Working my rear end off. We have been having a safety audit by a team of 8 people from the customer's corporate safety department. I have only had one "finding" but is caused some problems. It was one of our subcontractors who were not wearing respirators where they should have been. I dislike that sub anyway because they don't give a flip about their employees. If it were up to me they wouldn't be on this job anymore. I stopped work as soon as I found out about it and told them not to come back until these guys were trained and fit tested so they could wear what they needed to wear. Dorks.
That was Monday. Since then the General Contractor has been under a microscope because of some of the things they have found. So far they have dropped a pair of pliers about 30 feet to another level, dropped three hammers multiple levels and today they dropped a piece of metal grating that weighed about 150 lbs about 90 feet bouncing off of structure several times. It landed about 50 feet laterally from where it started. My one finding doesn't look so bad now. There were more "white hats" (management) at the incident site than I have ever seen in one place. Some from the General Contractor and some from the customer. I bet they have one heck of a safety meeting in the morning. Glad my guys are not working in that area. Someone could have been killed easily with either the hammers or the grating. Scary, really scary. And "not so smart."
Don't you just hate when there is a finding and it was so avoidable? That used to send my old boss through the roof and to Mars. Not following the guidelines or rules is the most avoidable kind of violation.

But where will this money come from? Your pocket. Nothing is free, someone had to pay for it.
I paid for it out of my pocket working the last 43 years paying federal taxes.
Without it I would have lost my house of 20 yrs and friends and Neighbors of 20 years.............. Karma :D

They do get in the engines of cars when it's cold. Poppa had a squirrel war going on a few years back when they ate the wiring in the cabana we had on our last property. He was wild! He had to replace all of it and they also made nests in our umbrella's because we stored them in there. When I opened them in summer, they had holes in them and all kinds of stuff fell out. They are rotten little things. Glad they were comfortable, the little bushy tailed rats.
He said he was going to shoot them. My youngest went and bought him a plastic one and a stuffed animal one to make him feel guilty. He didn't.
She is an animal lover. All animals. lol!
This happened to my in-laws - squirrels ate the wiring in their brand new car and a camper truck/trailer. Thousands of dollars worth of damage. They were told to keep mothballs in the engine. Not sure I could stomach the smell but they said it took care of the problem.

'Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?'
'No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't.'
'Yet you still believe in him?'
'Yes'
'According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist... What do you say to that, son?'
'Nothing,' the student replies.. 'I only have my faith.'
'Yes, faith,' the professor repeats. 'And that is the problem science has with God.. There is no evidence, only faith.'
The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of His own. 'Professor, is there such thing as heat? '
' Yes.
'And is there such a thing as cold?'
'Yes, son, there's cold too.'
'No sir, there isn't.'
The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain. 'You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit d own to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.'
Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.
'What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?'
'Yes,' the professor replies without hesitation.. 'What is night if it isn't darkness?'
'You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?'
The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. 'So what point are you making, young man?'
'Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.'
The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. 'Flawed? Can you explain how?'
'You are working on the premise of duality,' the student explains.. 'You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought.' 'It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.' 'Now tell me, professor.. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?'
'If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do.'
'Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?'
The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed..
'Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?'
The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided. 'To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean.' The student looks around the room. 'Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?' The class breaks out into laughter. 'Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the professor's brain, touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir.' 'So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?'
Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable. Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. 'I Guess you'll have to take them on faith.'
'Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,' the student continues. 'Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?' Now uncertain, the professor responds, 'Of course, there is. We see it Everyday. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in The multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.'
To this the student replied, 'Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.'
The professor sat down.
PS: the student was Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein wrote a book titled God vs. Science in 1921...Awesome and thanks. I sent these in email to a few folks. :)

Yep. I just saw one and went ballitic. A stupid guy 8' in the air and not tied off. He had to go. Then I drive around the corner and a crane operator has a load off the ground and decides to go to the porta-jon. Urrrrrr.
I came out pretty good on their audit though. 4 days and only two findings. One was a guy with a hoop earing in. He knew better. That one was corrected on the spot. The other was the guy with the respirator and the GC KNOWS he doesn't need it. BTW, the lady that spotted the hoop earing had her's on too. THAT is the part that makes me mad. She is suppose to be a Safety Professional and has that in her ears? Dummy.

Thank you Deacon! I've seen that one but it was good to read it again. It helped me understand the story of Somer. I was so sad about it last night and I confess, I questioned God for a few seconds. :( And I also confess, I have a few more questions for Albert.
I love Albert Einstein.
We all question God sometimes. He doesn't mind as long as we accept his answer. She is with Him now. That is the fault of society, no God. I like what he said about memorizing things. "I never memorize anything that I can look up." BTW, I would have loved to have been in that classroom that day. God smiled.

