Jumping in as usual. Hello to all on this fine Sunday evening. Anyhow, I am just watching Extreme Makeover:Home Edition. It always makes me feel good. The part that I don't like is when they show the home being demolished. Call me crazy, but if I was in need of a new home and they had to tear down my old one, well, I would grieve alittle bit. I got very attached to our first home - a mobile home - cause my kids were babies there and that little place protected us from the elements and kept my babies safe. I remember when we moved out I said good-bye and thank you for what it had given us when we could afford nothing else. I always wonder if any of the family members shed a tear when they rip down the old house.
I watch this show every sunday. I think most who are recipients are more than grateful for their new digs. We don't always see what goes on behind the scenes nor do we know if a family is truly grateful or not, but I think most are. It's one of those feel good programs - I think we need more of these type of shows now a days. Just sayin.... :rose:

We (my kids and I) were in a 2 bedroom house. I was moving to get to another school district when DD started school and made sure we got a 3 bedroom house. Each kid had their own room---for all the good that did. They still slept in the same room for a while, guess it was a bit of an adjustment, being a little kid all alone in the room @ night!!! lol.
What they started up doing (but don't tell the people who patrol family life) was to sleep in MY room. Then, DD moved out into the front room, DS slept on the floor beside my bed for a while, before moving on to the bedroom. They each had their own bed, anyway. It all worked out--if they were in the same room, that meant there was a place for Grandma and PopPop to sleep when they came to visit!!!
LOL! Weebles defined! LOL!

Good morning people. Just a quick hello before I start my day. Minus 27 celcius here today - that is very cold btw. We had enough snow over the weekend that my husband started up the snow blower 3 times to keep it cleared off.
Anyhow will check back later and see how the world of crime is coming along. Have a great Monday!!!:seeya:

Let the snow begin.... My side yard on Sunday morning. My mom's b-day was yesterday and her one of her cousin's in Montreal called. Apparently Montreal has not had snow yet.
I was a good daughter. I still ventured off the mountain, picked mom up, took her out to lunch and took her Christmas shopping. Stores were very quiet, lots of sales. I also shoveled the bottom of her driveway where the snowplow added more snow after her driveway was initially cleaned.

Sherlock I saw that makeover for the house last night. I agree that the house should not be destroyed if it is liveable. that particular house in my opinion was not liveable. the termite problem was so out of control the house was not going to last either way. too much wood had been eaten.
I understand what you mean though. my dh and I have very old cars not on purpose and we cringe every time we saw a car destroyed for that new program of turning in a gas guzzler to get a better car. All the people that could use a new car gas guzzler or not and you knew some of those cars had to be driveable!!!! whew.....Okay I am done ranting thanks!!! IMO

ITA totally about cash for clunkers! The rule was they HAD to be drivable. When my mom has to get another car, it would have been one of those destroyed, and they are now more expensive because there are fewer of them! Also, I always get used cars: I hate that they lose value when new the second you drive them off the lot, and why encourage more cars anyway? Oh, and cheaper! Or they were...
Out here, we saw a lot of perfectly good drivable cars being destroyed in exchange for Lexus and luxury cars, carp like that. I have seen a lot of idiotic things out of Washington, but this one will be hard to beat.

Can the snowblower be fixed quickly? DH has a large pickup and a plow. He plows his office parking lot and our driveway which is kind of long and uphill. Best investment he ever made.
March seems like a long way off.

I would imagine with that hill you would need at least that. Do you still have problems getting up to the house in the winter? snowplow probably can be fixed but dh is being to stubborn to get it done.. he does all the shoveling though so my mouth remains sealed. LOL

You can whine girlfriend all you want. but me and Shady and Sherlock and beemer and all the rest of us that are buried in that white stuff will find it hard to commiserate when we are buried in it for 4 months..........I guess I will cancel my airtickets to come out there and be warm. LOL
Remeber scarves are in fashion now. You will be okay. It will not last.
Seriously it would be kind of a shock for me to have that happen when I am not used to it. at home I am in sweats and slippers. keep the feet warm. it is important. and i use comforters for when I am sitting across my lap. And tea or anything warm to drink is good and soup warms you up.
If you can put something under the doors going outside to stop drafts will help. We have them all over our house. Shawls are good to and they are in style...................... sara

