KENTON COUNTY, Ky. -- A Crescent Springs man is behind bars for allegedly supplying alcohol to his two-year-old stepchild who had to be rushed to the hospital.

Erlanger police say Raymond Jackson, 23, encouraged the little girl to drink a mixture of gin and iced tea at their home in the Crescent Ridge Apartments on Woodhill Court in Crescent Springs.

The girl's mother discovered something wasn't right when she got home from work.

"She went in to kiss the girl goodnight, [she] immediately realized something was wrong and that's when she decided she better take the child to the hospital," said Erlanger Police Lieutenant Kevin Gilpin.

The girl was rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital by Jackson and the girl's mother after she became unresponsive.

Neighbors say they're troubled by the alleged incident.

"To allow someone to feed the baby alcohol, that inexcusable," said Vickie Martin, a mother of six.

"I hope the child makes it and I hope it doesn't have any permanent damage. But, with the level of alcohol, even an adult can have alcohol poisoning," she said.

Jackson is charged with criminal abuse.

He was arraigned on Monday and given a $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court on June 1.

Police say the child had a blood-alcohol level of .250, over three times the legal limit in Kentucky. She was later transported to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati due to the seriousness of the alcohol level.

Police tell 9 News there was enough alcohol in the girl's system to kill her.

The child is back at home.

Jackson was the only adult in the home at the time of the incident. He provided a statement to police that he allowed and encouraged the girl to drink the mixture of gin and iced tea.

"At the hospital in Edgewood, Erlanger police interviewed the stepfather who was the sole caretaker of that child that evening. And he stated to the police and cooperated with police and stated to us that he provided and encouraged the alcohol to the two-year-old," said Lt. Gilpin. "He never told us why. Never said why."