I said "thank you for what?" They said they love having our front porch light on early in the morning so they could see to go to school! we do have very few street lights here and my dh turns it on every morning early before he goes to work. Now I will make sure it is on whether he goes in or not. At least until the time change and it will be light out. We all need more street lights. IMO :seeya:

What a nice story sara. Sometimes we do things for others and are not even aware. We had a street light out for months. We all took turns calling the city to get it repaired. One house was so vulnerable as it was so dark and it was adjacent to an alley type road which would afford a quick escape and 2 exits to choose from. It took months to get it repaired and that one light made such a difference. Good for you's :rose:

Problem is, I don't know how to determine exactly how many calories I can have per day. These websites that keep a count diary daily are not user friendly. According to me.

I can't tell which way my freakin' finger is moving, and the little arrow always goes past where I want it--that is, if I can get the little arrow anywhere NEAR where I want it!!!! Well, it is Friday. My last day at work this week. What a week. Our audit went well as far as my company and subcontractors goes. We had one finding and I am not so sure about that one. Oh, two but the second was a laborer wearing a hoop earing. The auditor had hers in too so I can't figure out why she wanted to talk about his. I really don't know whether that will be an official finding or not it was an isolated incident.
The other one was a guy mixing mortar and not wearing a respirator. I took the data sheet over to the meeting we had and showed them where it does not contain silica and is listed a nusance dust. It has a exposure limit of 5 mg per cubic meter. Same as the dust in the environment. We went ahead and had the company do the training and fit testing and the guy is wearing the respirator now so that one has been fixed.
The general contractor dropped that grating in the middle of the audit but I haven't heard anything else about that incident yet. That one is really bad, if I were the auditor, that could have killed someone. All in all it wasn't a bad week, just stressful. the district safety manager from the general contractor stopped and talked to me yesterday and he was happy. He isn't happy much so that was a good thing. My iron workers did a good job this week and so late yesterday I went around a thanked them for the job they are doing. Funny, that is more important to those guys than any "safety prize" that you give them.
We did have to let one guy go yesterday. Working at heights without fall protection. He was a HVAC guy. I didn't want to do it but I had to. If he doesn't think any more about himself than that he needs to get into different work. Falls are the leading cause of death in construction. If he wants to die he can go to another job and do it, not here. In the begining he thought it was funny that he got caught. Not so much now.
Off for the weekend. Going to see my baby. (better half)

I won't count the 5 cups of coffee, 3 glasses of Crystal lite. (So far)

Aren't the pasta portion sizes a total joke? I read my favorite pasta package, turns out my 2 servings is their 8, lol!
Guess where I've been for a couple of days? :D http://i11.tinypic.com/4mbo2mp.jpg

Awwwww, I love that place! They have pasta there! And cookies. :-) They might have cheese burgers too; On bread!
I almost had Oodles of Noodles a few minutes ago (I love those) but I opted for a 3rd tuna sandwich. Okay tell me now, why 8 glasses of water help us lose weight. I hate water. :cuss:

Oh, the water. What I have heard is a sufficient amount of water is necessary to metabolise the fat as it is being lost. Also, the body will react to lower calories as a starvation episode and hoard stuff including water, making it seem that weight is not being lost. But I also heard from a doctor that all liquids count in the count, even coffee. He said all liquids had the nutrients removed from them in the digestive process, and therefor it all turned into water. I liked that answer. I stay with it! Even if it is wrong, I don't want to know.

I think the dr is right. I can go a year without a glass of water and I'm not quite dead yet. ON the other hand, it could be the reason I'm gaining weight:shrug: No no , it's not, it's not! I almost never drank water when I was thin, so that theory just chit the bed. I've been doing 20 minutes to a half hour 3 times a week on the Gazelle. I expect some results from that too.
We need a lose weight blog here. I didn't feel comfortable on that site you sent. I was all over the place on it. I like the calorie counter. That calorie counting is the old fashioned way. These new fangled diets are awful. Atkins can actually be dangerous. It only works once. I lost 20 pounds on that one about 5 years ago. It's a vegetarians nightmare though. Mostly meats.
It didn't work this time. First thing that happens is bad breath, then constipation, then blowout carbs consumption. I'm a carb addict! The Big test happened Thursday when I picked up the weebs from school and they wanted potato chips. I bought them a big bag of Lays Suddenly my face got blue, then my hands shook, then my buttons popped and my eyes got large and I ate three. ;)