I had my kids at 29 and 31. I My oldest is 10. I had them in this generation of new things to help for babies easier to manage. Having said that, I still found it plenty stressful. It is almost that there is too much information out there, too many choices, too much of "you should" do this or "you should" do that...you feel like a failure when something goes wrong because you can't decipher the problem. My mom showed up 2 weeks after I had both of my kids (she lives 8 hours away) and because my husband was going to be going back to work. She walked in and took one look at me trying to follow all of the new rules of having babies and encouraged me to try a few old methods as well. It worked out great. Hopefully I won't start a huge debate here but she told me to put baby on the stomach to sleep because they like the snuggle of their own warmth. Also when my son was sleeping and waking and had gotten into this routine of every 45 mins. to an hour, she thought we should let him cry it out. Only had to do that once and he slipped into a long and blissful sleep and was a terrific sleeper after that. What I am trying to say is that we are so bombarded with worries these days (and not that they are unfounded) but sometimes a good ole fashioned approach to things works good to.
With respect to the sleeping on the stomach thing..we thought that the risk of SIDS was greatly diminished due to the fact that nobody smoked in our home and I was breastfeeding.
i had my oldest when i was 20, he just turned 4 in september two weeks before the new baby was born...i don't know what it is, my age then and now....experience i have now that i did not have before, but new baby soo much easier to take care of than our oldest lol. probably because now i know what to expect and i am not just shooting off in the dark all the time.
now the tummy sleeping thing is a sore spot for me. because i KNOW that when i was a baby the doctors told my mom to ONLY let me sleep on my tummy because back then babies died of SIDS while sleeping on their backs. somewhere in the past 20 years they changed their minds back and forth more than once. so...my babies slept and sleep however they are comfy. whether that be back tummy or side. the little one will only sleep on his tummy, like his brother before him....when the doctors ask me about whether i sleep them on the back or the tummy i lie lol :punch:
i am not sorry that i started having kids early because for as long as i can remember the only thing i wanted out of life was to be a mommy. now i am completely fulfilled. we might not have money, and our car is falling apart.....but i have everything i ever wanted in life and MORE and i couldn't be happier. of course i was never a big partier in my wildest teenage moments. just depends on the person i guess

NOT even close to normal for here Sara. here in my county, December is usually in the mid to upper thirties at its coldest, it hardly ever snows and when it does what falls can hardly be called snow at all, more like slushy mess that turns to water in about 2 minutes. now the temperatures are lower than i can ever remember them being here and only going to go lower, but no rain yet. i have a feeling that if we DO get some rain, it might actually be the first real snow i have ever seen in my life. i kinda hope it does, but then again i don't....we aren't used to this stuff here, its just not normal lol

I don't mind snow as long as I don't have to be out in it. Having grown up in the midwest and living east coast before moving to Cali the cold and snow isn't anything new to me although I did move here to get away from it. Current temp is 43 and supposed to get down to 29 tonight with possible rain.

Santa Ana's tend to be warm-they blow in off the desert when we have low pressure. When we get them in Northern California they're called Diablos. El Nino is possible: I remember hard freezes and snow in the 70's and the 90's and iirc on El Nino years. If it's El Nino, we will have huge warm rains in March and flooding. Its already been pretty wet, which is good since we've had a drought. And you know about me and AGW ;)
Hey, you wanna hear the water conservation poem we were taught in the drought of '76? Of course you do! "In this land of drought and sun, we do not flush for number one. If I knew that, I would open Ginger's Pancake House. But I suspect real butter, and lots of it, has something to do with it. There's also Danish versions with berries and stuff, but I like my pancakes straight up...mmmmm.
There are two routes from northern cal to Disneyland: I-5 and Highway 101. I-5 is faster by half, but it is a wasteland. 101 is longer, but there's all sorts of awesome stuff like Solvang and Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, ocean views...it is so hard to choose which way to go! my mom sent this to me in my email the other day, thought i would share it with you all.
A Different Kind Of Christmas Poem
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "It’s really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."
"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

my mom sent this to me in my email the other day, thought i would share it with you all.

I know I read about happy family reunions in the womens' magazines. Heartwarming, for sure. But I have also seen reunions that did not have the fairy tale endings. Heartbreaking, for sure.
Some of the people had very high expectations of happily ever after. Even when what goes on is what goes on in everyday life--disagreements, disappointments, etc---some folks could not take that there was the least bit of disharmony (is that a word?) in the relationship. The very kind of everyday things that would probably have gone on if there had been no separation, things they accept as "normal" with the people they have lived w/all their lives.

