03/14/06) TRENTON – The New Jersey Parole Board hopes to expand its use of sophisticated GPS technology to keep tabs on sex offenders throughout the state.
Currently, the board tracks 28 offenders with a tamper-proof anklet and tracking pack. Both devices allow members of the parole board to precisely track the movement of convicted sex offenders with the click of a mouse. If board members notice something unusual or suspicious about an offender’s movements, police can be dispatched to investigate.
Red flags from one person’s movements led to police discovering the individual in bed with his girlfriend and her teenage daughter. Authorities say the main goal of the program is to stop convicted sex offenders before they can strike again. Members of the parole board hope to expand the pilot program to 250 offenders by this summer.