:seeya:
Okay BoB, I'm doing it. My oldest send me the calorie counter website. Ya got me doing math. Though I hate it, I am proud to say I now know how many calories are in a cup of pasta. 190/ Dreamfields. I also know there are 100 calories in a slice of fiber bread. Today I ate only 2 tuna sandwiches. A cup of tuna is over 200, so I'm going to sleep with only 800 calories in my body. I won't count the 5 cups of coffee, 3 glasses of Crystal lite. (So far)
Now I have only one question: Who the HELL eats a CUP of Pasta???? We'll find out tomorrow. It's Barilla Spaghetti day. On second thought, those people who cooked for Gator's family a few weeks ago at her nephew's wedding, hmmm.
So, are you saying that no one can eat a whole cup of pasta? Or, who stops @ one cup of pasta? lol
Remember, don't go too low on the cals. Puts your body in famine mode, and your body holds on to the fat, is scared no more food is coming its way.
spongebob kitchen sounds approbpriate for a rainy day. that is also what it has done here for 3 days. damp too. and cold.
we had fires in the fireplace all night. been hard to stay awake. imo sara
After 3 or 4 rainy (and cold) days, Friday was pretty nice, a tad bit on the windy side, and today was wonderful. Car thermometer said it was 55 out, the bank sign said 63. Pretty nice, no matter which it was.

Also, hopefully with the diet changes, there will be an increase in fiber. Water is needed to get the fiber pushed on thru. And, I think some people talk about the water flushing out toxins...I dunno, could be. A few years ago, the nurse practicioner was telling me not even tea, a very dilute iced tea, counted as water, only water does. Well, I mostly drink coffee and diet Dr Pepper--and lots of both. I drink water on the rare occasion I go into a restaurant!!
DD and I went to visit the folks today. Headed east 50 miles so she could get her El Charo fix. Then 70 miles to the folks'. Then the 70 miles back to our house. UGH.
Poor Momma. She is so forgetful now. Repeats the same story a gazillion times to the same person--in the same hour. We smile, laugh @ the appropriated times, and try to act like each time is the first time.
Took some Dillons fried chicken--sis says Daddy really likes it. Plus, it is something he can just get from the fridge--if Momma will let him. She says he doesn't eat much, and really, it's because she tells him they just ate--whether they did or didn't, mostly because she doesn't remember. The sisters who live there make sure they have one meal a day--what they don't eat of that, goes into the fridge so Daddy can raid it, if he can get by Momma. Sis says she will sit w/Mom, eat a roll or something, cuz Mom won't eat if Sis doesn't. Then, she sits there till Daddy gets up from one of his hundred naps a day, and eats w/him, so that he will eat.
They said for several days, he wouldn't get out of bed when they were there. One sis was even pulling on his arm, trying to get him up. The other sis says she called to see if the clinic had flu shots, and when they did, she told Daddy they were going to get them, and he popped right out of bed. Guess he's has the flu before, and prefers to try whatever is needed to prevent a repeat!!!!
Today, I went in and told him I had pumpkin pie and fried chicken. He looked @ the clock, it was after 2. I didn't know when they ate lunch (brother was there, so I know they did) so said, hey, it's time for a snack @ least, and we're eating that pumpkin pie. He didn't pop right out of bed, but he did get up, and actually stayed up for a while. I told him I was ready for a walk, he didn't know where we would go. When I told him, he is sure the people there are tired of him--right, it's been 2 weeks @ least since he walked there, it's Saturday and no one is there--it's @ the museum. So, I put on my coat. Told him, since he finally got his boots back, he had to put them to use and walk.
He didn't want his walker--okay, I'll take it in case. When we got there, he said, well HE could carry the walker, which he did for a few minutes. Then, he opened it up and used it. He acts like he's on a mission--walk and get it over with!!! I think he will do more for me (the sisters say, how come he will do what I ask, but refuse them?) because I just stand back and let him do for himself. Hopefully I can cushion a fall!!! He wants to load the walker, to close the door, to put on the seat belt. He doesn't want someone hanging over him. Okay, he almost fell once, running the damn walker over a man hole cover, but we both survived!!!! He wants to wear his boots altho the therapist said no? Well, he's freakin' almost 89 y/o, if he wants to wear the boots, let him!!!! At least he will get up and get around if we let him wear them!!!
The last couple of family gatherings, he has been shuffling around in slippers--no matter how many sizes we buy for him, he puts on the ones that are too big. Or, the water shoes he had--with laces tied around them to keep them on!! Breaks my heart. I did get him to buy some tennis shoes w/velcro straps, which he wore til he insisted he get his boots!!! When sis demanded the other sister give Daddy his boots (she and her daughter were wearing the 2 pairs he had) she said his eyes lit up, like he was greeting an old lost friend. We didn't think he had the strength to get them on, so tho't they would just be sitting like a trophy on his dresser. Well, guess he fooled us!!!

