So it seems Carnes got her info about the 4.5/5 scale from Team Ramsey.
Like Jayelles said in her post, Patsy mentions the scale in 2000 (on Larry King Live (March 28, 2000).
She also says there:
Compare this with SteveThomas' statement on
Larry Ling Live (April 14, 2000)
THOMAS: Well, I think the most significant evidence in this case was the pen, the pad, the ransom note and the handwriting. And when we finished an investigation after 18 months and presented our case to the district attorney's office, presumably for them to move it forward, one statistic that was cited in that presentation was that out of 73 people whose handwriting was examined in this case, there was only one whose handwriting showed evidence to suggest authorship, who was in the home that night, who couldn't be eliminated as the author, and that was Patsy Ramsey.
It would interest me which scale did Chet Ubowski and his colleagues use? Was it the same scale which Patsy mentioned? If it was, did Patsy give a correct interpretation of the result?
Why can this scale (where "5" allegedly equals 'elimination') not be found anywhere on official websites?
Out of 73 people whose handwriting was analyzed, only one showed evidence of authorship, and that was Patsy.
John's story is that "they have looked at leads whose handwriting scored much higher than Patsy"? Team Ramsey had hired "their own" handwriting experts I suppose ...

"Team Ramsey" hired two of the six experts. The other four were hired by the BPD. Irregardless of a scale, the consensus was that Patsy probably did not write the note.
Patsy's statement re: other matches stronger than hers, again without using a scale is true. Steve Thomas' statement was inaccurate. In his own book, Thomas states that McReynolds handwriting was similar but he did not believe he had anything to do with the murder because of his disability
According to PMPT p166 - Merriman's handwriting was so close they believed he wrote the note but did not kill JBR; p182 - Glenn Meyers handwriting was was similiar; p181 Henderson's handwriting similar and no DNA ever taken because Harmon was working on it and she left the case and noone followed up. Wolf's handwriting was also similar; so similar his girlfriend turned him into BPD.
DNA: McReynolds and Barnhill's DNA could not be excluded p182
Also don't forget that Thomas relied on Foster's analysis and he was discredited because prior to him saying Patsy wrote the note he had sent Patsy a written memo stating he believed 100% that she did not write the note. Thomas knew this before he wrote the book but states it should have been left up to the jury to decide whether Foster was credible?? He would have been impeached -- why doesn't Thomas understand that?
