Scranton Police detain suspect in fatal arson

A 40-year-old Scranton man is in custody and being treated as a suspect in an arson early Tuesday that killed a 9-year-old boy and critically injured his 10-year-old brother, police said. (UPDATE: The brother has also died of injuries from the fire)

William Robert Woods, the ex-boyfriend of the victims' mother Tyaisha Leary, was arrested Tuesday night for threatening to kill her and burn down her house July 3, police said. He has not been charged with the arson at 166-168 S. Hyde Park Ave., where he formerly lived with Ms. Leary and her three sons, police said.

Mr. Woods, of South Edwards Court, was arraigned Tuesday night on charges of terroristic threats and simple assault for the July 3 incident. After the arraignment, he was transported to Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The fire at the two-story, two-family home started about 1:15 a.m. Taevon Miles, who lived at 166 S. Hyde Park with his mother and two brothers, was pronounced dead at Community Medical Center at 2:07 a.m., the Lackawanna County coroner's office said. An autopsy determined he died of burns and smoke inhalation.

Second West Scranton arson victim dies

City police are investigating a double homicide after the death of a second child who was critically injured in the West Scranton arson that killed his 9-year-old brother.

Michael Miles, 10, of 166 S. Hyde Park Ave., died shortly before midnight Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Lehigh County First Deputy Coroner Paul Hoffman said Wednesday. An autopsy is scheduled today.

Police have named William Robert Woods, 40, former boyfriend of Tyaisha Leary, the boys' mother, as a suspect in the arson.

Michael suffered burns and smoke inhalation when flames ripped through his family's home early Tuesday. His brother, Taevon, was pronounced dead at Community Medical Center shortly after the fire. Ms. Leary and a third son, Nijea Miles, 12, also suffered injuries.

Mr. Woods remained in jail Wednesday on charges that he threatened to kill Ms. Leary and burn her house down on July 3, but he has not been charged with setting the fire.
