BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - A North Tonawanda man accused of slashing a baby's throat is expected to appear in court today.

19 year-old Jeffrey Hernandez could enter a guilty plea on attempted murder charges.

Amherst Police say they were forced to taser Hernandez back in June after he cut a two inch gash in a 6 month old's throat during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

Jeffrey Hernandez pleaded guilty today to first- and second-degree assault for slashing the throat of an infant girl and stabbing the child in the back as Amherst police tasered him during a confrontation with the child's mother four months ago.

Hernandez, 19, of Sweeney Street, North Tonawanda, faces a 12-year prison term when he is sentenced Dec. 3 on his pre-indictment plea, State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski told him.

Without going into detail, Hernandez admitted slashing and stabbing the 6-month-old daughter of his former girlfriend. The attack occurred after police responded to the woman's call for help and confronted Hernandez as he held the infant in the kitchen of her Travers Court flat about 4 a.m. last June 11.

Prosecutor Hope R. Jay said the mother of the now-10-month-old child, who has fully recovered, consented to the plea deal. Jay said prosecutors will demand a 20-year order of protection for the mother and child at sentencing.

The knife assault was the result of a heated argument Hernandez had that morning with his victim's mother, the prosecutor said. He slashed the child after officers repeatedly asked him to let the baby go, Jay said.