HOLY CRAAAAP it has NEVER been this cold here since i can remember. hubby went out to warm up the car to take my nephew to school and there was an inch and a half of ice on the windshield and the defroster wouldn't defrost it. he went and poured water on it and it just froze in a sheet down the back of the car. we had to have my mom leave work and take him to school and then let us use her car because ours is just covered in ice everywhere. we are warm enough inside, i am really glad i thought to bring in my cats and dogs last night too. It's 12 F here now, with "feels like" -3. The wind is only 11mph. I didn't see what the snow accumulation is, supposed to be 1-2 inches for the duration of the storm. There's probably that much there now, and the majority of the snow is supposed to come sometime later today.

It doesn't really feel too bad here, when the wind isn't blowing. In fact, there were many folks who only wore jackets when the temp was 17 the other day. No wind--as long as you aren't doing a long walk or working in the elements, a jacket is enough. I did find my winter coat after 2 years. Might put it on sometime this season, if I remember.
I did receive a call from work--the meeting I was supposed to go to @ 3 has been canceled. I told Patty--aw, you break my heart!!!! NOT!!!

I love my hibiscus too. Mine live in the living room for the winter and love to their outdoor quarter living space in May. Cover what you are afraid of freezing with quilts, or even sheets. I have a lot of experience with protecting stuff from freezing.

And cars. Very important to warm your cars up at least 5 to 10 minutes before going anywhere. The fluids in your car will be sluggish. Also while it is warming up defrost the car. It will remove a lot of snow and ice from the outside of the car before you clean it off.

Also make sure to have a warm head covering. You lose a lot of heat out of your head. Keeps your ears from freezing off, too. Oh, and the ski masks w/face covering are great--keeps your nose and lips from freezing, plus you do need to worry about the freezing cold air entering thru the mouth and nose. (I was trying to look up the dangers of breathing in the freezing air, but couldn't find it, sorry.) But, it is important to keep all parts of the body from frost bite--layers of clothing, several pairs of sox if you are going to be out walking for any length of time, etc.
I remember one Christmas celebration that was kind of canceled. The folks and a niece and nephew had already come up to my house, and one sister and her family lived in my town, but all the family that were going to come up the day of the get together had to cancel out because of a snow storm.
But, how good a time can you have @ the family doings if you die getting there? Or, are severely injured. Ruins the whole holiday for everyone if tragedy happens.

Yeah, this has been a good warning to me. The jacket I thought would be perfect for cold? no. I am digging out the tried and true toasty vintage coats-including the Berkeley-banned FUR!
I'm not sure what my winter coat is made of. Down filled something, I am sure. I can tell ya, when I put that on one day and stepped out, I had NO IDEA how cold it really was. In fact, after having it on for just a bit, I was getting a tad bit too warm. For sure, I take it off in the car. Too bulky for one thing, get too warm for another. But I do have it right there, in case I'm needing to get out, or in case there is car problems that would prohibit running the heater.
Brother is bringing the folks up for an appointment for Daddy. OMG, he is making it like a major production. Of course, if he had been involved in any of the stuff us girls have been taking care of, he wouldn't think twice about it. Anyway, he says he plans on having a couple of bottles of iced tea, some space blankets, just in case they run into trouble. I suggested perhaps some peanut butter crackers, too. Not that, if there was trouble it would be long before someone would stop to help. I am sure there will be traffic on the roads he will be taking. The fellow needs to get a pay as you go phone for things like this (altho I am sure he hopes he will not be in charge of getting the folks anywhere, again, lol.) He won't get an answering machine, a cell phone nor a computer. @ least, I don't THINK he has a computer. He probably does, just doesn't have email.

he used cold water, he was gonna use the hose.....HAHAHA.....it froze solid tho, so he had to come inside and fill up a pitcher and it was as cold as our facet would go but it steamed outside......unbelievable to me, i have never been in cold this intense in my life. he poured the water down the back windshield first and you can see where it froze while it was running down the back of the car. i went outside last night while my hair was still damp to let the dogs out and came back inside with ice in my hair!! i had to defrost in front of the heater for like 5 minutes.
the dogs are another pain in my rump right now....they are strictly OUTSIDE dogs normally. they used to be inside but the older one absolutely REFUSED to stop poopin on the floor no matter how often i took her out, so we got a pen to keep them outside in....hubby never wanted them lol so the cleaning of the poo is on me. so i bring them inside because i don't want them freezing to death, i am keeping them in the laundry room because it has linoleum for easy cleanup and a door to the outside for easy access lol. the cats also have to be inside, but we don't own a real litter box so they are in a bathroom with newspaper layed down, hopefully they use it :punch:

