Joran van der Sloot charged with Murder in Peru
Posted: 02:35 PM ET
Prosecutors in Limahave formally charged Joran van der Sloot with first degree murder and theft. They are asking for a 30 year jail sentence and a restitution payment to Flores’ family of 200,000 soles (about $73,100).
They have also charged the 3 Peruvian drivers that took Van der Sloot across the border to Chile as he was trying to flee the country. They are asking for a 5 year jail sentence and a restitution payment to the state of 5,000 soles (about$1,800).
From In Session's Jean Casarez:
Peruvian law states that with formal charges being filed, the case now becomes public meaning any court hearings including the trial will be open to the public. The “investigative” portion of the case conducted by the judge has now concluded. For one year now, the judge has been interviewing witnesses in his chambers and conducting by himself the discovery portion of the case. This information was handed over to prosecutors and they determined what formal charges would be filed. The defense also has all of the information from the court’s investigation.
Currently, there is no set date for van der Sloot's trial.

InSession/TruTV is covering the VDS murder trial this morning. He's expected to plead guilty to qualified homicide; prosecutors are asking for a thirty year sentence. Stefany's family has made a statement that they will be content with whatever sentence the judge imposes.

Dutch citizen apologizes for murder in Peru trial
His lawyer, Jose Jimenez, said earlier this week that Van der Sloot's plea could reduce his sentence to 10 years from 25-35 years.
Jimenez said that at the time of Flores's death, Van der Sloot was suffering from "post-traumatic stress" caused by inquiries into his possible ties to Holloway's disappearance.

Joran van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years behind bars for the murder of Stephany Flores
(CBS/AP) LIMA, Peru - A Peruvian court has sentenced Joran van der Sloot to 28 years in prison for murder of a young woman he met at a Lima casino...
Prosecutors asked for a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft in the killing of Flores, who died five years to the day after U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, who was last seen with van der Sloot, disappeared on the island of Aruba.
Van der Sloot's attorney argued that his client should receive a lighter sentence because he was suffering from post-traumatic stress relating to the anniversary of Holloway's disappearance at the time of Flores' murder...

Joran Van Der Sloot Sentencing: Dutchman Slapped With 28 Years For Murder Of Stephany Flores
A haggard and beaten-looking Joran van der Sloot was sentenced Friday to 28 years in prison for the 2010 slaying of Peruvian business student Stephany Flores...
After the charges were entered into record, van der Sloot listened stone-faced as his sentence was pronounced -- 28 years behind bars and $200,000 solace for civil reparations.
Credited with time served, van der Sloot's release date was set as June 10, 2038. Following his release, he will be expelled from the country, the court ordered.
"Losing the person that one loves most is not fair," the victim's father, Ricardo Flores, said to reporters at the courthouse. "On Monday, through our attorneys, we will be calling a press conference to let you know all the irregularities and all the things that have occurred during this trial [and] from the day this person has been arrested."...

I did read he was running a lucrative candy biz from his jail cell courtesy of the nutbar. Had a flat screen tv and a few other perks in his cell. The Flores Family addressed this with the Courts. I'll have to find the link. Sloot will be lucky to even survive in this prison. Too bad so Sad LOL

Both odd and humorous ...
Not one news outlet addressed Joran's appearance in court, and what appears to be his drug induced behavior. He was twitching, scratching, squirming and had obvious open sores on his face.
Curious to see what happens to him next, what prison he'll be in and whether or not he'll be released into general pop.

Yep and he is facing many years in the U.S. That's if he survives long enough to get there. I remember seeing a documentary regarding the prison Sloot will likely be housed at. The conditions are deplorable. YEAH!!!! Survival of the fittest or the richest LOL Rampant TB,Aids and the food unsafe to eat. Sounds perfect for him.

Sure hope we see him in General. He can try and fend just like his victims. I think i would rather be dead than in that hellhole. Good place for him LOL

My (rough) translation of the intro:
"A group of prisoners of the maximum security prison Piedras Gordas in Ancon, use a patio to make, mix and prepare cocaine paste with absolute peace to sell to other prisoners."
sooooo, based on how he acted in court today, I suggest he may not last 5 years. jmho. All my posts are my own opinion based on information available to the public. I am not a reporter. jmo, jmho, and moo to you too! oh, and sometimes it's a joke-lighten up!

And here we have the reality of prison in Peru: http://elcomercio.pe/lima/478793/not...ntes-seguridad
Some of my rough translations:
"Hard to believe, but true. The new prison Piedras Gordas II, said to be a central referral prison, is ready, but it doesn't have personnel for its operation."
"We have a deficit of approximately 2000 prison workers."
"...after the scandal where (prisoner) Fujimori received 180 visitors in one day."
I sure hope they solved that staffing issue since that feature was published last year.

Transferred to Piedras Gordas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joran_van_der_Sloot
Hours after learning of the sentence, Van der Sloot was transferred to maximum security prisons to "Piedras Gordas" (Fat Stones) located north of Lima.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...crime#comments
Regardless of what happens in Peru, Griffith said van der Sloot will eventually be extradited to the U.S. for the alleged extortion plot.
Griffith said van der Sloot's alleged statements about Holloway, along with his previous confessions, are enough for U.S. authorities to bring a circumstantial murder case against him.
"There is no statute of limitations," Griffith said. "So even if he serves the max, he can still go on trial in the U.S."
By looking at his drug induced appearance in court. I believe it more than likely he'll die of a drug overdose in prison.

Joran Van Der Sloot Appeals 28-Year Murder Sentence
Just when you thought you had heard the last from Joran van der Sloot, the convicted killer of a young Peruvian woman and the prime suspect in the disappearance of a U.S. citizen, the Dutchman is making headlines once again.
On Monday, van der Sloot's lawyer, Luis Jimenez, filed a motion to reduce his client's prison sentence.
"I am questioning the content of the sentence and asking for a reduction of the years [of the sentence]," Jimenez told El Comercio.
On Jan. 13, Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in prison, for the murder of Stephany Flores...

Joran begs for help from Mary Hamer, his former, "guardian angel," while she distances herself from him, and finds a new rescue project.

Common sense would dictate this issue would be better left with the state department, given our current relationship with Iran.