Your stories warm my heart Amy. It's so unreal when our parents get so old they need simple instructions. I remember my own mother's behavior when she went into full blown alzheimer's. I couldn't adjust to it no matter how much I read, no matter how much I knew about the condition. I was such a mess. You're doing so well with this. Bless your heart. I'm sure I'm going to blow my kid's minds when I go there. It must be a nice free feeling to let go of the things that weigh heavy on my heart now. Oddly, they are free from stress.
It's too bad but its true. Not only for himself, but the people around him who would try to rescue him in the process, the person he might land on below, or all the innocent bystanders who would have to witness his fall :(
Have fun!

Your dad sounds like my grandma. She didn't like to be fussed over by my mom, so she would always get out and about more with me. Her thing was money. She would give it away or buy little presents for people, even strangers. Honestly, she would spend all of it if she had it in her purse so my mom would hold it for her. But its what made her happy  so I made sure she had a little allowance to blow any way she wanted. If the boots make your dad happy, the therapist is nuts to say no. Good for you.

I will probably get several emails about my report this week. We did really well in the big audit but I did have to get on a few people so we did. I have no idea why these things always seem to pop up when a big audit is going on. I warned them that I have two personalities and they didn't want to see the other one. I guess they know what I mean now. I would much rather answer questions than to jump someone's butt but sometimes they give you no choice. It was a three page report and mine are normally only two at the most.

Yeah, the nasal one is live virus. Injections are dead virus. I did get the spray for my son. The children here are getting hit very hard so I couldn't risk waiting. But I and my daughter only qualify for the shots, so that's what I'm trying for tomorrow.
My mom is in the 60's group that seems to be at low risk too...she thinks she'll pass...

:) Good one B!
All of the art from the past depict women as rubenesque. Beautiful paintings of beautiful women do not show them as Hollywood stick figures. In fact men were not attracted to that type of figure. Skinny women were considered sick and their bodies not child bearing friendly. When my mother saw a skinny woman, she'd say, Oooo, what's wrong with her? My mother was 5 feet 11 inches tall and she was built thick in stature. She bore 9 children and she'd say, See? Because I eat, I don't believe in diets.
I'd say , that's not why ma.

If they want to commit suicide, fine. Just not on my work site. Falls are still the leading cause of death on construction sites. That is why it is not let go.
Think of the paperwork..... I hate filling out accident reports. The last one I filled out was for a visitor who had a heart attack in the office. I started to inappropriately laugh at some of the questions - could this situation have been prevented? Possibly, but not by anything I could have done. Lifestyle change perhaps for him? BTW - our office complex had no defibrillators and I was the only person who knew CPR. That's because I have worked part-time at a Y for 20 years and they require it of instructors. Anyway the office complex did get 1 defibrillator unit.

Good you know it shady-good for you. We all are trained at work and have a re-fresh course every 18 months. No re-cert dont bother showing up for your shift. We have 2 forms we have to fill out and one goes right to the Ministry. The agency one always comes back with something written finding yourself at fault. Sometimes justified but sometimes laughable.

What a gorgeous day here today. Fall is just spectacular! No jacket weather:)
Now I'm talking about the weather. Is that small talk? Have I run out of things to say? Never! The painters are here and the tile guy is still working on the new bathroom. This is the 3rd week. I'm ready to throw them all out because they keep walking through my dinning room. :cuss:
I have work to do upstairs. Does anyone see me up there working? I started some laundry though. I started it. I also have a cover letter to compose.. I don't see me doing that either. I wish the weebles were here today, I'm in the mood to color. :hat:
Alright, I'm going, I'm going!:chicken:

I would watch Red Skelton with my grandmother on this tv that had an 8 inch screen. I would run down the stairs in my footy pj's and watch with her because she gave me one of her two favorites - peach ice cream or cherry vanilla. :)