Shady mine were a house warming present and they were the hardy ones. I would be afraid to get the tropical. they did wonderful outside and inside.
The ones in the picture are not mine unfortunately and they look to be hardy but do not quote me on it. :seeya: sara
I plant the tropical ones in pots and they do great. They need a lot of water - everyday and maybe twice a day when the temp is in the high 90's. Since they are in pots I can just carry them in the house for the winter. I have one that is now like a tree. DH and I had a little trouble getting it into the house this year. I'll cut it way back late winter.
If I get any blooms this winter I'll take a photo and post.

That would be just lovely shady. I would love to see it. Our hardys were in pots but they just got old. I used to be upset about plants dying and my dear mom said "don't worry. they just die after awhile like any live thing"
So I am okay with it. I had a few umbrella plants from her when she passed away and they lived 30 years!!!!!!!!! the hardy ones are the same way in summer. lotsa water and very hard to bring in the house also. LOL

Hey, if the temp stays below freezing, be careful of your pipes. our neighbor had his break. But he was out of town, so maybe he had turned his heat down? But he came back to a hideous nightmare of ripping out walls and stuff. Maybe our winter buddies know how to prevent broken pipes?
Our dog is such a princess. His fat rump is literally pressed to the wall heater right now...I thought Labs could handle cold? Isn't Labrador in Canada? Its up to maybe 40 here now...I had to wedge my own butt against the washing machine to push him out the door with both feet.
And yeah, nippy. But brace for a warm, wet (read: flooding) March. In the El Nino of '86 I had the joy of seeing my school under water so if its as bad as that one watch out http://meteora.ucsd.edu/cap/elnino_calif.html

DS's cat was whining for me to let him out. I opened the door, he started to dash out--stopped suddenly when the cold hit, and he saw the white stuff. I gave him a nudge (just a nudge, no kicks or anything) with my toe and shut the door real quickly. All the cats have a really really heavy coat of fur (guess that is a forewarning of a long, cold winter) so it's not like he'll be too cold. Plus, there is a blanket in the dog house which they can all crawl into, keep each other warm and out of the wind.

Regarding the freezing of the pipes-you need to wrap them. There is a pipe wrap you can purchase. It's a stryrofoam insulation. Cold climate folk dont have pipes on outside walls for that reason. Turn the water off to any outside sources meaning faucets for hoses etc. keep me posted.

If we are going to be gone a couple days in the winter we sometime trickle our kitchen faucet into the sink. that should take care of the pipes. We have ours covered in the basement. good point BoB. I am going to read that post now.

I've never wrapped pipes nor turned off the water to the outside. Perhaps nothing has happened (knock on wood) because the pipes are in the basement and it is in use, so there is heat down there.
My brother is certainly relieved. Originally, the weather was to be "better" tomorrow, Wednesday. When I called my SO to ask about the roads, he said well, we are to have blizzard conditions today, and get down to -1 (F). Of course the "blizzard conditions" could just be that the winds are to get up to 40-50 mph, not that it will necessarily still be snowing.
So, I called the youngest sis (whose car Brother would be borrowing) and we agreed to just cancel Daddy's appointment. Especially since Mom had called and said if the roads were any bad, she'd rather we cancel. Don't know what Daddy thinks, he was awful anxious about getting this appointment. I told Brother it was rescheduled for January and when it got closer, we all could discuss who might be available to bring them up, depending on every one's work schedules. He worried about that, too. He mentioned work not being too heavy during the winter (he works for the county road department, and they don't seem to be out clearing roads like a lot of places do) and he might be able to get the day off. As long as I am able to be @ the appointment, to help get them in and out of the car, etc. Plus, the others really prefer oldest sis who is also a nurse or I to be available to attend all appointments to interpret what the docs say.
Perhaps Brother is trying to make up for the non-participation in the folks' affairs. If he had email, he'd be aware of much more---we do family emails all the time. Anyway, the brothers in law were the ones to move the folks' heavy furniture 2x. Brother did help some the 3rd time. My son and one of his buddies did the 4th move, again no help from Brother. He went to the house or apartment or wherever the folks were once a week to play Scrabble w/Mom. Now, that IS important, Mom looks forward to their games, and spending time w/him. But he is left scratching his head about the folks being in a nursing home--especially Mom. As sis pointed out, Daddy has NOT fallen since going in--and they admitted he fell maybe 2 or 3 times a day in the apartment. They are both eating 3 meals a day. We're only sure about one meal a day when they were on their own, and that was if whomever was taking the meal over was able to sit there long enough for Daddy to wake up and observe him eating. Otherwise, Mom would tend to forget, and tell Daddy they had already eaten. He'd think he just forgot, and even if he was hungry, figured he didn't need to eat again.
Anyway, altho they don't want to be there, and we'd rather they not be there, they are safe and eating and Daddy isn't falling.

