No no Showtime's "Dexter"

The new show called "Dexter" that will soon air on Showtime, from what I have seen on the previews & what I have read online, sound a lot like the typical Hollyweird, *cough *cough, I mean Hollywood crew trying to make serial killers seem smart, & have some good qualities such as helping police solve crimes. When in fact a lot of it is NOT true. Also, can you imagine what families of victims think about a show that glorifies a serial killer as a "hero"? If anything this show will attract psychopathic serial killers, or serial killer wanna be's, or serial killers who don't have the gall to carry out their sick thoughts, or just freaky creepy teenagers & the 30 yr olds living in their mom's basement.

Here is what is wrong with the show: serial killers are NOT as smart as Hollywood would like to make them out to be. They could care less about helping police solve crimes. And Hollywood is yet again glorifying another serial killer.

Regardless of what people say about Ted Bundy he was NOT smart. It was the people around him & the investigators who were not smart enough to realize that he was the prep. It just makes a better story (& good press for the investigators) if the serial killer (Like Bundy) is made out to be smart. Bundy would drive a *gold* Volkswagen to a lake & approach some ladies with a pickup line “my name is Ted”. How smart! He uses his REAL name, & drives a gold car & does this in DAYLIGHT in a crowd full of people. (Yeah, wonder if he is a natural blonde?) His girlfriend (Who is about as smart as he is) has a light bulb go off in her head after watching the news & thinks: “Hey that sounds like my boyfriend!” (DUH!) He also gets pulled over by a cop for speeding. The cop didn’t even know who he was until he found the serial killer kit in the back seat! Which Bundy could have said NO, you cannot search without a search warrant, but Bundy consented! He is a smart one hu? So if he is what people call “the most clever serial killer” than that proves most serial killers are idiots. So that proves Hannibal Lector wasn’t inspired by Bundy.

Serial Killers are far from “heroes” like “Dexter” & “Silence of the Lambs” would like to make you think they are. They would NEVER help police find another serial killer. They want as many serial killers to be around, because they love to share ideas with each other, know they are not alone in their sick thoughts, & want the police to focus on this serial killer instead of them. The only time serial killers would help police is if they have already been caught & they could get an offer of some sort. Plus they want to hear about gruesome crimes, it turns them on. Again it is all about them, they are psychopaths.

Can you imagine what a TV show like “Dexter” makes families of victims who have been murdered by serial killers feel? To see serial killers glorified, & seen as a hero? It must make them sick. I mean how would you like it, if a member of your family member was murdered by some sick psychopath, & then a TV show glorifies them. Probably pissed off.

If Showtime had any decency they would refuse to air the show because of falsehoods that people will believe about serial killers, because serial killers do not deserve to be glorified, it boosts their ego, & the pain it causes the families of victims who have been murdered by serial killers.

But do you really expect Hollywood not to glorify evil & give an accurate portrayal of serial killers?

I ordered Showtime just for this show. I am starting courses in Criminology this Spring. I have watched this show and love it. It may be a bad show in telling people that serial killers are glorious and noteworthy people. But I have to tell you, that is why they are serial killers. They want to be glorified and eventually found. That is a part of their thrill. We as people glorify them. We make them famous.

It goes to show that some people are believed to be born with the serial killer gene. Unfortunately I take it he was. But his adopted dad helped him to control his urges. Into something better than just killing humans. I'm not saying what he does is okay. By far it is not. It is just a show. So keep it that way.

Thumbs up Starting 3rd season

What does everyone think?

I think it is a great show.
The writing is brilliant, the characters are interesting and complex. Multiple back stories that you actually care about.
I love this show.
I don't even have showtime, but I borrow my friend's dvds (he is addicted and buys the series as soon as they come out) who was a big fan of the (comic ?) book it was based on.

I voted no only because I saw the first few episodes and just couldn't get 'hooked'. I don't get a lot of TV time and barely have enough for the shows I'm addicted to.

That said, I think it is a show meant to shock and push the limits: as are most of the shows coming out on networks where they won't be censored. I usually watch shows on HBO (Rome) and Showtime (The Tudors) for that reason: to have the story told without limits.

Yes, there are people who might watch this and get sick ideas but then there are people who are searching for sick ideas anywhere. Someone who wants to hurt or kill people probably doesn't need much in the way of inspiration. After all, Ted Bundy blamed pornography for his crimes. I know a lot of men who look at pornography who are not murderers, rapists or pedophiles.

It's just a show, and an entertaining one. I don't think Showtime's intent is to glorify serial killers because anyone who watches the show knows that Dexter only preys on other murders/serial killers who get away from the law. Dexter is pretty much taking the law into his own hands, and by no means am I saying it's okay but we have to remember it's only fiction.

Talking Dexter

Great show, other than his sister who can't act. I have been watching the show since it has started and find I can't wait for the next one. A bit fluffy at times, but that is what makes it watchable and not real.

I think that the way she is acting is intentional. She plays an unsecure sister living behind the shadow of her 'perfect' brother who the father always favored. We'll see once the new season comes out. The one I couldn't stand was Sargeant Dokes. HE isn't a good actor.

You are probably right HeavenCries, but in my opinion she even does a poor job of that. She is so insecure she is unbelievable. Yes, you have my vote on Sareant Dokes too, however, it sounds like I am picking this program apart so why do I watch it???? I like it!

How did I miss this thread before?

Haven't seen Dexter on Showtime; but saw Season one on CBS and I love it. Yes, Dexter is likeable, but I don't think for a minute that the purpose of the show is to glorify serial killers in the least.

This is my epiphany to date: Most of us believe that serial killers have devolved into monsters, either by nature or nurture (or a combination). Dexter is the opposite. He was pegged by Harry early on as a serial killer, but he is evolving into a more caring, more in-touch (emotionally) human as time goes by.

I've read that the CBS version was edited quite a bit. I'm hoping to rent or buy Season two (and I guess S3 when it comes out); wonder if there is really a lot of difference in the cuts.

I'm sure it was edited quite a bit. You should rent season 1, and I won't say anything about Season 2 because I don't want to spoil it for you. All I'll say is that the actor makes Dexter very believeable and creepy!

I don't mind spoilers, but I know a lot of folks are spoiler free. There is a lot of information at the Dexter board at IMDb, so I've read ahead a little. Just figured out how to hook up my DVD player, so I'm set to see Season two! Hastings doesn't have it yet and I'd rather rent than buy.

You think I should watch Season one again unedited?
