Talking Cub Scout Saves Brother's Life

(Nov. 6) -- Ten-year-old Alex Whitehouse of Turner, Maine, never thought he'd need to use the Heimlich maneuver so soon after learning it in Cub Scouts.

But last week, when Alex's 4-year-old brother, Drake, was jumping on a bed in his bedroom and eating a Tootsie Roll, Alex had to come to the rescue, local TV station WCSH6 reported.

Shortly after their brother Damien, 8, came upstairs with some candy, Alex heard Drake choking. He grabbed his brother around the stomach, pushed his head and back down parallel to the floor and performed the life-saving maneuver. The piece of candy popped out.

The boys' mother, Michelle, was downstairs and never heard the commotion.

The boys came downstairs with tears in their eyes and told her what happened.

"I'm so proud of my son," their mother said.

Alex says he figured he might use the life-saving skills he learned in Cub Scouts one day, but not this soon. He was also surprised by Drake's reaction.

"He was mad that he didn't get to finish the Tootsie Roll," Alex told a reporter from WCSH.

Damien understood the gravity of the situation, though, when he told his older brother, "Good job."
