A retired Marlboro High School shop teacher pleaded guilty to a felony child pornography possession charge in Ulster County Court Tuesday before County Judge J. Michael Bruhn.
Ulster County Assistant District Attorney Bill Weishaupt said the District Attorney’s Office is recommending Mark Bevilacqua, 58, of Marlboro, be sentenced to five years probation and be registered as a sex offender for his admission to possession of a sexual performance by a child, as he has no prior criminal history.
Bevilacqua’s March 19 arrest followed a joint investigation by Marlborough town police and state police at Highland that began in the fall of 2006 when the former teacher brought his computer to a repair shop after it “broke down,” said Weishaupt.
An off-duty police officer who worked at the shop stumbled upon “a collection of obscene photographs of minors — mostly females” while looking for the problem with the computer and reported it to Marlborough town police, Weishaupt said.
The investigation eventually led police to execute a search warrant at Bevilacqua’s home and seize the computer.