We only turn the water off at the outdoor faucets. Most cold climate places don't have exposed pipes. We don't have any wrapped either but those who have them on outside walls and no furnace will need to.

When my wife and I had been married for about 4 years someone gave me a German Shepard. Not the short haired one the long haired one. Long and thick. She loved winter. We had her a nice dog house with balnkets and stuff and she would not use it. When it snowed or iced, you would find her sleeping in the middle of the yard in the snow or ice. She was as happy as a lark. Loved the snow.

Apparently he grabbed one up and threw him into a wall on the other side of the room leaving a massive dent, then he shot one in the back as he ran out of the house and the other one he shot in the street, multiple times. the one he threw was Renato Hughes, he got away somehow during the shooting of his two friends. very shocking when it happened....

Looks like the snow is going to wimp out in New England. They predict rain and light snow, less than an inch. I love the snow storms. It's so cozy with the fire going. I always liked snow, even when I had to go out in it every day. Before I got retired/retarded.:hat:
I love to let the weebs scoop it up with a plastic cup and put maple syrup on top! I'm sure the snow will plunder our domes very soon.

my mom sent this to me in my email the other day, thought i would share it with you all.
Sniff.. :rose:

Hubby let the dog out and we both thought the other had let him back in. Oh, the look he gave me after his 20 minutes of hell!
My dogs have snowsuits-haven't had to break them out yet, though.
I like to let them develop a bit of cold tolerance, but when the wind-chills get low, Timmy really shivers with his short Beagle coat.
Snowy has a thick, curly coat, so she does pretty well.

NOPE!!!
Bonnie Belle Watermelon Lip Smackers!!!
They stay softer and moisturize better in the ice-cold. Chap-stick is so waxy that it gets hard.

Heat tape keeps the pipes from bursting. Just wrap it around the pipes, plug it in the wall and you're set.
They sell it at hardware stores.

My little one, Shadow, has a down snowsuit complete with front legs and a hood. He's only 12 lbs and is very short. He has trouble going out in the snow. He's not crazy about the snowsuit but he will wear it. When the weather is just cold or the snow is hard enough he can walk on it, he wears the red turtleneck sweater I crocheted him. He looks quite dapper in in.
Gus, the Brittany spaniel with the degenerative condition, has to wear a sweater most of the time because his condition has caused him a lot of hair loss. Poor dog is almost bald.
Mac, the one in the photo, loves the cold weather and is happy frolicking in the snow.
I had an ice/snow storm last night and a lot of wind. No power at home. DH had an emergency vet situation and hurried out early this morning without starting the generator. I look really great in the office today.... I'm dressed, what more do they want? The roads are covered in tree branches and stuff that blew in from people's yards. At least I have power at work!