I do not like people who, like part of her family, think that God is santa. They think that prayer is about putting a shopping list in front of God and He plays Santa and makes all your wishes come true. That is not what prayer is about. Prayer is simply a conversation with God. You talk, He talks. That is if you will be still enough and listen. Too many people think that prayer is you telling God what you want with a short thank you note attached and miss the best part of prayer. The part where you listen. Do I hear voices in my head when I pray or an audible voice? No. But through the things I have read and studied, through the things around me and through that still small inaudible voice, yes God talks to me. It isn't a grand and glorious thing every time but sometimes it is. It isn't what some think is "life changing" every time but sometimes it is. Just like talking to a friend, I just feel better.
There are a lot of people who want to come off as being a follower of God who don't even recognize Him when he is walking down the street and they pass Him and the look in His eyes says He needs help. They don't recognize Him when He is the small child who needs to be helped or comforted. When He is the mother/father who needs finacial help taking care of His children and feeding them. When He is a close friend who needs comfort and help when they have a life changing problem. People who think of God as a great big Santa give Christians a bad name.
My two cents worth. Now I will be quiet about it.

My grandma had names for everyone because they were all busybodies. She would sit out by her bedroom window which was on the first floor and faced the street. She had a pillow there and a chair. There was the Mayor, the Governor, the putana, the sly fox, Stelladora. She named them all and talked about them all never thinking that they had anything to say about her. A couple of years ago I went up there, took a walk around the old neighborhood and I saw some old timers sitting out on the sidewalk. I stopped and said hello to a group of them near my grandmother's old house where I was born. They asked me who I was, (Of course) When I told them they remembered my grandmother. I looked it up Nawny cause I did not know. It is when two people sit on a front porch with their guitars talking about everyone in the neighborhood.
We used to do that all the time where I went to college. We had no guitars but a front screened in porch like I do today and we were very entertained.
It was a college community with lots of halfway houses spread around for the mentally ill since there was a state hospital nearby. I could tell you stories. LOL. sounds like a great way to spend my golden years. soon.

:) That sounds so wonderful. I missed out on college but I love the stories I hear from the gals who did go. It sounds like so much fun. Gosh I was changing diapers while my girlfriends were going to proms and homecoming parties. They kind of left me in the lurch, but for one friend, who has since passed away. She was so brilliant and taught me so much. I miss her terribly.
She had lots of stories to tell me and I helped her deal with her babies once she got married. She had some bad luck along the way and though she was quite an idealist, motherhood didn't suit her well. I used to tell her that motherhood isn't for everyone. We do what we come here to do, then we go home. :( She just went home a little too early. She was such a tortured soul. I know she is having fun in heaven. :rose:

LMAO!! Yayus! The boards have been a little slow this past week. We need more slime and smut on the ants and the scummings. Though the scummings board has had some recent stuff that makes the ants look less unique. Oddly it is that the ants are upper middle class and have no more class than the trailer residents in Satsuma aye?!

forgot to say, it looks like everything this person owns is in the stupid thing. The only place open is the driver's seat. The passenger's seat, back seat and rear is full of all sorts of junk. All the way up to the ceiling. I am beginning to wonder if it is someone on the run and hiding here. I think I will park in another part of the lot for a while.

Maybe you could express your concerns at the front desk? They usually ask for plate and vehicle info. Maybe they can at least keep an eye. Yeah for sure in the mean time-stay safe

I got spots! Honest! I just dusted poppa's end table with my sleeve. Those bad boys are generating more dust than a barrel of flour! They still didn't finish the bathroom and two more just started the bedroom. I asked them to take a bookcase upstairs today and they left white footprints on the carpeted stairs. Hey guys, remember that Bay Bridge emergency repair I was so exercised about over Labor Day? The one they had to close the bridge for and claimed had nothing to do with cutting the bridge in pieces to do a bypass? The one that could cause "catastrophic failure" if it failed? The one they repaired faster than expected?
The repaired piece broke off tonight, fell down onto the roadway, and took out 3 cars. The Bay Bridge is closed until further notice. http://www.ktvu.com/news/21444672/detail.html Another fun commute week in the Bay Area....

I was avoiding it, now I simply won't go on it. I could have been on it when this happened, I had to go to the airport tonight to pick up the DH, but I went the other way because the darn thing makes me nervous, then on the radio I heard about this...now I will just never get on it again until it is replaced. Last year in one of the new tunnels in Boston, a multi million dollar project once finished, was faulty. A young couple with a baby in the back seat drove though. How to Dance in the Rain
It was a busy morning, about 8:30 , when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived at the hospital to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.
The nurse took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?' He smiled As he patted my hand and said,
'She doesn't know me, But I still know who she is.'

