New Crime Library story 7-1

July 1 (Crime Library) — Spokane TV station KXLY reported on June 30, 2006 that remains had been found by authorities searching for 19-year-old Jamie Lynn Drake. The remains were found in Addy, Washington (WA), beneath the floor of a cabin owned by Kevin Wayne Newland's mother. Authorities stated that Kevin Newland was the person who led them to the body.

Spokane police believe the deceased to be Jamie Lynn Drake.

Earlier this week, Kevin Wayne Newland, age 20, was arrested by Spokane police for possession of stolen property.

Well written article, Steve Huff

This was a well written article by Steve Huff - no big surprise there as all of his articles are well written. How sad - another beautiful young woman taken from this world too soon. Has anything further been released about this case?

Very Sad. Anyone know if Kevin Wayne Newland has been charged with anything other than the stolen car or have a history of criminal offences?

follow up - more information

Here is another article I discovered. There are a few, but mostly say the same thing. Nothing on priors for Newland. Reading his myspace account was sad as friends write in shocked and feeling betrayed.

Kevin Wayne Newland, 20, was arrested in Maple Valley on Tuesday evening for investigation of possessing stolen property. Authorities there also recovered Jamie Lynn Drake's 1993 Ford Mustang.

Deputies did not say how Newland was located, and Drake's disappearance remains under investigation.

Newland was a former boyfriend of Drake's female roommate. He had lived with the two women as recently as two months ago, Spokane County sheriff's deputies said.

You're welcome. I suppose going through his myspace account may turn up something, but judging from the reaction from the couple of posts after he was arrested, I think this was a shock to all. Isn't it always?

I agree with that. You just never know what people may be capable of or what's troubling them, etc. Open communication with friends and family just isn't like it used to be. So many people are troubled or depressed or suicidal, and ones around them don't even realize it. Scary thing when you think about it. And worse yet when innocent people have to pay the price.

Thanks for posting this. I find all of this sort of confusing. One would assume that if he knew where her body was, he was the one who put it there. I suppose that one of his friends did it and he just knew about it and never said anything. But it was in his family's home!

Amen to that, Make!

You're right "be" it is confusing. Are KWN's parents together? The body was found under his mothers house but he only says he visited his father and his sister or did I misread that?

I see KWN is now a murder suspect and not just for possession of stolen property (the mustang belonging to JLD)

current news?

Hi, Gypsy. I can't find any current news on this. Has he been officially charged? I did find this one article.

http://www.spokesmanreview.com/break...ry.asp?ID=6956

It states:
Quote:
ADDY, Wash. -- The search for a 19-year-old Mead woman ended Friday in rural Stevens County, where detectives apparently located the body of Jamie Lynn Drake under the floorboards of a tiny cabin.

The suspect, 20-year-old Kevin Wayne Newland, allegedly led detectives to the site in a late-night drive through the forested back roads northwest of Addy, Wash.

"They said, 'OK, why are we here?' He walked over and pulled open the hatch and walked away,'" said Sgt. Dave Reagan of the Spokane County Sheriff's Department.

The discovery of the body, wrapped in a blue plastic tarp, ended the statewide search for Drake, who disappeared on June 23. Reagan said detectives believe that Drake was killed at her apartment and her body moved to the cabin.

Drake's family released a statement on Friday thanking law enforcement for their work and urging families "to celebrate what they have."

"We should all be reminded that life is very precious and we should let all of those around us know how special they are to us," the family said.
It must be heartwrenching for these families. I can not imagine - nor would I want to imagine - going through this kind of pain.

Unhappy shaking my head

Probably a stupid question and one that I don't think there's really an answer for. Nor is it original by any means, I'm sure.

. . . but what possesses someone to take the life of another? I can understand in car accidents or, well, just that - accidents. I have never understood the intentional taking of someone's life. I would guess, in Jamie's case perhaps she said something that made him angry or something to that effect, but I don't understand the anger to that extreme. So that two families - hers and his - are devastated by this loss. Their friends and all who knew them. I find it mind boggling.

for Jamie, for the families, for the friends

I can't answer that question, I really don't know. It is very sad as you say for both families and friends.

I've found no further new updates, it seems to be left with the confession from Kevin and the autopsy findings as yet to be revealed.

Perhaps there will be nothing else until a trial. So many of these cases seem to disappear from the media eye and we don't find out the results.