Our blizzard conditions never materialized--not that I am complaining, you understand. Already went into work once today, and it didn't take very long @ all.
I was called yesterday to see if I would work today. Someone had already arranged to work 7-11 am, so I agreed to 11am-7pm. @ 5, I was called, there were 33 week twins going be born. We would have to fly the babies out, as we are already @ capacity for the amount of staff we have. The OB didn't want to fly the mom out, for whatever reason. Now, I hadn't planned on getting up til about 9, so hadn't gone to bed very early. I told whoever called, I'd come in, but I didn't know if I could last 12 hours on this little sleep.
When I got in, the air flight crew was taking the mom out, to fly her before the babies were born (which is the smart thing to do, and so much easier on the mom, as she will be where the babies are.) They were also having a delivery, so everyone was tied up (this is night shift, with fewer folk to work on things) and no one had had time (or probably even tho't) about calling me to not come in. So, I told the unit clerk, I'm going home til 11. She nodded yes. After all, I was only coming in early for the twin delivery, and since that wasn't going to happen, they could function on the staff they had already arranged for.
I was back home, jammies on, and in bed before 7am!!! (And I didn't leave work til about 6:35.) DD had been called off last night, the guy told her the truck wasn't able to get in. Then, this am, her boss called to say, truck will be late, don't come in til 10:30. The boss had no idea someone had called the loaders off. I was going to drive her in, because now she would probably be getting off about the time I will. But, she just told me she tho't the roads looked like she can make it in her own car. So, I have about another 40 minutes to wake up and mess around before I leave!!!!

LOL-I agree Beem!!
Wanna have some REAL winter driving fun???
Throw a bunch of Texans to the skating rink!!! They look on the speed limits as a joke and a mere suggestion!!!
On a drive from Austin to San Antonio, my friend was clocking WELL OVER 80 for most of the trip while I was white-knuckling the dash-board and arm rest.
lol! you would drop dead on I-5. When we drive south on I-5 between the Bay Area and LA it is a total conspiracy: averaging 80+, everyone stays in the slow lane except to pass, cars switch off so no one is the "last" car (hence the one the cops would get) for too long, the truckers flash their light from the opposite direction to warn of CHP ahead...its a real team effort. The only thing that gums up the works is when there's a car that doesn't know the system and they screw it all up until they get passed.

When they rob a liquor store down here they take the money and the stoges! Anything that is expensive will engender crime. I mean, down here (and I bet up there), it might as well be legal it is so easy to get, but no one wants to pay the $60 or whatever the seasonal price is for an 1/8, so they are hanging around the distributors and robbing the "patients".

that is ridicullous. Happened to my neighbors. they moved into an apartment with a new baby also. (she is so cute) anyways they moved in on thurs and could not get the gas company till the following monday. it was a strange weekend in fall where at night it was down to freezing a couple of weeks before thanksgiving. that is so wrong. someone should come over right away especially when there are children there. Did you try calling their boss or the main company or is it a small city gas company?

apparently all of their drivers have scheduled calls to make all the way up to then, that is what we ended up having to do, just schedule an appt for someone to come out and fix it. the lady on the phone told me the only thing i could do was loosely insulate the regulator and keep relighting the bloody pilot lights. that is a real pain because the water heater is in a closet like compartment on the OUTSIDE of our house, so at night when we go to use the hot water and it isn't there, hubby has to go outside with a freakin flashlight and light the darn thing in the dark and the cold and sometimes the rain.
on a side note, i am making chicken and dumplings today...and i thought i would share the way i make them because i have heard that it is different from what people are used to.
boil a whole chicken (innards free of course :D) then shred the meat into little pieces when it is to the point of falling of the bones, THEN....
mix flour, salt, pepper, and water in a bowl to make a dough, roll it out flat and thin and slice out 1-2 inch wide "noodles" and place them in the pot with the chicken meat and broth, boil until the "noodles" are done to your liking. pretty vague i know, but i make it that way lol, just kinda throwing things in until it looks right.....
someone told me that those aren't dumplings, but that is what i was raised on as dumplings lol. i looked it up and they are like biscuits or something?....

That's what I have said. The cry was global cooling in, I think it was the 70's. From the talk it would seem we were going to have ice caps on the Great Plains. So, whatever was imposed or regulated to reverse global cooling (and I don't have a clue what that was) must have worked too well. IMO, we should all (or those who believe in global warming) take moderate steps to prevent further global warming instead of all these radical things that are going to drive prices of everything out of sight. We won't need to worry about global warming, cuz no one will be able to afford to run their cars, or even to warm their homes in the winter.

This doesn't even begin to reflect the lakeside areas and ski country in WNY.
I'm glad I laid in supplies yesterday.
Stay safe and warm Samantha.. RI folks think they know snow? Such wimps we are. It all sounds so beautiful though.. Send pics yes!

We always stay safe, Nawny...not worth it to screw around with our lives.
We're hardy WNYers.
When we go down by the lake, we stay in the little park where they recreate the crossing of Harriet Tubman to Ontario every year.
It's right near the Peace Bridge, into Fort Erie, so yeah-it's actually the Niagara River, which becomes the Horseshoe Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls, but it's in a little cove. You should see the ice-floes that gather there in the spring.

