LISBON, Portugal (Sept. 23) - The mother of missing British girl Madeleine McCann said Wednesday she has gained fresh hope for her daughter from the discovery of American Jaycee Dugard, who was found in California 18 years after being kidnapped.

Kate McCann said she and her husband won't give up the search for Madeleine, who vanished in May 2007 during a family vacation on Portugal's southern Algarve coast.

"I just think that it's so vital and so fair for Madeleine that we don't give up on her, that we look for her," Kate McCann told a news conference during a daylong visit to Lisbon, Portugal. "We're not going to stop."

Dugard, now 29, was reunited with her family last month after being snatched outside her South Lake Tahoe home when she was 11. She allegedly was kidnapped and held captive.

Kate, accompanied by her husband Gerry, was in Portugal for the first time since Madeleine disappeared a few days before her fourth birthday. Gerry had twice previously returned to Portugal to check on the investigation. The couple said they met with their Portuguese lawyers and advisers in the Portuguese capital to explore ways of moving the search forward.

Earlier this month a Lisbon judge banned the sale of a book by a Portuguese detective who had worked on the case and claimed Madeleine was dead. The ruling came after the McCanns took legal action to halt the book's distribution.

"Our main worry, obviously, was people believing that Madeleine was dead," Kate McCann said of the injunction. "Obviously, if people believe that she is not alive then people will stop looking for her."

Gerry McCann said there was no evidence his daughter is dead. He said a team of private investigators is still working on the case and is going through "hundreds of thousands" of pieces of information.

The search is being financed by family, friends and other private donations, he said.

In August 2008, Portugal's attorney general ordered police to halt their investigation because detectives had uncovered no evidence of a crime. The case will remain closed unless new evidence emerges.

The McCanns have waged a far-reaching international campaign to find their daughter, but there has been no reliable indication of what might have happened to her, despite numerous reported sightings from around the world.

ON the one hand, who knows how many kids are still out there. Steven Stayner came back, Elizabeth Smart came back, Jaycee came back...but how many is that really out of the missing?

So sad.

Oh, and for the "no evidence of a crime" thing: Hello? where's the baby? Her absence is the evidence of a crime, hello!?

Yes that's true. I can't even imagine being in the McCann's shoes - I think they made a terrible mistake that night and trusted their children would be ok in their room alone - wow, who in a million years would think your child would be abducted from their room. I truly believe someone was watching the family and whoever that person is knows where Madeline is.

Their consciences must have practially devoured them by now. Are the parents still together? Many a marriage, even when there are other children to care for, have fallen apart over less. Tragedies seem to more often weaken than to provide strength.

I wouldn't leave three children under the age of five alone in a room when I went out to eat, but the first thing I would be thinking of would be fire. Abduction would be second.

They are still together, still strong.

Good for you. Alas I think there is no such thing as a perfect parent.

You live and learn. The first time I let my 4 year old play alone in the backyard with the dog, I opened the front door to let my friend out, and she was like, Is that your dog? Sure enough, my son had thrown the dog's toy over the fence, the dog had broken down the fence to get at it, then proceeded to run through the neighbor's house, and was running up the street, 4 year old right behind.

Mine ended well, but you never know what can happen from a seemingly innocent decision. Think how many near misses we have each day, some we never even know wbout.

Yeah, that. Maybe it's my upbringing, but the last thing I would do would be to leave three littlies alone. I'm sure I would make other mistakes a-plenty though.

We weren't left alone at night 'til we we old enough to call 911 and get out of the place safely -- like ten or so.
