'All clear' given after scare at UB
All clear given after possible gunman alert
Updated: Wednesday, 17 Feb 2010, 7:17 AM EST

The 'all clear' has been given at the University at Buffalo, just hours after a campus-wide alert about a possible gunman.
With guns drawn, University and Amherst Police surrounded Lockwood Library Tuesday afternoon.
A student reported seeing a man walk into the building with a gun.
Police checked surveillance video and say they found what appeared to be a man carrying something into the library.
"Could of been a weapon underneath a coat, could have been one of these tripods for a camera, we couldn't say for sure," said Chief Jerry Schoenle of the University Police Department.
Police evacuated the library and all evening classes were canceled.
UB Spectrum Editor Steve Marth said, "Everyone I spoke to didn't see anyone, but they heard screaming. That's all we know. So I don't if it's just from the scare of the threat, people were screaming, or if there was an actual incident."
News 4 obtained surveillance video from inside the library.
Police spent hours searching, but found no gun, and no suspicious person.
By 8 police gave the 'all clear' and a university spokesperson said there was no threat to the campus.

Entire UB campus was quickly alerted
Students knew through e-mail, texts and on the web
Updated: Tuesday, 16 Feb 2010, 3:04 PM EST

The entire campus quickly got the alert through the UB website, e-mails or text messages.
Many students who receive text messaging received that message almost immediately when the campus sent it out at about 4:40 p.m. But those students who signed up for the e-mail alerts didn't receive that e-mail until almost an hour later. Regardless, most people knew what was going on at North Campus.
Within minutes of the incident being reported, UB's North Campus was buzzing with activity. Students were out trying to get a glimpse of what was going on at Lockwood Library.
Many knew the building was closed already due to a campus-wide alert that went out at 4:40 in the afternoon.
UB student Laura Straub said, "Some of our classmates received text messages alarming them of what had happened and things like that from their parents. They had heard things on the radio and on the news."
Laura and Josh were in class in the building next to Lockwood. Jay Shah was working in the Student Union and received the e-mail from Public Safety.
"It just said that classes are canceled and stuff," said Shah.
That e-mail said that Lockwood Library was evacuated and that classes were canceled for the evening. It warned students to stay away from campus until further notice, but didn't explain why. It didn't really matter though. Thanks to cell phones and social media sites many already knew what was going on.
UB Spectrum Managing Editor Matt Mosher said, "We're checking Twitter for story ideas and story updates and all of a sudden Steve, our Editor in Chief, saw Lockwood being evacuated."
So in the end it turns out that there's likely no gunman on campus, but it did give the university the chance to use its campus-wide alert system for students. And they're hoping that this may prompt more students to sign up for it in the future.

UB back to normal, investigation continues
Updated: February 17, 2010, 10:52 am /
Published: February 17, 2010, 10:50 am
University at Buffalo police continue their investigation after Tuesday's evacuation of a North Campus library, but police officials say they were not able to confirm there was a man with a gun on campus and there is no longer a threat to the university.
Lockwood Library is open, and classes, activities and operations at UB have returned to normal, university officials said this morning.
UB police responded immediately to a possible sighting of a gunman on campus yesterday, but a thorough four-hour search of the library did not uncover anyone suspicious, UB Police Chief Gerald Schoenle said.
"We responded to an unconfirmed report with an abundance of caution, andno continuing threat to the campus community could be verified,"Schoenle said. "We have increased our police presence on the North Campus as a precaution."