Another thing that annoys me is Thanksgiving. I have people who come from Wednesday night until Sunday morning. I'll start getting ready right after Halloween. It's a lot of work having 6 extra people stay for that long and make Thanksgiving dinner for 20 people. Could the actual meal take longer than 15 minutes? Don't even get me started on the cleanup.

The whole thing is complicated! Step DIL, of the gang that stays for days and has 3 ill-behaved children, has an OCD. A towel of any kind cannot be touched more than once - EVER. A dishtowel used to touch-up dry the dishes from the dishwasher can only be used like this - 1 towel for glasses, another for silverware, another for dishes - you get the picture.
If you touch a bath towel it must be washed. So that means when one of the kids uses a bath sheet (by accident, of course) to dry their hands it must be washed. Every time a kid uses the bathroom and washes their hands it's another hand towel. 3 face clothes to wash 3 kids faces after breakfast.
She cannot use paper towels on her kids, ever.
The kicker is she says I have laundry issues because I don't want my off- white towels washed with blue jeans. She has no problems mixing laundry - I, on the other hand, believe in sorting. Some help I can do without!
It is the elephant in the room.

Can you buy some plastic baskets and label them? You have probably thought of that. Can she afford a hotel? with stuff for kids to do?

I left out some stuff I guess I need to fill in - she's not allowed to do laundry anymore because she broke my brand new front loader because she didn't want to wait for it to finish (the door locks and then unlocks when it's done). She pulled on the door so hard that it opened but then would not relock and therefore would not work. Laundry to the Laundromat over the holiday..... DH barely puts up with her and it's his son she is married to.
I would gladly pay for a hotel! If only they would go. They won't go because my 2 kids take care of their 3 little ones until my 2 figure out a way to disappear.
Wow shady thats alot to deal with. Especially at a busy holiday prep time. Yeah i think sara's idea is great-hotel-all the clean towels she wants-well as many as she can swipe off a housekkeping cart. Maybe the suggestion would have her not talking to ya at all tho. Well in the end ya know what they say-we cant pick our families but we sure can pick our friends :rose:
I am grateful for that! I leave early Friday morning with DD and 2 of my friends. We head to an outdoor market and shop. Then I take them all to breakfast and maybe shop some more. Anything not to go back to my own house.
Paper towels of all shapes and sizes. I'd hand her a basketful of those when she walks in the door and tell her the other stuff is off limits.
She won't allow paper towels to touch her children. Paper towels are only for cleaning objects, not drying hands, etc.

What are you doing in Boston? I think I asked before. Freedom trail?Fanueil Hall? The Harbor? HAH the harbor I sailed a 26' sloop in that harbor and almost got my cousin and I squished by a major boat. LOL
Gator are you packed? I am so glad it will not be freezing for you.
You both have to have a cocktail for beemer and I. Please do not forget. And pictures. lots of pictures. I am so jealous. Have a great time.
Gator will be unpacking :( Woke up at 4:45 with a scratchy throat and burning chest. By 8:00 I could barely talk. Was afraid it could be swine - it's not. Upper respiratory infection and bronchitis, have to take antibiotics. Did not want to risk making Nawny or any of the Weebles sick. Poppa would not like that. Had to cancel. So I'll be in bed for the next two days.
Brought back memories of being five years old. Got dressed as a gypsy for Halloween and had to sit by the window watching all the kids go trick or treating. I was sick and couldn't go.

OT for the OT: I got the swine flu shot on Monday. I know not everyone has the same symptoms, but I have noticed that my arm was very sore for 2 days (the nurse noted that people have been saying it hurts more than the flu shot), and I have been flat out exhausted and feeling "off" since several hours after I got it. It's starting to get better now, 2 days later, but just wanted to give anyone who hasn't gotten it a "review"...don't do it the day before your triathlon...:)

This was in my mail this morning. :) :rose:
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.
Awww...what a marriage they must have had!!!
Paper towels of all shapes and sizes. I'd hand her a basketful of those when she walks in the door and tell her the other stuff is off limits.
That's a good idea. Either she will use the paper towels, or perhaps decide that a hotel would be in their best interest. Nah, she'd probably go to the nearest department store and buy what she thinks she will need, and remember to bring her own the next time.
I have only papertowels in my kitchen. cloth towels are a breeding ground for bacteria.
Not the way Shady's DIL works them--one touch and that towel goes into the laundry, it seems. Gotta have a new one for the next touch. :D
Shady, if you have locked away your cloth towels, and all that is available are the paper ones, what choice will she have except to use them? "Dear DIL, THIS is they way we do things in MY house." Well, might possibly start WWIII, but it's worth a try, doncha think? :chicken:

I just got back from taking my son to the doctor. He had pneumonia two weeks ago, got antibiotics, felt better, went to work, then woke up this morning feeling terrible. Coughed and his "head almost flew off" His little guy (age 4) had a relapse from the kiddie flu he was treated for last week, so the whole family was in a panic. My DIL called crying this morning because both needed to go to the doctor in 2 different towns, so I took my son.
He didn't test positive for the Swine Flu, regular flu or strep but they are treating it like influenza and gave him tam a flu in pill form. Take it for 5 days.
The little guy was okay but he got tam a flu too because he has asthma. :(
Poppa has the anise and he boiled it in water, cooled it off and we have it here to drink instead of plain water in case we feel ill. It's the herbal tam a flu. I learned about it here. Thank you guys!
Poor Gator got a scare yesterday, thank God she didn't test positive for the piggy flu. It's best that she apply caution, going on a plane isn't too safe these days with all this sickness going round. I'm feeling great. Sickness is afraid of me. ;)

I sure wish we could get a new heater, I can't stand this old beast, but you know, too much money. Our whole house has only one wall heater. It's the way they did it in 1939, and the doors are arranged to kind of funnel the heat to where people are at any time, like baffles. It's actually pretty ingenious. I guess it is even "green" if you think about it! We sure consume less resources than our neighbors who've remodelled...we still have the old knob and copper wire wiring so we even use less power by necessity: too much plugged in, and I replacing fuses :)

wow just like us. Our furnace is the original from when I bought the house 20 years ago so who knows how old it is. It has been checked for carbon monoxide a few years ago and the service man said you need a new furnace. Like duh I can afford one??? It is like a monster. Every year when it goes on in November it bangs. like a mini t-rex walking. Dh cannot sleep and he gets up at 4:30 am to go to work. He says he is going to try and give it some oil. And we go through the fuses like crazy. I get used to the noise thank goodness but then I am not a worrier. sara

Right now, you could probably use the Throat Coat...but they also have a sampler box with a few of each of the cold care teas in it.
"Seasonal Herb
Tea Sampler
Seasonal Herb Tea Sampler includes 4 tea bags each of clinically tested Organic Throat Coat®, clinically tested Organic Echinacea Plus®, clinically tested Breathe Easy® and Gypsy Cold Care®."
They even have syrups and pastilles (cough drops), and they're all herbal.
Hope this helps, and hope you're feeling back to normal soon!!
I'm also sorry to hear that you've had to miss your trip!!! That TRULY SUX!!!
Hugs-

It seems like my whole world is terrified of this Swine Flu! I'm still calm, call me crazy but; this is just a new strain of a flu - which is basically all that H1N1 is: a new strain of flu which the fear mongers on "FOX-NOISE" and the entire medical media like to call "Swine Flu" because it conjures up the thought of pigs and puts the fear of be-Jaysus in people and gets em to take the flu-shot, which is packed full and busting with all kinds of crap - including Mercury and Formalde-bloody-hyde, and which'll kill ya far more efficiently than the flu will.
The thing is, if you've had the flu' before then your body has the military muscle to deal with H1N1, but the feckin drug companies want you to try their new cocktail, which includes Squalene ( Google it and grit yer teeth) and lots of other goodies.
I'd rather have my sinuses scraped by a trained baboon than let those vampires anywhere near me with a needle.

I fear swine flu more for the youngers-including my children. I will be getting the vaccine due to the field i work in. Toronto just had a death of a 13 year old boy who had no known underlying complicating disease. In fact he was at a hockey tourney when he fell ill. Parents took him to be checked out due to fear of swine. He was dead in 48 hrs from onset. This is the 2nd Ontario death from swine with no compromised health. All others had a health issues. Autopsy to be done to see if there was something but just not known. I keep it in perspective and they will get their shots being students and my daughter a nurse. Boys tell me lots of precautionary things in place. Wipes and gels available everwhere at school and buddy systems set up between the students,school,R.A.'s roommates etc. to monitor and check in on kids who do become ill. So we hope for the best. If U.S. son gets ill i will be on the first plane out to stay nearby just to monitor. Canadian son we will pick up and bring home. They are rarely sick and i know they wouldn't tend to a high fever etc. as they should. So with a plan of action i feel better.

