Cool MAJOR New York State Animal Abuse Registry announcement at the Barkyard!!

ALL ARE INVITED (feel free to bring your four legged friends)! Please join us THIS TUESDAY, April 24th for a very special announcement regarding a proposed Animal Abuse Registry bill for New York State! This bill, being introduced by Senator Mark Grisanti, will work to protect companion animals AND the people in the State of New York. This measure will not only reduces the number of animal victims but also help communities save money by reducing rehabilitation costs.

Erie County Legislator, Terrence D. McCracken has already introduced this bill for enactment in Erie County.

“While on the animal abuse registry, people will be prohibited from possessing, adopting, owning, buying or exercising control over any animal,” Legislator McCracken said. “The penalty for a person buying an animal while on the list or selling an animal to a person on the list would be a fine not exceeding $1,000. The penalty for a person failing to register and/or update information annually or within 30 days would be a fine not exceeding $500 for each day the person fails to register or update their information.”

“Acts of animal cruelty in Erie County, Western New York and across the state and country occur much too frequently, and I believe that this local law can be one of the weapons fighting this crime and the repeated violations by some offenders,” Legislator McCracken concluded. “Animals are for the most part defenseless victims with regard to abuse. Data shows that those who have abused animals tend to repeat that abuse. Further, studies show a connection between those who have abused animals also have tendencies for domestic abuse and crimes in society. Animals are loving pets and parts of many families, and deserve to be treated well and not be abused.”

Grisanti Proposes Law To Establish Central State Registry For Pet Abusers In New York State

Senator Mark Grisanti (R-60) today announced the sponsorship of legislation (S6875) that would amend the agriculture and markets law to have the commissioner create an animal abuse central registry in New York State for anyone over the age of 18 who is convicted in a case of animal abuse.

The law would require abusers to register annually and prohibit animal abusers from possessing, adopting, owning, purchasing or exercising control over an animal as long as they are required to register. Any animal abuser who intentionally or knowingly fails to comply with the registration requirements or provides false information will be guilty of a felony which is to be punishable by a imprisonment not to exceed four years or a fine not to exceed five thousand dollars or both. Shelters and pet stores would also be required to check the registry when selling or adopting an animal.

“This long overdue law is much like the sex offender database and is modeled after the proposal set forth in Erie and Suffolk counties. It is a workable plan that would not only help animals but save money and ultimately prevent potential violence against human beings,” said Senator Mark Grisanti, Buffalo. “Animal abusers are heinous people who hurt and kill animals that are incapable of defending themselves. An individual who would hurt an animal should be punished severely and this animal registry will ensure they are not able to own more possible victims of their future violence.”

    Hard har har

Grisanti Goes To (Bat For) The Dogs

Cold, windy weather didn’t keep away animal lovers and their fury friends this early afternoon at Buffalo’s “Bark Park” in LaSalle Park this Tuesday as a press event was held there for State Senator Mark Grisanti’s announcement about his sponsorship of legislation to create an animal abuse central registry in New York State for those convicted of animal abuse.
Since I really couldn’t hear with the high winds, I’m going the lazy route and quoting Senator Grisanti from his press release:

“Animal abusers are heinous people who hurt and kill animals that are incapable of defending themselves. An individual who would hurt an animal should be punished severely and this animal registry will ensure they are not able to own more possible victims of their future violence.”

So, the next time somebody tries to marinade their cat, perhaps this will keep them from adopting additional pets in the future.

Studies have shown a connection between the abuse of animals and violence against people including a 2001-2004 Chicago Police Department study that revealed of those arrested for animal crimes, 65% had been arrested for battery against another person. Of 36 convicted multiple murderers questioned in another study, 46% admitted committing acts of animal torture as an adolescent. And of seven school shootings that took place in the country from 1997-2001, all involved boys who had previously committed acts of animal cruelty.

    Unhappy

EC looks to make animal abuse registry

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Erie County lawmakers want to create a registry that would list convicted animal abusers.

The registry's search engine would function similarly to the sex offender registry. A convicted animal abuser would be required to register and wouldn't be allowed to own a dog, cat, or horse for up to five years. Wednesday was the second public hearing on the proposal.

I think it would be better if the abusers couldn't own ANY living creature!!

    For LIFE!!

Any animal can be abused, and they ALL feel fear, neglect, and pain!!
