(Aug. 6) - Private investigators hired by Madeleine McCann's family reached out to the public Thursday to find a "Victoria Beckham look-alike" who they hope can help in the search for the missing British girl.
Madeleine was 3 years old when she was reported missing May 3, 2007. Her parents said they left her sleeping in their vacation cottage in southern Portugal while they went to dinner. When they returned, Madeleine's younger siblings were still asleep but she was gone.
Private investigators hired by Gerry and Kate McCann released a computer-generated sketch of a woman two British men reported seeing in Barcelona, Spain, a few days after Madeleine disappeared. The woman said something to one of the men that made him think she could offer useful information, McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said at a London news conference covered by The Guardian, Daily Mail, Sky News and other British media.
The white woman was described as short, slim and "a bit of a Victoria Beckham look-alike," Mitchell said. She appeared to be between 30 and 35. She had an Australian or New Zealand accent and also appeared to be fluent in Spanish or Catalan, he said.
Investigations by Portuguese and British police have failed to determine what happened to Madeleine. Her parents and a British man who lived near the resort were named as suspects in her disappearance by Portuguese police, but authorities later cleared all three of suspicion.
Portuguese police consider the case closed.