Well...NOT going to the river today.
Katey's feeling crappy and she's crashed out on the couch with both dogs and her Becky cat...all snuggled up warm and cozy (OMG!!! WarmnCozy!!! I miss you so much, my friend!!! Keep an eye on my baby girl from Heaven, Sis...) under the blanket.
I gave Katey her cough syrup and she barfed it up...along with her breakfast...
So here I sit talking and posting more news stories.

Ha! We now have an office cat. I went outside at lunch to talk on the cell phone and I felt something rubbing on my legs. Scared the crap out of me with all of the animals we have been catching. It was a cat. A gray, long haired cat. Friendlest thing I have seen in a while. The lady that works in the office took the cat inside and fed her. I went out to the field for two hours and when I got back the cat was asleep on the desk she uses. I sat down to check my emails and the thing jumped in my lap and laid down. Well, we now have a liter box and the cat has a box to sleep in. We will see in the morning.

Have to tell you this one.
When Katey was in the private high school she belonged to SerTeens-volunteer program.
At their annual dinner, who's sitting across from us but my ex-bf's ex wife and his daughter...
As Katey-a tiny size 5-is going back for seconds at the buffet just like everyone else, ex-bf's daughter gets up to join her.
Ex-wife grabs her by the arm and said to her "If you go back for seconds, you'll be out of SIZE 0 by the end of the school year."
I wanted to smack ex-wife and cry for the daughter.
How DARE she make her child feel GUILTY for going back for seconds!!
The kid only ate salad and fruit doing her first trip through!!!
Another F-ed up "Mom" perpetuating the "barbie doll" image to her kid!!!
And "Mom" was NO BARBIE...she was down-right matronly. Lotsa azz on that woman...makes Cindy look anorexic.

I DID say that daughter had only had salad and fruit and needed some protein.
Ex-wife said that along with protein comes FAT.
I said that a piece of chicken would probably be good.
Ex said it probably wasn't poached skinless...
At that point, it was either drop the subject or start something that may have embarrassed both Katey and her school mate...and get me arrested.
PLUS-MY MOM was sitting right next to me, digging her talons into my leg...NEVER a good thing.
How would ex-bf have handled that one?? Him being a COP, and all...
To this day, ex-wife and daughter don't know that I was seeing him for a year and a half. Katey didn't want her friend upset, which I understand. Ex-bf and I were over by then, and why let her know that her "daddy" was more of slvt that even she knew.
It might have been worth the arrest record to see the looks on ex-bf and ex-wife's faces when it all came out...

what a mess Sam. I was not serious......sara

Yeah-it would have been REAL UGLY if I had to defend myself-if she'd slapped me or something-and I had to go all cat-fight on her azz.
And it wouldn't have made Katey or her friend very popular in the preppy/yuppie private school, either.
Believe me-I DID want a piece of her...it just wasn't worth it, with the staff and the nuns there and all.

Sounds VERY FAMILIAR...one "mom" wants a size 0 daughter, and another insists that her daughter is a 10...they're BOTH sick.

Deacon-
Thank you and your co-workers for having the compassion to take the little kitty lady in!!!
I'm sure she'll give everyone lots of love in exchange for the lodging!!!
It is 4: something in the morning right now and it is 25 degrees outside. She is in the office with her food and water. We couldn't let her stay outside last night. Way too cold.

Oh Nawny I so wondered when you said that. not like the east coast to miss out on a major storm.........see how I feel about weatherpersons....???
looks like it would be a great area in the summer.
It's okay in the summer, but there are so many areas of the USA that are much prettier. I would love to see Lake Michigan in the summer.. I love the Internet because it can put you anywhere, and I saw your area..Ahhh, what a dream Sara!
I now use the weather site you were kind enough to send here. Its the best!

And, I feel the same way about weather people. lol!

