Origin of new surname Teale

Am I the only one who finds it disturbing that K uses the name of a fictional serial killer to start her new life? This is a name she and ex-hubby, rapist and murderer PB, selected together. Surely, someone else must realize that this is no accident and is some sort of a message.

I think its a message and I also think she would go back to Paul if she could. Otherwise she would drop the sick name. The fact EITHER of them would use that name shows they are sick puppies.

Nobody knows what she may or may not be doing with regard to her legal name. She used it in prison because she had little choice in the matter. She was charged and tried as "Karla Bernardo AKA Karla Teale" and given only those two choices by the prison system. As Stephen Williams wrote, "not surprisingly, she chose the name of a ficticious monster" rather than use Bernardo.

It was Homolka herself who told investigators where the inspiration for the name "Teale" came from. But for her statements, nobody would be any wiser. Stephen Williams wrote that "to Karla, it was the name of a colour she liked". Paul had always hated his surname. They coincidentally saw a Teale Coat of Arms in a gift shop I believe, and subsequently did research on the name at a library.

My point simply is that it seems to me that the significance of the name may be overanalysed. I can speak from some personal experience, because I got my son's names off some movie credits I had seen years before he was born. I remember nothing about the character, or even what movie it was, just that I liked the name.

While I agree that given the history it seems a grisly choice, who knows what it really means or doesn't mean to Homolka.

If you have the opportunity to change your life why not change a name that has multiple negative connotations. But on the other hand maybe you like those connotations and the name is always there to remind you!

I agree with that!! I don't think its over analyzing really at all. It's been in a LOT of articles about the Teale last name and why they had chose that. Being a victim of domestic violence myself, I can say as soon as my divorce was finalized, I kept NOTHING I had during my married time. I went back to my maiden name as well. I can't see her using that name, hearing it daily, her signing her name and not ever ONCE putting a connection on it as being a "horrible" time I would want to forget!! She could have chose any name!! But yet she chose to go with this one!! I honestly think she knew darn well what she was doing by keeping that last name!!

Again, we really don't know what Homokla's plans are for her legal name. Perhaps she didn't have the resources to pay for the change in prison. Perhaps it wasn't allowed. Perhaps it meant something entirely different to her. Perhaps a lot of other things other than she gets off having the same last name as a fictional killer.

Maybe we don't know her "actual" reasons for it, but it really isn't saying much for her keeping that name. IMO its pretty sick and twisted. Like I said she has to hear that name every day, sign that name, etc. Why keep something you claim not to want to be associated with??? IMO she really knew what she was doing in keeping that name.....

Please. Teale is the name of fictional serial killer whom K and PB chose to honor by using his name.

It doesn't wash that K didn't have the legal resources to change her name. It is a very simple matter to change one's name. Recently there was an article in the NY Times about the ease in which a name change can be facilitated.

As I suspected all a name change requires is a form.

Hi northernrflxn

I am curious if you know ...was Karla not allowed to change her name legally while in prison?

Thanxs GoatGirl

It is my understanding that there was absolutely nothing preventing Karla from changing her name while she was in prison. It has been done by others.

There was a bill proposed (2001) C-240 to ammend the Criminal Code to read:

727.1 (1) Where an offender is convicted of first degree murder, second degree murder or an offence under section 273 (aggravated sexual assault), the court that sentences the offender, in addition to any other punishment that may be imposed for that offence or any other condition prescribed in the order of discharge, shall make an order prohibiting the offender from changing his or her name by application under provincial law or informally by assuming another name.

It was debated and didn't get past first reading. It was not votable.

I have no idea - my point simply is that none of us has anywhere near enough information to come to any conclusions about any of this.

My point is we have plenty of information about the surname and why a normal person would recoil from using it.

Comments of Donna French

" Homolka's keeping to the name Teale taken from a fictious serial killer in the movie criminal law -during 12 years of incarceration is alarming...Associating and identifying herself with a serial killer and psychopath...when she could have chosen any other name inthe world can only be dscribed as chilling."

Donna French, mother of Karla and Paul's victim, Kirsten French.