Feeling just awful..can't breathe, sore throat. Bronchitis seems better though. Burning is gone. Oh, why do we have to get sick?
Gator I feel for ya. I've had bronchitis lots and it makes ya so sick. Biaxin is always the wonder drug for me my Doc would prescribe. Within an hr. of 1st dose my chest is breaking up and as gross as it is up it comes-gotta go somewhere right. Sick feeling gone in 2-3 days. Best part-only 1 pill a day. I hope you have something that is working for ya. Getting sick sucks for sure and you and nawny had to cancel. I guess on the flip side it's good ya didn't get there and get sick. I hope you guys can re-schedule soon. Ya must miss the sight of snow right???? Feel better soon :rose: Oh and yes lots and lots of tea. I luv Roobois-african tea and medicinal. It has to be Tetley tho other brands taste terrible.

Your welcome. Opened up a whole new world for you!
Well today was the last day of our Indian Summer. tomorrow starts the rain and cold weather. it always has to be like that on Halloween and I do not know why. I do know we have tons of candy and I have no idea how I am keeping from it..........maybe later tonight........!;);)
I have never lived in a place that had trick or treaters. Country roads, no sidewalks, everyone goes to a town to t or t. That does not stop me from buying candy every year just in case someone shows up! I don't even have kids at home this year to eat what I buy.
Feeling just awful..can't breathe, sore throat. Bronchitis seems better though. Burning is gone. Oh, why do we have to get sick?
I hope you feel better - soon!!!
Beemer - I know, it's the healthy teens dying that is driving me nuts. NJ had another 17 yo boy die from swine. Perfectly healthy kid dead in 24 hours. For most people it's just a normal flu but when it's not, watch out.

I think the reason its getting so much excitement is because it is killing children and teenagers. Almost every day we are hearing of another child dying here in the Bay Area, and not ones with "pre-existing conditions". Normal flu tends to go for the elderly, but this one is the opposite.

For sure-I wish we knew why the seemingly healthy ones are dying. Yes we can understand why the elderly die from it. I had a flu a coupla years ago that was the worst i have ever had. I remember laying there thinking ok know i get why this kills elderly people. One thing i started doing last year which may have helped since any illness i did have was quite mild was after washing and drying my hands i use the paper towel to open the door no matter where i was. If it was a public bathroom and i couldn't toss the towel into the basket-oh well it just hit the floor close to it. I have noticed alot of restrooms now that have a door knob and not a push door have moved their baskets close to the door. At work after using the puter for reports i make sure i dont touch my face at all and when done immediately wash my hands. Prolly things I/we shoulda been doing for years. Anytime i fly-this i have done for years simply cuz planes are so dirty i carry those lysol wipes for the tray and chair arms and my hands. Oh and my big OCD is motel rooms. I wipe everything down with the wipes-especially the phone and tv remote. I doubt the maids are cleaning remotes that lay on beds EEEWWW

Here's a pathology report on why its so deadly: http://afludiary.blogspot.com/2009/09/pathology-of-fatal-h1n1-lung-infections.html
My thing right now is the language lab at the community college I'm learning Italian at. They have headphones and microphones on the computers for doing the exercises. It is required time, not voluntary. But they have those fuzzy covers for the microphones and they are NOT disposable. Nor are they cleaned before each new person gets on the computer. EWWWWWW! I got in a brewhaha with the lab over this. Now I just sit there, pretending to be doing other exercises that do not require the headphones so I can put in my time without touching those disease-sponges. And they wonder why only 25% of the students in the language classes are showing up to class right now! Only 11 of 42 were in Italian on Wednesday.
I do think my whole family had the piggy flu in April, or I'd be sick by now, but it was never officially tested, so I have to act like we did not. Besides, who wants a cold, even?

Okay, everyone who's dressing up: what are you going to be?
I will be a pirate. My son is a Darth Vader, and my daughter is a Juarista (she was supposed to be Frida Kahlo, but turns out my hubby despises Frida, says she creeps him out. I say, what better for Halloween? But veto power...so I took the monkey off her shoulder and gave her a toy rifle. Voila!) My hubby will only go so far as to wear his flame bowling shirt.

Yeah, I love decorating. I took advantage of the fact that hubby won't do the yardwork to install a cemetery in the front (like, yeah, we meant to do that, lol!) My favorite headstone is "Ima Dedwan" . There's a bloody arm reaching out of her grave. After I put that up, the neighbors on both sides went to work on theirs, so I kind of led a movement, lol!