LOL all models look that way. makes me not want to buy from the company. I mean put up some beautiful every day women like us!!!!!!!!
be real. Eat for goodness sake............:) sara
Honestly! The advertising world is not real. It's mostly airbrush and certainly the models weight does not reflect reality. The reason, IMO most of the women in the world have such a difficult time with accomplishing that look is, It isn't natural! What defines beauty is the healthy look of a face and body with some meat on it. For lord sake, if we saw an animal with no meat on it, we'd bring it in and feed it! My take on thin isn't meant to insult anyone who has a genetic disposition to be small boned and light weight. My children are small and light, but I expect them to gain as they grow older and I will pass that torch! LOL! I love to feed people and I love to see them enjoy food.
One of my sisters always was a little heavy. She was constantly on a diet. I watched her struggle, get addicted to diet pills, get depressed about it and I couldn't understand it. She is beautiful just the way she is.
My brother also felt awful because of his weight when he was younger. Kids at school made fun of him. One of the many times, I went to his defense when a gang of middle school kids were pushing him around and tore his jacket. I think that is where I learned how to fight. :punch: Every time I think of that day, my heart breaks. It's just wrong. :cuss:

Poppa is always trying to diet and failing. He's a big guy and I adore him. I understand why people want to lose weight (Guilty!) But for the love of Pete, who wants to look like a stick figure??? If my momma was alive and ever saw the models in the magazines today, she'd offer to take them to the hospital!!

That's tame.. lol. I have a DIL who would love that and actually look great in it! I love to live vicariously through her and shop in places like that for her. But at the same time, where does one wear such a dress? I mean it looks like something Celine Dion would wear on stage. Oh yeah, that's right, some people go out to fancy places.. :punch:

LOL even when I was a size 4 I could never fit into Bebe clothing. Overpriced/ho type clothing. I wouldn't have bought it even if I could fit into it. :seeya:
The funny thing is, while Christmas shopping for the nieces, I discovered that the identical things at Bebe could be found at Forever 21 for less than a quarter the price! And just as skanky, too: my hubby sent me back to make returns, lol! He's no fun. (And it was a teal velvet bolero jacket, and a plaid coat, for heaven's sake! It's not like I bought hooker clothes for the girls-but if he was horrified, his brother/their dad would be too...)

Kids are mean. Really.
With all the companies trying to sell online, I think one of them could really score by putting up a banner saying "all our models are size 8". That would give us out here some idea, whether thin or heavy, what the clothes look like with a woman inside them instead of some coat hangers...sales would go up, I'll bet. I know that adorable dress Sara likes wouldn't look the same off that size 0.

Hey those items sound adorable BoB! Yesterday I was listening to a talk show in my car while I was in the parking lot, waiting for the weebles to get out of school. The topic was, Muslim college students having to deal with American dress styles while remaining in good standing with their families. I was amazed at the way some of them were enjoying the peer influence, while others were horrified at the idea that they were expected to fit in and change their own dress preference.- Though I believe we as Americans are more open minded and acccepting than they realise- Most college aged people dont 'give a care about who dresses like what. IMO
Another problem was, some Muslim students were upset with the fact that males were allowed in the girls dorm to visit. Of course in her culture women were stand alone creatures and had no interaction with males, never mind, in the same corridor. One young woman who was interviewed was extremely upset about a male student who was standing in a huddle with 4 girls near the door of a ladies room she had come out of. She also mentioned that though she was on American soil, she'd be attacked by her family members who lived in the Middle East, if she dared to dress like an American!
Interesting.. hmmm.

The only clubs I go to are located in the heart of Little Italy and they let you taste the provolone before they cut it and weight it. If I ever walked into one of those young people clubs, I'd have a heart attack!

I was reading along, minding my own business, when there started to be comments alluding to my evening. When I clicked on the link that was referred to this is what I saw:
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You'll be asked to do things that are a little out of your usual realm — for instance, to get up on the dance floor or have a drink with someone.
Say yes. It's just a few minutes, not a lifetime commitment.
Honestly, that sounded like an average day for me - I'm an evolved Capricorn.
Then it dawned on me that maybe I should check the horoscope for the 10th:
A bit of pretending, role-play or vivid imagining broadens your perspective.
Now I get it!!!! LOL. Repeat my answer to today's horoscope. That will give you something to think about.

Interesting.. hmmm.
I saw an interesting example of cultures meeting yesterday. There was a girl in the full head scarf, very proper, but from the shoulders down she was in the tightest shirt and jeans imaginable. Left no part of her anatomy to the imagination-she was in great shape. I think it might not have met the "spirit" of the Koranic injunction, and she was talking to the girl next to her about how people stared at her because of the hijab. Ummm, I think that is not why they are staring.
