Federal Legislation Re SORNA
I wrote to my State Senator (Brownback) and got this reply:
"Crimes against children, particularly those of a sexual nature, represent one of the most shocking and disturbing problems a nation faces today. Like you, I have read with great sadness and concern about the recent incidents of abuse and abduction that have affected families across the country.
On May 19, 2005, Senator Orrin Hatch introduced the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (S. 1086). This bill would establish a comprehensive national system that would strengthen existing sex offender registry laws. In particular, the Act would increase the supervision and parole requirements for convicted sex offenders, create mandatory minimum sentences for those convicted, and offer greater access to sex offender information for child welfare agencies.
A number of other bills pertaining to this issue have been put forward, including the Children's Safety Act of 2005 (H.R. 3132), introduced in the House by Congressman James Sensenbrenner on June 30, 2005. Rest assured that as the Senate's consideration of critical legislation pertaining to the protection of our children from sexual abuse proceeds, I will keep your comments in mind.
The government must do more to create a safe environment for our children. I am committed to working with fellow lawmakers in every way possible to make sure that we succeed in this endeavor."
