretty nasty and threatening PMs a few times. lol Thank goodness it isnt very often.

Thanks.

That is so true and it is stressed that what we say we own and it is our full responsibility. We cant say something thinking we can back away from it. I have always thought there are some that need to sincerely think about who they may be accusing of something. It still happens even after there has been convictions and posters still call yada, xxxxxx, yada a murderer. More and more these civil lawyers are including message board posters etc and the internet in their cases.

Having an opinion we are entitled but outright calling someone a murderer without any proof is a very dangerous and precarious thing to do imo.

imo

yes they can be forwarded but also be careful with whom you communicate on the web. there have been some recent cases where members have sent me PMs that are so vile and disgusting that i believe receiving them is an emotional assault. I am now developing additions to our house rules for clarification of existing rules but to also begin to address these abuses. It saddens me greatly that there are those here who are capable of such behaviors. They don't belong in our community but it can be hard to prevent their abuses of our pM and rep systems. SO...I suggest you do not forward private information unless it is threatening or abusive.
Thank you FW and I will continue to follow your instructions. Even if I receive a nice PM which thankfully I do often I never forward that confidential message to another poster but if I do receive a threatening one I will forward it to you.

I agree. It is abusive behavior and used as mental torture (sigh) most of the time simply because a poster may disagree with their opinions. Talk about issues! lol I won't even go there.

Freshwater, should we forward the vile PM to you when it's received. I truly don't know what toilet some of these people have their heads stuck in, but they are truly vile. And if you get rid of one of them, they come back under another hat. They're like cockroaches. I've never seen anything like it.

vB Version: 3.5.0

What does this do?

This allows a super admin to read the private messages (all folders) from any registered member through the admin control panel.

This was really the first hack for version 3 of vBulletin, and now upgraded to 3.5

I would also like to add that a pm recieved can be edited to say other things and mass pm'd to others to get a member ban'd. I was the unfortunate victim of this and as expected Freshwater did allow me to explain my side and it was true and very quickly taken care of by Freshwater.
So, thank you Freshwater for taking the time to find out my side rather than just dismissing me as another moderater on a fellow board never bothers doing. Great job!

My suggestion is that you don't post information in a PM that you don't want forwarded. It's simple- keep your private information to yourself or exchange emails.

FW has better things to do than read PM's. She gets about 100 or so reported posts a day, for starters.

Well said TD,

I have not been here as long as many others here, but I TOTALLY TRUST FW. FW helped me with a serious problem once and I have nothing but respect for what ever actions FW feels needs to be taken at any given time.
This community is huge and if you look at all the announcements, threads, post,pm's and reported post that FW has to do you can see FW has I my mine not enough time to read our personal pm's.
I do not understand why this is such a big deal. We are here not just to pm each other there are serious cases here for us to be working on.

FW I TRUST YOU TOTALLY

I argued strongly that the integrity of the community as a whole would depend in part on how I behaved. By rule there are no hacks in the software. I can't read pms, can only track IP to the portal (LE for example can track to the street level), do not have direct access to e-mail accounts (e-mail addys are routed through a nic converter to protect each members' real world ID). I do not have global ignore capacities (that function is mean and cowardly), bans are automatically generated when points are reached and the list goes on and on.... Just becasue SPAFS knows alot about the software s/he doesn't know alot about me and what it is I am here to achieve. Bottom line I DO NOT READ PMs . I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR PERSONAL PMs. IT IS UNETHICAL FOR ANY ADMINISTRATOR TO READ PRIVATE MESSAGES. IF you feel you are being targeted for abuse via the PM system - forward the e-mail to me and I will investigate. I allow the accused abusing member to respond then take into consideration each members' entire history within the community before any action is taken. I would hope as time moves on that the membership would come to judge me by my actions. I would hope that my personal integrity and the integrity of this community would become universally known. Until that happens I guess I willl continue to repeat the same information. I DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR PMs.

Freshwater
I never made any claim of what you do with the software. I made no statements about you at all!

I simply presented what the vendor shows is available. That fact made absolutely NO statement of you, your use of the software, any ethical questions nor attacked or presented anything in relation to your integrity.
I do not need to know you to present vendor information on software which was the question I addressed and I addressed nothing more!

I agree. I think FW and Riviera are awesome moderators. Personally, I would never feel comfortable forwarding another's private PM to another. If for some reason I wanted to, I would ask the sender if it was okay, but that's never happened.

I've never received threatening PM's, actually I've received many kind ones from people that oppose opinions with me, so thus far, no issues with PM function on my end.

Alot of times I think the PM function helps to talk things out, outside a forum thread on a more personal level. It's a good thing, I think.

FWIW, never post anything on the Internet, either public or private, that you don't want the whole world to see. At the very worst, a court order can compel your posts and e-mails to be made available to the court if warranted. At the very least, you could be embarrassed if someone you trusted turned out to be someone you can't trust.

Hiya, Melungeon.

(Interesting pseud. I've read a little about Melungeons on DNA sites.)

Agree that all PMs are available. Odd that a moderator would think the message board software would have an impenetrable LOCK on some aspects.

Question

Does anybody know if we can start a new thread on the Mary Winkler case or have posters' behaviors ruined that option?

Thumbs up

Hiya, Happy!

I think you could open a Mary Winkler thread in the Women Who Kill area. There's a New Thread option.

(Judging by the few posts on Crime Library, I think the whole board will disappear soon.)

Thanks Mother. I knew you would know. It does appear its "days are numbered."
