Madison Fleaks had been in Texas Children's Hospital in Houston for over six months waiting for a heart transplant. She was born with a congenital heart condition.
Not yet two years old, she may have forgotten much of her life at home. But she still remembered her two dogs; their photograph sat framed next to her hospital bed.

It's not something done on a routine basis that I know of (but I don't work in the med/surg areas) but years ago, we had a long term, often returning heart patient. On her final visit, her cat had had kittens and she wanted to see them. I told the daughter, if we didn't see her bring them in, we couldn't say anything about it, just make sure it would be during a time the infection control bear--uh, nurse--wouldn't be around!!!! To this day, the daughter thanks us for letting her bring the kittens to her mother.
@ one time, there was a program presented that included letting pets in to see terminal patients or those who would be in hospital long term. It was one of those programs the hospital spent a gazillion dollars on a consultant, then did nothing w/the information. I keep waiting for some cowboy wanting to have his horse visit, but darn it, no one has asked yet!!!!My invisible friend says you have issues.
